Consultation Draws Christian Publishers from across Latin America

(Carol Stream, Illinois, USA)- More than 45  publishing staff from across Latin America attended the June 6 to 11 LetraVIVA—MAI Consultation on Christian Publishing held in Oaxtepec, Mexico. “There was a strong sense of growing and learning together, and forming plans for joint projects, promotion of books and the development of new resources,” said Ian Darke, long-time coordinator of LetraViva.

The LetraVIVA publishers network and Media Associates International developed a full training program of plenary sessions and small-group workshops, including:  Mexican professor and pastor Joel Sierra, trends in Latin American church and society; author Keila Ochoa Harris of Mexico, team writing;  Silvia Justino of Editora Mundo Cristão in Brazil (pictured right), editorial strategy; David Renard of New York, co-founder of the Loadown, digital marketing; and MAI’s Director of Publisher Development Ramon Rocha III, steps to financially self-sustaining publishing.

“Many participants expressed particular interest in marketing, publishing finance and the development of Latin American authors,” MAI President John Maust said.

During the conference LetraViva celebrated its 20th anniversary as a publishers’ network. The group has more than 40 full and associate member publishers.

The LetraVIVA-Latin Link 2016 Book of the Year was awarded to publisher Ediciones Certeza Argentina for its title, Mujeres Jefas de Familia (women who head the family). Author Samuel Tapia offers biblical perspective on the one-parent family. The prize honors the best Christian book by a Latin author residing in Latin America.

MAI continues to offer strategic training for Christian publishers and writers in Latin America. Since 1985, MAI has equipped men and women in 79 countries.
