December 4, 2020, WHEATON, Ill.— Crossway is excited to announce that four books—The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self; Gentle and Lowly; Lead; and Arlo and the Great Big Cover-Up—have been named winners in their respective categories for the Gospel Coalition’s 2020 Book Awards.
The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution (Crossway, November 2020) by Carl R. Trueman was awarded in the Public Theology & Current Events category. In this timely book, Trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom—rather than the cause—of the human search for identity. TGC writes, “Any Christian who wants to understand the social, cultural, and political convulsions that the West in general, and the United States in particular, are now experiencing should read this book.”
Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (Crossway, April 2020) by Dane Ortlund was the winner in the Popular Theology category. Ortlund dives into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encourages readers with the affections of Christ for his people. “Over the course of 23 short chapters, Ortlund models patient biblical reflection and channels the best Puritan thought in this searching and multifaceted study of Jesus’s heart,” observes TGC.
Paul David Tripp was recognized in the Ministry category for his book Lead: 12 Gospel Principles for Leadership in the Church (Crossway, September 2020). Tripp draws on his decades of ministry experience to give churches principles that will enable new and experienced leaders alike to focus their attention on the ultimate leadership model: the gospel. TGC says, “Here is a vital survival guide for any pastor in any church.”
Arlo and the Great Big Cover-Up (Crossway, June 2020) by Betsy Childs Howard, illustrated by Samara Hardy, was awarded in the Children’s category. With easy-to-understand language and engaging illustrations, children will learn important lessons with Arlo about repentance and the forgiveness found only in Jesus. TGC comments, “The book’s illustrations are simple, bright, and engaging even as we’re reminded about the forgiveness found in Christ.”
Justin Taylor, Crossway’s executive vice president of book publishing and book publisher, says “The TGC Book Awards are especially meaningful to Crossway given our deep admiration for TGC’s gospel-centered fidelity and discernment. We are truly honored—and give thanks to God—for the four awards and the two honorable mentions.”
Titles that received honorable mentions include An Introduction to John Owen (Crossway, July 2020) by Crawford Gribben in the History & Biography category and Family Discipleship (Crossway, August 2020) by Matt Chandler and Adam Griffin for the Christian Living category.
