Also Now Available in Personal Size and Large Print in the NIV
Grand Rapids, Mich., Aug. 22, 2017 — Because context changes everything, and because historical parables and stories can come to life with just a bit of insight, Zondervan is pleased to announce that the award-winning Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible was released in the New King James Version™ on August 22, 2017.
When it was released in the New International Version in August 2016, the Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible: Bringing to Life the Ancient World developed a new scriptural experience for Bible readers everywhere with the idea that clarity could be given to even the most well-known Bible stories.
The general editors of the Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, John H. Walton and Craig. S. Keener, are experts in the field of ancient cultural origin, which allows them to create rich and engaging commentary for Bible readers to dive deeper into their study of the days before, during, and after Christ.
This Bible’s unique offerings have been noticed and praised by industry organizations like American Book Fest, which awarded the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible the International Book Award and recognized it as Award-Winner in the “Religion: Christianity” category. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible also received a 2017 Christian Book Award for Bible of the Year from the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association (ECPA).
“Since the majority of Bible readers shop with translation as their first priority, it is imperative that we introduce long-time NKJV Bible readers to this insightful, engaging commentary,” says Melinda Bouma, associate publisher, Zondervan Bibles. “I trust NKJV readers will love and appreciate this study Bible every bit as much as NIV readers.”
Additionally, due to consumer requests, the Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible is also available in new Large Print and Personal Size formats in the NIV translation.

Religious Liberty to be featured topic at Crisis Publishing Initiative
(Colorado Springs, CO) – Persecution throughout the world is escalating, millions of Christians live with gross insecurity, and the concept of religious freedom as a universal human right is being challenged. The Christian persecution crisis is among the key topics at the Crisis Publishing Initiative Oct. 15 – 18, 2017, in Sopron, Hungary.
In a plenary session, a workshop, and two case studies the crisis will be examined from all sides by a religious liberties analyst and Christian publishers experiencing persecution.
The Crisis Publishing Initiative is for Christians in publishing on the front lines, as they seek to find the truth in chaotic situations and publish the information their readers need in order to respond to crises as those called to be light and salt in a fractured world.
Elizabeth Kendal, an international religious liberty analyst and advocate, will present a plenary session discussing the challenges of reporting on religious persecution with the discernment, wisdom, understanding, and courage required of writers and publishers seeking to be a voice for the suffering Church.
Kendal is an adjunct research fellow in the Arthur Jeffery Centre for the Study of Islam at the Melbourne School of Theology, and the director of advocacy at Canberra-based Christian Faith and Freedom.
Since 1999, Kendal has published a weekly Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin to help facilitate strategic intercessory prayer. She is the author of two books: Turn Back the Battle: Isaiah Speaks to Christians Today, which offers a Biblical response to persecution and existential threat; and, After Saturday Comes Sunday: Understanding the Christian Crisis in the Middle East.
Kendal will also present a workshop on “Global Trends in Religious Liberty.” She will discuss how global trends have converged to create the “perfect storm” that forms the context for today’s escalating persecution.
In addition, case studies will be given by two publishers whose readers face persecution.
Gökhan Talas, co-founder and publisher of Miras Publishing Ministries in Turkey will present on publishing a Christian magazine in a Muslim-majority country.
Talas is a professional graphic designer, writer and publisher. He and his wife, Ozge Talas, founded Miras Publishing Ministries in 2011, and began publishing Miras Magazine, the only Turkish Christian magazine, in 2012.
Previously, he worked at Radio Shema, Ankara’s only Christian radio station, where he prepared programs with the intent to spread the gospel. Later he moved to Malatya where five Muslim terrorists entered his church’s office and killed three of his friends, including the pastor.
“Publishing in the midst of communal fanaticism, Hindu nationalism, and Christian persecution,” will be presented by Joseph Benjamin, editor and publisher of Gujarati Christians magazine in India.
Benjamin publishes both the website and magazine versions of Gujarati Christians, and founded multiple adult literacy and vocational training centers for poor, rural women.
Benjamin launched the website in 2000 in response to persecution, famine, and floods in the area. Although created for Christians, many non-Christians also use the site. It provides evangelism content in the form of articles, prayers, and tracts. The high demand for additional content from the website led Benjamin and his wife to create a corresponding magazine Gujarati Christians in 2007.
Other topics to be discussed include how to cover the refugee and migrant crises, natural disasters, and war zones, as well as tools for reporters and editors, tips on how to stay safe, photograph crises, and deal with secondary trauma.
New one-day workshops on writing for publications and photography are now available for Crisis Publishing Initiative participants on Oct. 19, the day after the conference.

Tyndale Kids title ‘Love, Lexi’ by Sherry Kyle wins Cascade Award for Young Adult/Middle Grade Fiction
Carol Steam, Ill. (August 24, 2017) — Tyndale House Publishers is pleased to announce that Love, Lexi: Letters to God, by Sherry Kyle recently received the Cascade Award for Young Adult/Middle Grade Fiction Book at the Oregon Christian Writers Conference. According to the Oregon Christian Writers’ website, the purpose of the Cascade Writing Contest is to “reward excellent writing and to encourage both seasoned and emerging writers.”
Titles submitted for consideration are judged in ten categories, including story elements such as opening hooks and believable and relatable characters, fresh and original writing that demonstrates the author’s voice, and well-developed and differentiated characters. Importantly, books are also judged upon the inclusion of a spiritual thread that is natural to the story and appropriate for the Christian market.
Kyle’s Love, Lexi follows seventh grader Alexis Dawn Cooper (Lexi) as she navigates both middle school and being a middle child. But, given the format of this book, it is no ordinary middle-school novel. Love, Lexi is a unique combination of a fictional story combined with a devotional and journal, allowing readers to watch Lexi learn to seek God first, above all else, while writing their own letters to God. Love, Lexi draws young people into Lexi’s life as they contemplate their own place in God’s eyes.
Linda Howard, associate publisher of children and youth products at Tyndale House Publishers, says, “Congratulations to Sherry! Love, Lexi is the perfect combination of fiction, devotions, and journaling for tween girls, and we are honored to have partnered with her to publish it.” To learn more about any of Tyndale’s titles, visit www.tyndale.com.

Paraclete returns to Fiction with a debut novel to confuse the traditional shelving categories
August 25, 2017 — With the publication of Can You See Anything Now? by Katherine James (October 10, 2017 / ISBN 978-1612619316 / Trade Paperback) Paraclete Press returns to publishing novels and launches a new series, Paraclete Fiction. “Our intention is to reach the unchurched, de-churched, and ‘nones,’” explains Publisher Jon M. Sweeney, “who would probably never look for something new to read in the ‘Christian Fiction’ section.”
For a faith-based press with traditional leanings, the Paraclete Fiction line represents not just a new direction, but a risk. “Can You See Anything Now? is a novel about real people living real lives,” Sweeney explains, by which he means that expletives and themes of addiction and self-injury in the book may be unsettling to some, while appealing to others.
Can You See Anything Now? explores grace in the midst of tragedy, and in the lives of unforgettable, utterly ruined characters. The novel follows a year in the small town of Trinity, and the lives of the suicidal painter, Margie, who has been teaching her evangelical neighbor, Etta, how to paint nudes; her husband, the town therapist who suspects his work helps no one; and their college-aged daughter, Noel, whose roommate, Pixie, joins them at home for a winter holiday, only to fall into Trinity’s freezing river.
Themes of small-town life and the juxtaposition of tragedy and redemption should resonate with readers of Marilynne Robinson, Richard Russo, and Elizabeth Strout. Early endorsers include Leslie Leyland Fields, Suzanne Wolfe, and Scott Cairns.
About the Author: Katherine James has an MFA in fiction from Columbia University in New York City, where she received the Felipe P. De Alba Fellowship. She has been on staff with CRU, a ministry to college students, for over twenty-five years. She is a member of Redbud Writers Guild, and is senior editor for CruPress. Her memoir, Notes on Orion, about the opioid epidemic in the suburbs of Philadelphia and the ways that it affected her family, will be published by Paraclete in the second half of 2018.
“Katherine James just might be a genius. If you’re a redemption chaser, you’ll love this book. If you hate redemption stories, you’re going to love this book.” —Leslie Leyland Fields
