English bestseller, When Helping Hurts, released in Spanish: Cuando ayudar hace daño

February 27, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

Nashville, Tennessee (February 2017) — B&H Español, the Spanish imprint of B&H Publishing Group, is proud to announce the release of Cuando ayudar hace daño, the Spanish edition of the bestselling book When Helping Hurts by Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert (Moody Publishers, June 2009).

With over 400,000 copies sold, When Helping Hurts is a paradigm-changing contemporary classic on the subject of poverty alleviation and ministry to those in need. Co-authors Corbett and Fikkert bring readers to understand that poverty is much more than simply a lack of financial or material resources, and that it takes much more than donations and handouts to heal the brokenness that leads to poverty. Part of Christ’s mission on earth was to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captives—and local churches have the privilege of continuing that mission.

B&H Español is partnering with the Chalmers Center to release Cuando ayudar hace daño: Cómo aliviar la pobreza, sin lastimar a los pobres ni a uno mismo (February 1, 2017). The Chalmers Center, founded by Fikkert in 1999, is an organization that equips churches to walk alongside people who are poor, breaking the spiritual, social, and material bonds of poverty. Cuando ayudar hace daño has been especially adapted for the Spanish market and includes a new introduction by international evangelist Luis Palau.

“My hope is that the key principles [in When Helping Hurts] will prove to be valuable for the powerhouse that is the Hispanic church as it continues to minister the fullness of the gospel,” Corbett said.

Fikkert added, “By God’s grace, When Helping Hurts has reached more churches than I ever imagined possible. I am excited to share the same principles of effective poverty alleviation with Hispanic churches around the world.”

B&H is supporting the release of Cuando ayudar hace daño with influencer outreach, international marketing, and a publicity campaign to key media outlets. For more information, visit www.bhespañol.com.

“B&H Español is pleased to partner with the Chalmers Center to make Cuando ayudar hace daño available to Spanish speakers in the U.S. and abroad,” said Cristopher Garrido, Publisher for B&H Español. “When Helping Hurts has had a huge impact on the way English-speaking Christians think about issues of poverty alleviation, charity, and justice. We pray thatCuando ayudar hace daño can serve and challenge Spanish-speaking Christians in the same way.”

Steve Corbett is an Assistant Professor of Community Development at Covenant College and serves as a Community Development Specialist for the Chalmers Center. Mr. Corbett has a B.A. from Covenant College and a M.Ed. in Adult Education from the University of Georgia.

“Frank Discussion” Highlights Tyndale House Publishers’ Under Our Skin Forum

February 27, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

High-profile panelists discuss intersection of race and faith at The Crossing Church in Tampa and national Livestream

CAROL STREAM, ILL. (February 21, 2017) – In what Christian Post reporter Samuel Smith described as a “frank discussion (about) how Christians can bridge the racial divide in their communities,” Tyndale House Publishers (@tyndalehouse) brought together a number of prominent sports figures, authors, and pastors to The Crossing Church in Tampa on February 16 for Under Our Skin: A Forum on Race and Faith. The replay of the Livestream for groups and individuals is now available at Tyndale.cleeng.com.

An event attendee wrote, “This helped me to think about my views on race. My son has a white girlfriend. She would not have been my choice for him, only because of her race. Most of my nephews also either date or have dated outside of their race. Growing up I internalized “if she can’t use my comb, don’t bring her home.” I know that my children’s generation were not raised with racial views that I was raised with. I truly believe that my parents raised my siblings and me with their racial views from a place of love and protection because of their experiences. This forum caused me to revisit my views inside and outside my race.”

A follow-up to Benjamin Watson’s Tyndale book Under Our Skin, which examined the role of faith in healing the racial divide, the forum continued the conversation with thought leaders from various walks of life, but especially from the world of sports. In addition to Watson, panelists included Tyndale author and Hall of Fame football coach Tony Dungy, former NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award winner Warrick Dunn, Heisman Trophy winner and executive director of Desire Street Ministries Danny Wuerffel, author and speaker Mo Isom, Detroit pastor and author J. Kevin Butcher, University of South Florida head coach Charlie Strong, CBS broadcaster James Brown and executive director of Restoration Academy Ben Sciacca. ESPN’s Sage Steele served as moderator.

Wrote Watson on his Facebook account after the event, “So grateful for the wisdom, discernment, passion and conviction displayed by the people in this group at Under Our Skin Forum Thursday night. I know their labor was not in vain, as hearts were changed and feet were spurred into action across our country as we continue to heal the divisions among us. Honored to have been a part of this special event and looking forward to our paths crossing again! There is no wound that God cannot heal.

Sales were brisk at the book table—the number of books sold represented nearly 30% of the total attendance—and participants stood in line late into the evening to get their books signed.

Feedback after the event was overwhelmingly positive. A sampling of comments:

Best decision of the day was taking in the Under Our Skin Forum via video.
– Michael (Iowa)

I woke up this morning feeling hope and inspiration. Thank you again, Under Our Skin Forum. I think everyone in the US needs to hear what I did last night.
 – Kim (Tampa)

You could not have done this any better. What a world-class event. World class. Truly something inspiring that will spread far and wide. We loved every minute. – Missy (San Diego)

Approximately 500 people attended the event and more than 30 groups from 15 different states participated via live streaming. In addition, CBN’s “700 Club” sent a crew to cover the event, Tampa-area’s Salem affiliate hosted a live remote, and the Tampa Times, among other media outlets, reported from the forum, which included a VIP dinner prior to the event.

The event web site is www.underourskinforum.com.

Bible Bicentenary: Bible Society Australia Celebrates 200 Years

February 27, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

Oldest continually operating organization in Australian history

Australia’s longest living organisation may not be who you think it is.

It’s not Houghton Wines or Westpac or the Australian Agricultural Company and it’s certainly not McDonalds.

There wasn’t a Big Mac in sight when community leaders Governor and Lady Macquarie created Bible Society in 1817.

Ahead of its Bicentenary on 7th March 2017, Bible Society remains the oldest continually operating organisation in Australia’s history.

The only change is the name.  In 2010, the Bible Societies in each state merged into a single organisation, Bible Society Australia.

It’s still involved in the translation, publishing, and distribution of the Bible. BSA also aims to engage people with what it calls the Good Book, using both traditional and the latest media.

Bible Society Australia CEO Greg Clarke says “we’re not content simply to hand our Bibles. We want to help people engage with the Bible and answer their questions about it”.

“We’re celebrating our 200 years of sharing the Bible by doing more of what supporters want us to do – championing the Bible worldwide, from prisons in Australia to churches in China.”

In our increasingly secular society, the Bible remains the world’s best-selling book with more than five billion copies printed.

But is it still relevant to Australians?

Bible Society claims the good book is foundational to our human rights and legal system.

According to Human Rights barrister Geoffrey Robertson QC, the philosophic basis of the right to human dignity is the parable of the good Samaritan.

Our charities also reflect the well-known parable. Of the 30 largest charities in Australia, 26 are faith-based. They argue that Bible readers are more likely to volunteer to help others.

The values that Australians cherish also stem from the Bible.

A common ANZAC statement is from John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this – to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Bible Society claims it’s a verse that captures our national vision for humility, sacrifice and friendship between equals.

Following Arthur Stace’s one word campaign “eternity” is a Bible word most Australians would recognise. Christians believe it’s the message of God’s love for us in Jesus Christ and a love that will last forever.

Eternity is also the title of Bible Society’s news service which reaches hundreds of thousands of people via newspaper and digitally.

To mark its 200th birthday, Bible Society Australia is staging a national celebration service on Sunday 5th March, 2017.  Bible Society Australia wants this celebration to be more about elevating the place of the Bible rather than about Bible Society itself.

The event will be held at the Hillsong Main Auditorium in Sydney. Church groups of every denomination are encouraged to stream the event as a lighthouse church. Details at www.bible.org.au.

Dr. Clarke says “Over the past 200 years, the Bible has done Australia a lot of good”.  He says the work will continue both here and throughout the world, adding “the Good Book really is here for good”.

A key feature of the Bicentenary celebrations is the launch of a unique Indigenous art book titled “Our Mob, God’s Story”.

A powerful collection of 115 paintings by Australia’s Indigenous peoples, that tell Bible stories in their unique visual languages celebrates 200 years of Bible Society Australia (BSA). “It is really good because it engages people, unsaved people, and christians who are going through struggles in life and builds them up”, says Max Conlon, one of the 67 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders who contributed to the book. “Our Mob, God’s Story” took over five years to compile, with paintings located from across the Australia, many from extremely remote locations. The book was funded by a generous donor, which means that proceeds from sales will in turn fund future Bible translations in Australian Indigenous languages.

The cover of “The Bible Down Under” a short 100-page history of the impact of the Bible on Australian culture, features an artwork by a controversial Australian artist , Reg Mombassa – who painted an “Australian Jesus” series for the artist’s collective Mambo. The Author, historian Meredith lake explains how the Bible had an impact on the most unpromising of societies, a colonial settlement founded as a prison. She will produce a larger version of this work later in 2017 called “The Bible In Australia”.

A special edition of the NIV Bible commemorates the Bible Society itself, the oldest living organisation in Australia. It contains a  short history of BSA, which highlights the translators of the Bible into the local indigenous languages, and the shift from a place with a drastic Bible shortage to a nation where the Bible is freely available.

Perhaps the best way to celebrate 200 years of Bible work is to give it away. A special giveaway NIV gospel of Luke, in handsome large print type on quality paper will be handed out at special BSA events through their bicentenary year.  It’s received the same design attention as the other books- arguably it is the most important.

These BSA books are available from www.bibleshop.org.au

The 2.5 million selling Jesus Storybook Bible celebrates 10th anniversary

February 27, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

New clothbound hardcover edition, first-ever board book, and national tour with six-time Grammy award-winning singer Amy Grant round out celebration

Grand Rapids, MI— February 7, 2017— Zonderkidz is pleased to announce that The Jesus Storybook Bible, by New York Times bestselling author Sally Lloyd-Jones and award-winning illustrator Jago, is celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary in 2017. The beloved children’s storybook Bible has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 33 languages over the past decade.

To celebrate The Jesus Storybook Bible’s 10th Anniversary, author Sally Lloyd-Jones is joining up with Compassion International—a child-advocacy ministry—and her artist-friends Amy Grant and Ellie Holcomb for An Evening of Stories and Songs Tour.  This national tour will pair Grant’s and Holcomb’s music with stories from The Jesus Storybook Bible for an evening of worship and celebration.

Hailed as “a very grown-up children’s Bible” by Christianity Today, The Jesus Storybook Bible retells the stories of the Bible in a way that is simple enough for a child, yet profound enough for a theologian.

“It’s wonderful to celebrate 10 years!” said author Sally Lloyd-Jones. “I know we would never have reached this exciting milestone without all of the people who have read it and spoken about it and shared it. I am so grateful to them. I am also in no doubt whatsover about who is the author of the book’s success—and I give Him all the praise.”

Lloyd-Jones’s tender prose, combined with stunning illustrations by Jago, brings treasured Bible stories alive in startlingly fresh ways.

“I’m astounded at the incredible success of The Jesus Storybook Bible and I still find it slightly hard to comprehend that the illustrations I created at my home in Cornwall have now reached people all over the world,” said Jago. “I absolutely love picture books and have so many fond and vivid memories of them from my own childhood. It’s really quite amazing to think that my illustrations might be creating similar memories now for so many children around the world. I’m very grateful to Sally and Zondervan for choosing me to illustrate this book, its success has had a huge impact on my illustration career.”

The ECPA Platinum Book Award and multi-award winning storybook Bible has had eight editions since its debut in 2007. To celebrate the 10th Anniversary, Zonderkidz released a stunning clothbound hardcover gift edition. Appealing to the youngest audience, Zonderkidz also released the first board book from this brand, called Found. The beautifully illustrated, durable, toddler-friendly book is based on Psalm 23.

“The Jesus Storybook Bible has flourished over the past decade,” said Zonderkidz Senior VP and Publisher Annette Bourland.  “Sally writes in a way that is very engaging for both children and adults. Jago’s illustrations are the perfect complement to Sally’s words. Together, their work leaves all those who read The Jesus Storybook Bible amazed by God’s great love for them.”

The Jesus Storybook Bible has a passionate social media following with over 55,000 likes on Facebook and Twitter, and glowing reviews from media outlets like USA Today, Christianity Today, MTL (More to Life), Haven Today, and many others. The Jesus Storybook Bible has also been praised by a number of renowned religious leaders—from Ben Patterson to Tim Keller.

“I would urge not just families with young children to get this book, but every Christian—from pew warmers, to ministry leaders, seminarians and even theologians,” said Dr. Tim Keller, pastor of New York City’s Redeemer Church.  “Sally Lloyd-Jones has captured the heart of what it means to find Christ in all the scriptures, and has made clear even to little children that all God’s revelation has been about Jesus from the beginning—a truth not all that commonly recognized even among the very learned.”

The new gift edition of The Jesus Storybook Bible, Found and all branded products are available at retailers nationwide, worldwide and online. For more information about An Evening of Stories and Songs Tour, including tour dates and cities, visit https://www.storiesandsongstour.com/.

Tyndale House Publishers and Institute for Bible Reading form alliance for Bible engagement

February 27, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (February 21, 2017) – Tyndale House Publishers and the Institute for Bible Reading (IFBR) have announced an alliance to introduce new Bible reading practices to the church through innovative new Bible resources. The first major campaign from this alliance will launch this fall.

According to Tyndale Sr. Vice-President and Group Publisher Doug Knox, the alliance is a perfect match between two organizations who share the goal of helping people engage with the Bible more effectively.

“There was an instant connection during the first meeting between Tyndale and the Institute for Bible Reading,” states Knox. “It was obvious that by combining our experience, skills, and resources we could, with God’s blessing, revolutionize how individuals and churches engage with the Bible. I see Tyndale’s alliance with IFBR as a natural extension of our mission and purpose.”

Tyndale House was launched in 1962 by Dr. Kenneth Taylor with the publication of Living Letters, a modern paraphrase of Paul’s epistles. In 1971, The Living Bible was published, becoming the best-selling book in America for two years in a row with more than 45 million copies sold. Exactly 25 years later, Tyndale released the New Living Translation (NLT), a leading general-purpose translation prepared over a period of seven years by a group comprised of 90 leading Greek and Hebrew scholars.

The Institute for Bible Reading is an activist think-tank formed by a team with over 75 years of collective experience in Bible publishing and ministry. Its mission is to usher in a new era of Bible reading by challenging the paradigms of what it means to read and live the Bible well. IFBR convenes conversations with the world’s leading scholars and church leaders, conducts original research on effective Bible engagement, and creates innovative resources for churches to reshape conventional Bible forms and practices.

Scott Bolinder, one of IFBR’s four founding directors, says their team is determined to address the problem of why people stop reading the Bible. He says, “Christians know the Bible is important, but most of us struggle to read it well. We hope it will encourage and transform us, but over the centuries the Bible has been altered in ways that make it harder to read and understand. The good news is that people are still hungry for the Bible, and the Institute for Bible Reading can’t imagine a better partner than Tyndale to work alongside as we help people rediscover the Bible through fresh, innovative experiences.”

Tyndale House Publishers, founded in 1962, is one of the largest privately held Christian publishers of books, Bibles, and digital media in the world. Tyndale extends the ministry of its authors by contributing most of its profits to the nonprofit Tyndale House Foundation, which makes grants to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of people around the world. Originally founded to publish The Living Bible, a contemporary paraphrase of the Bible that became a global publishing phenomenon, Tyndale now publishes the Holy Bible, New Living Translation (NLT), the translation of choice for millions of people.www.tyndale.com

The Institute for Bible Reading is an activist think tank uncommonly focused on providing people tools and frameworks that fundamentally change the way they read the Bible so it can achieve its mission and become that story that defines their lives.  www.instituteforbiblereading. org
