Regarding his upcoming book release, Dr. Amen shares, “When the pandemic began, I wrote, ‘Mental hygiene is just as important as washing your hands. We need to eliminate the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) and tame the dragons that continue to breathe fire on our emotional centers.’ I know this book can bring hope and healing to anyone who reads it.”

Five IVP titles named 2021 Outreach Resources of the Year

March 1, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

WESTMONT, IL—Outreach magazine has named five IVP titles as 2021 Resources of the Year, with two additional books making the shortlist for the Also Recommended resource in its category.

“In an article published in the New York Times Sunday Book Review, author and essayist Daniel Mendelsohn said of literary awards, ‘Whatever the names on the plaques and medals, the real winner, in the end, is culture itself,’” Jeff Crosby, IVP’s publisher, said. “I believe Mendelsohn is right, and each of the IVP books honored by Outreach in this year’s awards reflect that truth. Each of these books on the church, racial reconciliation, social justice, counseling, and Christian spiritual growth are contributing to not only changes in the lives of readers but also to necessary change, growth, development, and hope within cultures in the United States and around the world. I am delighted that our authors’ and the IVP staff’s work has been recognized for the value it brings.”

The IVP books that were honored by Outreach this year include the following:

Analog Church: Why We Need Real People, Places, and Things in the Digital Age, Leadership Resource of the Year

Jay Y. Kim grapples with the ramifications of a digital church, from our worship and experience of Christian community to the way we engage Scripture and sacrament. He asks questions like, Are online churches, video venues, and brighter lights truly the future? What about the digital age’s effect on discipleship, community, and the Bible? Kim also received The Gospel Coalition’s 2020 First-Time Author Book Award.

The Beautiful Community: Unity, Diversity, and the Church at Its Best, Racial Reconciliation Resource of the Year

Pastor and theologian Irwyn L. Ince Jr. boldly unpacks the reasons for our divisions while gently guiding us toward our true hope for wholeness and reconciliation. Scott Sauls, author of Jesus Outside the Lines, said, “If you are eager to move forward in the triune God’s call to love and build community with those who are not like you, then this is the book for you.”

Also Recommended, Racial Reconciliation, Healing Racial Trauma: The Road to Resilience

As a child, Sheila Wise Rowe was bused across town to a majority white school, where she experienced the racist lie that one group is superior to all others. Rowe, now a professional counselor, exposes the symptoms of racial trauma to lead readers to a place of freedom from the past and new life for the future. In each chapter, she includes an interview with a person of color to explore how we experience and resolve racial trauma. Healing Racial Trauma also received a Christianity Today 2021 Book Award in the Christian Living/Discipleship category.

Compassion (&) Conviction: The AND Campaign’s Guide to Faithful Civic Engagement, Social Issues and Justice Resource of the Year

Justin Giboney, Michael Wear, and Chris Butler represent the AND Campaign, which exists to educate and organize Christians for faithful civic and cultural engagement. They insist that not only are we called to love our neighbors through the political process but also that doing so requires us to transcend the binary way the debates are usually framed. In simple, understandable language, they lay out the biblical case for political engagement and help Christians navigate the complex world of politics with integrity, from political messaging and the politics of race to protests, advocacy, and more.

Reading While Black: African American Biblical Interpretation as an Exercise in Hope, Christian Living Resource of the Year

New Testament scholar Esau McCaulley calls the church to a dynamic theological engagement with Scripture, in which Christians of diverse backgrounds dialogue with their own social location as well as the cultures of others. Nijay K. Gupta, professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary, said, “Reading While Black is a unique and successful blend of biblical hermeneutics, autobiography, black history and spirituality, incisive cultural commentary on race matters in America, and insightful exegesis of select New Testament texts.” McCaulley was also recently honored with the 2020 Emerging Public Intellectual Award and received the Christianity Today 2021 Beautiful Orthodoxy Award for Reading While Black.

Also Recommended, Christian Living, The Way Up Is Down: Becoming Yourself by Forgetting Yourself

For Marlena Graves, formation and justice always intertwine on the path to a balanced life of both action and contemplation. In these pages Graves describes the process of emptying herself that allows her to move upward toward God and become the true self that God calls her to. Drawing on the rich traditions of Eastern and Western Christian saints, she shares stories and insights that have enlivened her transformation.

When Narcissism Comes to Church: Healing Your Community From Emotional and Spiritual Abuse, Counseling and Relationships Resource of the Year

Chuck DeGroat has been counseling pastors with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, as well as those wounded by narcissistic leaders and systems, for over twenty years. He knows firsthand the devastation narcissism leaves in its wake and how insidious and painful it is. In When Narcissism Comes to Church, DeGroat takes a close look at narcissism, not only in ministry leaders but also in church systems. He offers compassion and hope for those affected by its destructive power and imparts wise counsel for churches looking to heal from its systemic effects. DeGroat also offers hope for narcissists themselves—not by any shortcut, but by the long, slow road of genuine recovery, possible only through repentance and trust in the humble gospel of Jesus.

Outreach Resources of the Year aims to highlight valuable resources for church leaders and bring deserved attention to resources that can help churches better engage in effective outreach to share the gospel and reach their communities for Christ. More than 150 resources published between November 1, 2019, and October 31, 2020, were submitted for consideration and placed into categories. An expert in each category evaluated the resources and chose what they considered to be the best. The experts also chose how many resources to recognize and whether to include any as an Also Recommended resource. The resources will be featured in the March/April issue of Outreach magazine.

NavPress’s Renovated by Dr. Jim Wilder selected as Outreach Magazine Resource of the Year in Church category

March 1, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. (February 25, 2021) – Outreach Magazine (www.outreachmagazine.com), which provides practical resources for pastors and volunteer leadership, has announced that NavPress (@NavPress) book Renovated: God, Dallas Willard, and the Church That Transforms (SC, 978-1-64158-167-7, April 2020) by Dr. Jim Wilder has been selected as its Resource of the Year in the Church category. The book will be highlighted in an upcoming issue of Outreach as well as online.

Dr. Wilder, a neurotheologian and founder of Life Model Works, draws on the teachings of the beloved mentor in Christian spiritual formation Dallas Willard to show that neurology confirms what Christianity has quietly affirmed all along—humans are formed far more by whom we love than by what we believe. By framing Christian faith as a loving attachment to God rather than just a set of beliefs to hold to, Dr. Wilder offers a way to go beyond sin management and toward deeper transformation into the image of Christ.

David Zimmerman, NavPress acquisitions editor, said “I’m not at all surprised that Jim Wilder’s Renovated has proven so helpful for the church. The inner workings of our minds, the hidden functions of our brains, the discipling of our emotions, and the Spirit moving in us and transforming us—these great mysteries are where we have the most to learn, the most room for growth. We’re all very grateful for the insight Jim brought to this book into how we come to be the kind of people who think with God, and we’re grateful for the passion he brings to the task of helping people move toward emotional and spiritual maturity.”

An Outreach excerpt from Wilder’s book is available here:  Salvation Is a New Attachment – OutreachMagazine.com

For additional information about Renovated, as well as other NavPress products, visit: www.navpress.com.

Dr. Jim Wilder is a neurotheologian who has trained leaders and counselors for nearly 30 years on five continents. The founder of Life Model Works, he is an expert on the intersection of theology and brain science. He is coauthor of Rare Leadership and Living from the Heart Jesus Gave You.

The mission of NavPress is to advance the calling of The Navigators by bringing biblically rooted, culturally relevant, and highly practical products to people who want to know and love Christ more deeply. Through The Message Bible and other insightful resources, NavPress seeks to bring positive spiritual movement to people’s lives. In January 2014, NavPress entered into an alliance with Tyndale House Publishers to strengthen and better position NavPress and its rich content for the future. NavPress provides books and other content that bring spiritual impact and life transformation, and help lead in the mission of making disciples.

Andrew Peterson returns to Ryman Auditorium for “Easter Monday” events

March 1, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

Livestreaming Internationally, Events Highlight Music From Peterson’s 5-Star-Acclaimed Resurrection Letters Anthology

ChildFund, Samaritan Ministries, B&H Publishing Group Sponsor Events Featuring Taylor Leonhardt, Skye Peterson

Recording artist, songwriter, producer, filmmaker, publisher and award-winning author Andrew Peterson returns to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, bringing his “Easter Monday” to the iconic venue for back-to-back events April 5. Featuring a full band, singer / songwriter Taylor Leonhardt and special guest Skye Peterson, the limited capacity evening presentation is already nearly sold-out and a second matinee has been added.

Peterson is also inviting those not able to attend in-person to join the “Easter Monday” event via livestream from anywhere in the world. The livestream begins at 7:00 pm CT on April 5 with single household and congregation / group tickets available now at andrew-peterson.com/easter-monday. Congregations / groups that order before March 26 will also receive a personalized greeting video from Peterson.

While at the Ryman, Peterson will lead fan favorites from his expansive song catalogue along with a special focus on his highly-acclaimed Resurrection Letters Anthology that includes the Prologue, Volume 1 and Volume 2 album trilogy. Prologue is a collection of five “waiting songs” meant to remind listeners of the gravity of the crucifixion while Volume 1 features his globally-sung call and response anthem for the church, “Is He Worthy,” and begins with the heartbeat of the resurrected Christ, exploring the resurrection itself and its centrality to Christianity. Volume 2 songs delve thematically into the implications of Christ’s resurrection victory over sin and death.

“The Resurrection Letters songs were ten years in the making. I cried more joyful tears during the process of writing and recording them than any others because the subject matter is so very good and beautiful and true,” says Peterson. “It’s my sincere hope that the same feeling will be reflected on this Easter Monday – that you’ll be moved to greater gratitude, greater awe, and greater love for our Lord after dwelling on these songs and singing them with us. He is risen, indeed.”

This year’s “Andrew Peterson’s Easter Monday at the Ryman” concert is being sponsored by ChildFund, a child development organization based in Richmond, VA that is committed to improving the well-being of children in some of the world’s poorest places. The event is also sponsored by Samaritan Ministries, a community of Christians paying one another’s medical bills, and B&H Publishing Group, an imprint of LifeWay Christian Resources and a team of mission minded people with a passion for taking God’s Word to the world.

In addition to his music and touring, Peterson’s novels in his wildly imaginative fantasy adventure series, The Wingfeather Saga, have released in special editions from WaterBrook/Penguin Random House. The six books are available as collector’s hardcovers that include all new illustrations and hand-drawn maps, intrinsic to the classic and imaginative Wingfeather style.

Peterson also released his first adult trade book, Adorning the Dark: Thoughts on Community, Calling, and the Mystery of Making. Receiving awards from Christianity Today, WORLD Magazine, The Gospel Coalition and more, this memoir of Peterson’s journey shares the intersection of his songwriting, storytelling and vocation, along with nuts-and-bolts exploration of the great mystery of creativity.

Baker Publishing Group signs powerful devotional of justice and lament by women of color, led by Natasha Sistrunk Robinson

March 1, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

Ada, Mich. (March 1, 2021)— Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, recently signed author Natasha Sistrunk Robinson as editor and contributing writer of a powerful collection of devotions of justice and lament for and by women of color inspired by Psalm 37—featuring the voices of contributors Vivian Mabuni, Sandra Van Opstal, Cole Arthur Riley (Black Liturgies), Patricia Raybon, Marlena Graves, Kathy Khang, and more.

This significant book, scheduled for a fall 2022 release, offers a place for Christian women of color who have faced deep suffering and injustice in their communities to hold their lament in holy tension with hope and love in this collection of devotions, poems, liturgies, and prayer.

“With this book and its group of writers, Natasha is bringing women of color together in a community of sacred belonging that both inspires and instructs me,” said Kelsey Bowen, Revell acquisitions editor. “I’m thankful for her trust in Revell to bring this unique book to our readers. The God-given words from these writers will bless fellow women of color and sit with all readers for a long time.”

Robinson says, “It is with honor and great humility that I am entrusted to steward the voices, stories, and history of women of color from across the world. We know about suffering and lament. We stand for justice and fight for the least of these. We follow in the footsteps of our mothers and ancestors who have strong histories of persisting in the struggle for righteousness, while weary and hopeful. We have been doing this sacred work together in our communities for a mighty long time, and that is why we are best positioned to lead when the world and the church in the United States is in so much upheaval. It is with my deepest love for God and his people that I offer the gift of this book to the church, and to do so in partnership with the Revell team, who have not only spoken to the systemic injustices in the church and within the Christian publishing industry but are intentionally taking actions to correct them and chart a new way ahead.”

Natasha Sistrunk Robinson is the author of A Sojourner’s Truth and Mentor for Life, and host of the A Sojourner’s Truth: Conversations for a Changing Culture podcast. She intentionally serves as a credible witness of Christ’s leadership to engage, equip, and empower people to live and lead on purpose. She is the president of T3 Leadership Solutions, Inc., where she provides consulting, speaking, training, and leadership executive coaching services. As the visionary founder and chairperson of Leadership LINKS, Inc., she is committed to cultivating an intergenerational and multiethnic network of leaders who are committed to using their skills and resources for the greater good of humanity. Natasha is a doctorate of ministry student at North Park Theological Seminary, and a graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Charlotte (cum laude, M.A. Christian Leadership) and the U.S. Naval Academy. A former Marine Corps officer, she has over 20 years of leadership and mentoring experience in the military, government, church, seminary, and nonprofit sectors.
