Veteran agent opens Gardner Literary

December 16, 2020 by Sheri Toomb

Seeks Authors with Fresh Perspectives

Colorado Springs, CO, December 16, 2020 — Literary agent Rachelle Gardner, formerly of Books & Such Literary Management, announces the formation of Gardner Literary, a full-service agency representing diverse authors at the crossroads of faith and culture.

Gardner has been an agent since 2007 when she joined WordServe Literary. She moved to Books & Such in 2012, where she established her reputation by representing powerful voices in the Christian market. She represented the late Rachel Held Evans for the entirety of her book publishing career and continues to represent Evans’ estate. She represented the New York Times bestseller, I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown.

Gardner will bring many of her established authors to the new agency, including Sarah Bessey (Jesus Feminist), Kaitlin Curtice (Native), and Kathi Lipp (Clutter Free). She also brings several authors of popular Christian fiction, including Kristy Cambron, Sarah Ladd, and Catherine West. The coming year will see debut books from popular Instagrammers Terry Stokes, Candice Benbow, Marcie Alvis-Walker, and Cole Arthur Riley.

Janet Kobobel Grant, founder and president of Books & Such, says, “When Rachelle approached me about starting her own agency, I couldn’t disagree with her reasoning: she wanted to do as I had in 1996 when I started Books & Such—explore what an agency that reflected her passions would look like. After nine years of working together, I’m reluctant to see her leave, but I know we’ll remain close friends and colleagues. I wish her every success.”

Moving forward, Gardner plans to continue working in both the Christian and general markets. She will represent a diversity of authors, focusing on up-and-coming voices in the faith community as well as explorations of social issues. She’ll also represent a limited catalog of fiction.

“I’ve always seen it as my mission to elevate important voices that might otherwise not be heard,” Gardner says. “I started by focusing on women, and eventually began actively seeking authors of color. I’m fascinated by books that expand my awareness and make me think a little deeper—but I also love being entertained by good fiction! My list reflects my eclectic interests.”

Further information and submission information is available at www.gardner-literary.com.

Meadows Wye warns of serious global supply chain disruption

December 14, 2020 by Sheri Toomb

ECPA member Meadows Wye just sent this notice to their clients:

All forwarders, brokers, and shippers are facing an serious disruption in the global supply chain.

All origin ports continue to face equipment shortages, rolled bookings and ever increasing freight costs due to unprecedented demand.

Asia to USA & Canada, as of Dec. 9th, liner carriers have implemented an “Emergency Intermodal Surcharge” EIT, US$ 350.00 per FEU on all cargoes to inland points via rail.

Destination ports are dealing with congested piers, long trucker gate wait & dwell times inside terminals, chassis shortages and extreme difficulties returning empty containers, compounding the chassis shortages, and limiting trucker productivity.

In the USA, the ports of New York and New Jersey,  and Los Angeles and Long Beach, are the most critical, leading to delays, pier storage and equipment per diem / rent due to all the port congestion and inefficiencies.

On US All Water Service, Pier Storage & Per Diem rent on Full Containers, including the additional Chassis express, the cost increased to an additional minimum of US$ 400.00 per 20’ and 40’.  Mini Land Bridge Rail storage, Per Diem & additional Chassis cost is a minimum of  US$ 575.00 per 20’ and 40’.

In the UK, all ports are barely functional.

All is expected to remain critical into 2021.

Meadows Wye is steeped in maritime tradition dating back to Great Britain in the 1800’s. Our company has long and loyal commitments to both our foreign operating partners and clientele. These are relationships that continue to thrive over the decades. Meadows Wye USA was incorporated in 1903 and holds one of the oldest US Customs Brokerage Licenses in the United States. Published in June of 2016, Soul Care explores seven principles that can lead to lasting transformation and freedom for all who struggle with a broken, damaged, and sin-stained soul.  Brokenness grasps for the soul of humanity. We are broken body, soul, and spirit, and we need the healing touch of Jesus. Soul Care explores seven principles that are profound healing tools of God: securing your identity, repentance, breaking family sin patterns, forgiving others, healing wounds, overcoming fears, and deliverance.

Rev. Dr. Rob Reimer is Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, New York. Although he came to the seminary full-time in Fall 2017, he has been teaching there in the doctoral and master’s programs for 15 years while serving as Founding and Lead Pastor of South Shore Community Church, in Brockton, Massachusetts. Under Rob’s leadership, what began as a small group of eight believers mobilized on a mission to start a new church, resulting in hundreds of people coming to faith in Christ. “Gentle and Lowly” reaches 100,000 in print sales with Crossway

December 6, 2020 by Sheri Toomb

WHEATON, Ill.— Crossway is pleased to announce that Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (Crossway, April 2020) by Dane Ortlund has surpassed 100,000 units in print sales.

Gentle and Lowly draws readers to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. Ortlund dives into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encourages readers with the affections of Christ for his people, showing how Christ’s longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains believers in their up-and-down lives.

“What happens when you combine the heart of a pastor, the training of a New Testament scholar, and the skill of an amazing writer, and then set him loose on helping us to behold the most beautiful subject in all the world—the heart of Christ for sinners like us? We get Dane Ortlund’s Gentle and Lowly,” says Justin Taylor, Crossway’s executive vice president of book publishing and book publisher. “We give all glory to God for the amazing reception of this powerful book, with prayer that a hundred thousand more people would absorb this life-transforming message.”

Ortlund writes, “The same Christ who wept at the tomb of Lazarus weeps with us in our lonely despair. The same one who reached out and touched lepers puts his arm around us today when we feel misunderstood and sidelined. The Jesus who reached out and cleansed messy sinners reaches into our souls and answers our half-hearted plea for mercy with the mighty invincible cleansing of one who cannot bear to do otherwise. In other words, Christ’s heart is not far off despite his presence now in heaven, for he does all this by his own Spirit.”

Gentle and Lowly is available in hardcover, ebook, and audio formats. The book has received acclamations from Sam Allberry (speaker and author of 7 Myths about Singleness), Paul David Tripp (president of Paul Tripp Ministries and author of New Morning Mercies), and others.

Dane C. Ortlund (PhD, Wheaton College) serves as senior pastor of Naperville Presbyterian Church in Naperville, Illinois. He is an editor for the Knowing the Bible series and the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, and is the author of several books, including Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers. Dane lives with his wife, Stacey, and their five children in Naperville, Illinois.

Crossway celebrates four TGC Book Award Winners in 2020

December 6, 2020 by Sheri Toomb

December 4, 2020, WHEATON, Ill.— Crossway is excited to announce that four books—The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self; Gentle and Lowly; Lead; and Arlo and the Great Big Cover-Up—have been named winners in their respective categories for the Gospel Coalition’s 2020 Book Awards.

The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution (Crossway, November 2020) by Carl R. Trueman was awarded in the Public Theology & Current Events category. In this timely book, Trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom—rather than the cause—of the human search for identity. TGC writes, “Any Christian who wants to understand the social, cultural, and political convulsions that the West in general, and the United States in particular, are now experiencing should read this book.”

Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (Crossway, April 2020) by Dane Ortlund was the winner in the Popular Theology category. Ortlund dives into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encourages readers with the affections of Christ for his people. “Over the course of 23 short chapters, Ortlund models patient biblical reflection and channels the best Puritan thought in this searching and multifaceted study of Jesus’s heart,” observes TGC.

Paul David Tripp was recognized in the Ministry category for his book Lead: 12 Gospel Principles for Leadership in the Church (Crossway, September 2020). Tripp draws on his decades of ministry experience to give churches principles that will enable new and experienced leaders alike to focus their attention on the ultimate leadership model: the gospel. TGC says, “Here is a vital survival guide for any pastor in any church.”

Arlo and the Great Big Cover-Up (Crossway, June 2020) by Betsy Childs Howard, illustrated by Samara Hardy, was awarded in the Children’s category. With easy-to-understand language and engaging illustrations, children will learn important lessons with Arlo about repentance and the forgiveness found only in Jesus. TGC comments, “The book’s illustrations are simple, bright, and engaging even as we’re reminded about the forgiveness found in Christ.”

Justin Taylor, Crossway’s executive vice president of book publishing and book publisher, says “The TGC Book Awards are especially meaningful to Crossway given our deep admiration for TGC’s gospel-centered fidelity and discernment. We are truly honored—and give thanks to God—for the four awards and the two honorable mentions.”

Titles that received honorable mentions include An Introduction to John Owen (Crossway, July 2020) by Crawford Gribben in the History & Biography category and Family Discipleship (Crossway, August 2020) by Matt Chandler and Adam Griffin for the Christian Living category.

The Gospel Coalition, founded in 2005, reviews nearly 300 books per year on their website and in their academic journal, Themelios. Awards are given to titles that are gospel-centered, faithful to Scripture, spiritually discerning, and unifying and renewing for the church.

Founded in 1938, Crossway is a not-for-profit global Christian publishing ministry that publishes gospel-centered, Bible-based content to honor our Savior and serve his church. Trevin Wax’s new book wins The Gospel Coalition Book Award

December 2, 2020 by Sheri Toomb

B&H gets 4 other honorable mentions

[NASHVILLE, TENN.,  December 2, 2020—] Trevin Wax’s latest book “Rethink Your Self: The Power of Looking Up Before Looking In” (October 2020, B&H Publishing) was recently honored with the Evangelism & Apologetics Award (tie) in the The Gospel Coalition 2020 Book Awards, announced Nov. 30.

“It’s a joy to see our colleague Trevin Wax being recognized for a valuable contribution to the Christian discourse,” said Devin Maddox, V.P. of Trade Book Publishing. “We live in a complex world, and trustworthy guides like Trevin provide a great service as we all strive to sort through a vast array of issues.”

In addition, four other B&H titles were named “Honorable Mentions” in their respective categories:

  • Public Theology & Current Events: “The Courage to Stand: Facing Your Fear without Losing Your Soul” (October 2020, B&H Publishing) by Russell Moore
  • First-Time Author: “Deep Discipleship: How the Church Can Make Whole Disciples of Jesus” by J.T. English (September 2020, B&H Publishing)
  • Academic Theology: “The Holy Spirit, Theology for the People of God” by Gregg Allison and Andreas Köstenberger (June 2020, B&H Academic)
  • Children’s: “Where Is Wisdom? A Treasure Hunt Through God’s Wondrous World, Inspired by Job 28” by Scott James (March 2020, B&H Kids)

Wax’s book tied with Rebecca Manley Pippert’s book “Stay Salt: The World Has Changed: Our Message Must Not” (The Good Book Company). The judges for the Evangelism & Apologetics category were Hunter Beaumont, Jen Pollock Michel, Doug Logan and J.T. English. Their comments about “Rethink Your Self” were as follows:

“Trevin Wax steps further back and examines one dominant theme in the modern zeitgeist that is obscuring the gospel: how we construct a sense of self. In ‘Rethink Your Self,’ he observes that 91 percent of Americans agree with the statement, ‘The best way to find yourself is by looking within yourself.’

In common discourse this shows up in all kinds of pop proverbs—’follow your heart,’ ‘you are enough,’ ‘you do you,’ ‘be true to yourself.’ Jesus’s teaching, however, can’t be squeezed into this container. In fact, his call to repent is a radical challenge to it. Wax unpacks Jesus’s countercultural message in a voice that is provocative, smart, and inviting, showing that our new self in Christ is truer and better.”

The full list of awards can be found here.
