Crossway appoints New Chief Publishing Officer and Bible Publisher

August 17, 2020 by Sheri Toomb

WHEATON, Ill.—Crossway is pleased to announce that Executive Vice President of Production Don Jones has been promoted to the position of Crossway’s Chief Publishing Officer and Bible Publisher as of August 14, 2020, replacing Dr. Dane Ortlund, who recently left Crossway to pursue a call to vocational pastoral ministry.

Reflecting on Ortlund’s significant contributions to Crossway’s ministry since his hiring in 2010, Crossway President Josh Dennis notes, “It’s been a joy to work alongside Dane over these last ten years and we thank God for his significant contributions to Crossway’s Bible publishing ministry. While we will miss him dearly, we are also very excited for him to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a third-generation pastor—a calling that aligns with Crossway’s core mission ‘to help people understand the massive implications of the gospel and the truth of God’s Word, for all of life, for all eternity, and for the glory of God.’” Dennis continued, “God has gifted Dane as a preacher and also as a writer. We are grateful for our partnership with him as a Crossway author and look forward to his preaching ministry in the future.”

Ortlund is the author of Edwards on the Christian Life (2014) and most recently Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (2020)—a volume well-known pastor and author Mark Dever has called “one of the best books I’ve ever read.” Ortlund also serves as editor for Crossway’s Knowing the Bible series and Short Studies in Biblical Theology series.

Don Jones, who joined Crossway in 2007 as a Bible Project Manager, was the ministry’s first exclusively Bible-focused hire and has played an instrumental role in establishing Crossway as a leader in Bible publishing. Under his leadership, Crossway’s Bible production team conceptualized, developed, and produced a host of innovative Bible editions, including the ESV Reader’s Bible, Six-Volume Set (2016); the ESV Illuminated Bible, Art Journaling Edition (2017); and the best-selling ESV Scripture Journals (2018), and helped to oversee production for many other ESV Bible resources, including the award-winning ESV Study Bible (2008).

In his new role as Chief Publishing Officer, Jones—who holds a BA in Business Management from Hope College and an MA in Biblical Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary—will oversee all aspects of Crossway’s publishing activities, including acquisitions, editorial, production, and manufacturing.

“God has prepared and equipped Don for his new role as Chief Publishing Officer and Bible Publisher,” comments Josh Dennis. “His background in production and manufacturing, along with his godly discernment with regard to content, will allow him to bring all facets of our publishing efforts together and enable him to provide leadership to our entire publishing division.” Dr. Justin Taylor will continue to serve as Executive Vice President of Book Publishing and Book Publisher, working closely with Jones in his new role.

Crossway is also pleased to announce plans to welcome Dr. Doug O’Donnell as Senior Vice President of Bible Publishing. A published author who currently serves as Senior Pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Elgin, Illinois, O’Donnell brings years of ministry experience as well as a wealth of biblical and theological training to his new role overseeing the editorial process for all ESV Bibles published by Crossway.

“We are thrilled to have Doug join the Crossway team,” Dennis notes. “He has been a friend of Crossway for years and has worked closely with us on a number of Bible resources.”

O’Donnell holds a BA and MA from Wheaton College, an MA from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a PhD from the University of Aberdeen.

Dennis concludes, “As we seek to transmit the treasure of the gospel to the next generation, we have been encouraged by God’s provision and leading, and seek to remain faithful to our calling to gospel-centered publishing.”

Hollywoodland Audiobooks — named for the original iconic sign in the hills above the Hollywood neighborhood — is a passion project of Oasis Family Media President Steve Smith. “I want to tell the stories that dig beyond the surface of icons,” said Smith. “We’re unearthing the layers of true stories that built the classic films and stars you might think you already know.”

The imprint’s debut release will be The Making of Casablanca (print edition originally published in 1992 as Round Up the Usual Suspects). The audiobook will be available September 8 and is narrated by industry powerhouse Scott Brick.

Other acquisitions for the Hollywoodland catalog include Myrna Loy: Being & Becoming, written by James Kotsilibas and Myrna Loy, and Charles Tranberg’s The Thin Man: Murder Over Cocktails. Both titles are narrated by Holly Palance and are scheduled for release in October.

Palance, an actress and journalist, has been entrenched in the film industry her entire life, as the daughter of Academy Award–winner Jack Palance. Palance said of the venture, “Hollywood is my hometown and I’m thrilled to team up with Steve Smith and Oasis to present the up-close-and-personal stories of the movies’ greatest stars.”

Hollywoodland audiobooks will be available on all major platforms.

Joel Rosenberg pens foreword to new VOM book release written by “the Billy Graham of Iran”

August 10, 2020 by Sheri Toomb

DALLAS, Texas – Joel Rosenberg, world-renowned Middle East expert and New York Times best-selling author, adamantly praised Dr. Hormoz Shariat’s upcoming book Iran’s Great Awakening (VOM Books) in his foreword.

“I consider Hormoz Shariat to be the Billy Graham of Iran,” said Rosenberg. “He is far and away the most watched and most influential Iranian evangelist in the world, and his story is well worth reading.”

In Iran’s Great Awakening, Shariat shares the details of his personal journey from the bondage of Islam to the freedom of Christ, including the process of establishing Iran Alive Ministries (IAM), an organization that reaches six million daily viewers in Iran through a satellite TV broadcast. Shariat also outlines the biblical prophecies about Iran, noting how they parallel current events, and ultimately concludes that Iran will be a Christian nation soon.

“Today, the mere mention of Iran often conjures up thoughts of war, terror and tragedy,” said Rosenberg. “But Hormoz and I believe a new day is coming. Soon, possibly very soon, the Lord Jesus will move His throne into the heart of Iran… The Islamic Republic will become the Christian Republic. The Islamic Revolution will become a Gospel Revolution.”

IAM reports the many efforts of the Iranian government to contain the spread of Christianity are failing, and God is raising up a Christian revival of historic proportions. For Shariat, this revival is personal.

In 1979, Shariat was a young Muslim on the streets of Tehran shouting “death to America!” while aiding the Islamic revolution. However, when the Islamic Government of Iran executed his 18-year-old brother, he had an encounter with God that changed his life forever. After this encounter, Shariat asked God to use his one life to save one million Muslim souls – which birthed his dream to create IAM.

Now, through the use of satellite broadcast, IAM reaches millions of Iranian Muslims worldwide with the gospel and has a significant role in the underground church planting movement in Iran. Since this ministry was founded January 1, 2000, Iran has been named the country with the fastest growing evangelical population in the world today.

Through Iran’s Great Awakening, Shariat examines this recent Christian revival in Iran by exploring the causes as well as the impact – on the Middle East and the rest of the world. He believes Iran is just the beginning of an unprecedented, massive move of God that is already sweeping over the earth.

“Shariat testifies first-hand that this prophetic, supernatural transformation has already begun in Iran,” said Rosenberg. “But it is far from complete. More is coming. Much more. He wants you to be part of it, and so do I.”

Iran’s Great Awakening will inform, encourage and inspire readers into revival. It will be available for public purchase on September 1, 2020 wherever books are sold. Find out more information at iranalive.org/awakening.
