Broadway hit HAMILTON’s spiritual themes explored in new book from Deep River Books

June 4, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

God and Hamilton coming June 7, 2018

Sisters, Oregon (June 1, 2018) — Many audience members leave Hamilton: An American Musical feeling they experienced something spiritual. This may be in part due to the transcendent nature of theatre, but it’s also due to the spiritual themes of Alexander Hamilton’s life. Kansas pastor Kevin Cloud explores these themes in his new book God and Hamilton: Spiritual Themes from the Life of Alexander Hamilton & the Broadway Musical He Inspired.

Cloud, like many, was deeply moved when he saw Hamilton on Broadway in the fall of 2016. “The night I saw the show, I found myself unexpectedly drawn into the presence of God,” he writes in God and Hamilton’s introduction. He went home and read Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton. As he read, he continued to note and reflect on the spiritual themes of Hamilton’s life—the same themes he noticed in his own life and in Scripture. These reflections provided the basis of his book.

God and Hamilton’s twelve chapters focus on topics such as grace, equality, despair, and redemption. Details from the musical, both on the stage and behind the scenes, naturally spur further Scripture-based discussion of each theme. Mike Breen, author of Building a Discipling Culture, Covenant and Kingdom, and Family on Mission, praises God and Hamilton, saying, “Kevin portrays a wonderful example of how you can draw from contemporary culture to understand how God works with us on our own heroic journeys. I found his emphasis on God’s grace and faithfulness particularly inspiring and think that all who read it will come away with a better understanding of the challenges we all face. I cannot recommend it more highly!”

KEVIN CLOUD has always seen a deep connection between the arts and the spiritual life. He holds a music degree from the University of Kansas and a MDiv from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He currently pastors at Midwest Fellowship in Kansas City, where he lives with his wife, Allison, and their four sons, Samuel, Benjamin, Andrew, and Levi. Cloud’s new book, God and Hamilton, is published by Deep River Books and releases on June 7, 2018.

Koorong marks 40 years of providing life-changing Christian resources to all Australians

June 4, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

This June, Koorong celebrates 40 years of service to the Body of Christ in Australia. The Christian book retailer first opened its doors on June 8 th 1978, as Australia’s first specialist Christian bookstore.

With a focus on giving Australians more immediate access to vital Christian resources, Koorong has been making a difference for four decades. As a result, it’s no surprise that Koorong has become more than just a retailer…

Recently, a woman returned to Koorong’s store in Penrith, western Sydney almost two years after her desperate first visit. Two years earlier, this woman had been on a train to the Blue Mountains with the intention of going into the bush and ending her life. But as she neared Penrith, she saw the Koorong sign with its dove logo on the rear of the building. For some reason, she felt compelled to get out of the train and go into the store to find out about God and what Koorong could possibly offer her.

At the store she met manager Warren and another staff member, who talked to her and prayed with her. Warren gave her a copy of Brennan Manning’s Christian classic The Ragamuffin Gospel, which explains that no matter what we have done, who we are or what we do, God’s love for us never changes.

Warren urged the woman to promise to read the book and not harm herself. That was the last Warren saw of her until she returned to the store with a smile and a couple of young children in tow. The woman thanked Warren and Koorong for the book, their prayers and their kindness.

She told him it had saved her life and was helping her find a full and satisfying life in Jesus.

Now, as the Christian bookstore celebrates its 40th anniversary, Koorong believes it’s a “reminder about how what we do impacts the Kingdom of God.”

Fast facts:

  • More than 49% of Koorong’s customers are aged between 25 and 44.
  • Baptists, Pentecostals, and Anglicans are the largest denominational groups that buy Christian resources through Koorong.
  • There were nine(9) major English Bible translations available at Koorong in 1978. They now sell more than 30 major English translations and a plethora of foreign language translations.
  • Koorong operates online as well as in 15 stores across Australia.

In August 2015, Koorong was acquired by Bible Society Australia; the company’s proceeds now assist with Bible translation, distribution and engagement, both here in Australia and around the world.

B&H acquires “Minneapolis Miracle” star and Denver Broncos quarterback Case Keenum

June 4, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

Playing for More to release in September

NASHVILLE, TENN. (June 4, 2018)—In 2017, Case Keenum captured America’s imagination by leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 13-3 record and an NFC North title. His game-winning touchdown in the final seconds of their divisional playoff game against the Saints, the “Minneapolis Miracle,” made Keenum part of NFL history.

B&H Publishing Group is proud to announce that it has acquired Keenum, now the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. His first book, Playing for More: Trust Beyond What You Can See, is set to release in September. Keenum will share stories from every stage of life and explain how being a Christian helped him navigate the winding paths of both adversity and success in the NFL.

“Am I a football player who happens to be a Christian?” Keenum asks. “No, I’m a Christian who happens to be a football player. That’s my calling. That’s my defining characteristic.”

Playing for More is written with Andrew Perloff, an on-air personality on the television and radio sports talk program “The Dan Patrick Show” and contributing writer for SportsIllustrated.com. Tony Dungy, New York Times bestselling author and former NFL head coach, will pen the foreword to Playing for More.

“As I’ve gotten to know Case better, I’ve learned that his primary motivation as a player, and as a leader, is to point people to the Lord,” Dungy wrote in the foreword of Playing for More. “He loves playing the game of football, loves being around his teammates and he definitely wants to use his gifts to help his team win. But none of those things are the real reason he plays football and why he competes so hard. More than anything else, he wants to show young people that the most important thing in his life is his relationship with Jesus. That’s why he plays. That’s why he trains so hard and has sacrificed so much to become an excellent player. And that’s why he has written this book.”

B&H will support Playing for More with a national media tour, heavy promotions through Fellowship of Christian Athletes and NFL media, and a national marketing and advertising campaign.

Keenum is represented by the literary agency of The Fedd Agency, Inc., Post Office Box 341973, Austin, Texas 78734.

“Case Keenum is the real deal,” said Devin Maddox, B&H Trade Publisher. “He is a guy who gets that life is more than what we do—though what he has done in his career is amazing—and we can’t wait to see how his vision for influencing others through football will extend long into the future, and beyond sports.”

Former Thomas Nelson CEO, Sam Moore, passes

June 4, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

(Nashville, Tenn.) June 4, 2018 – Today, the hearts of HarperCollins Christian Publishing employees are mourning the loss of a dear friend and former leader.   On the afternoon of June 1, 2018, Sam Moore, former CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers and founder of Royal Publishing, passed away.

Born in Beirut, Sam Ziady Moore was a 19-year-old Lebanese immigrant who moved to America in the 1950s with only 600 dollars in savings and a dream to attend college.  He began to sell Bibles door-to-door to pay for his tuition, and in 1958, Moore established his own company, National Book Publishers in Nashville, Tenn.  In 1961, Moore founded Royal Publishing, a fast-growing Christian publisher, by enlisting strategic partners like the late-American entrepreneur Jack C. Massey, co-founder of Hospital Corporation of America and Kentucky Fried Chicken, for capital and business advice.  In the late 1960s, Moore was approached by Thomas Nelson and Sons—a religious publishing house based in New York, originally founded in Edinburg, Scotland—with interest to purchase Royal Publishing. Moore declined, but instead made an offer to purchase Thomas Nelson, and in 1969 Royal Publishing adopted the Thomas Nelson name, dropping “and Sons,” to gain more international brand recognition.  Moore moved the Thomas Nelson publishing operations to Nashville, TN, where they remain today.

As the CEO of Thomas Nelson, Moore grew the company into one of the world’s largest evangelical publishing houses, acquiring multiple publishers and imprints, with internationally recognized authors like Jerry Falwell, Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, Dr. David Jeremiah, Anne Graham Lotz, Max Lucado, John MacArthur, John Maxwell, Charles Stanley, Charles Swindoll and Zig Ziglar among others.  One of Moore’s most ambitious business decisions came in the late 1970s when his then 10-year-old son said he could not understand the King James Version of the Bible. Moore was inspired to initiate a comprehensive 4.5 million-dollar translation project utilizing the expertise of 130 commissioned Bible scholars. Seven years later, the New King James Version translation of the Bible was published for the first time in 1983 under Moore’s leadership in an effort to make the Bible easier to read and understand.  The project was said to be the high-point in Moore’s faith-journey, one that was started and inspired by American missionaries in Lebanon.

Moore retired in 2005 after nearly 47 years as CEO of Thomas Nelson but continued to remain in close connection to the leaders who followed in his footsteps.  Mark Schoenwald, named president and CEO of Thomas Nelson in 2011 and current president and CEO of HarperCollins Christian Publishing said, “Sam was a unique man who embraced God’s plan for his life every day with courage and enthusiasm.  He dedicated his life’s work to preach and teach the good news of the Gospel.  Sam impacted and changed the lives of countless people with his time, effort and resources.  We are grateful for his vision and dedication to building our company, and appreciated his extended friendship after his retirement.  We are praying for his family, especially his wife Peggy, but we take comfort in knowing that Sam is now in his eternal home and at peace.”

In the weeks leading up to his passing, Moore spent his time at home with his family and loved ones.  His son, Joseph “Joe” Moore, said, “Dad had a deep well of energy that he fueled into his love of family, work, travel and missions.  He was a strong leader and a loving patriarch to our family.  He led by example and taught each of us to not only dream big, but to find our calling and then work diligently and faithfully, always giving our best.”

The Moore family requests contributions or donations in memoriam of Mr. Moore should be made to any of the ministries listed below.  These were all organizations he supported throughout his life.
