Christianity Today releases One Kingdom vision for the ministry’s next season

September 9, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

Wheaton, IL September 9, 2024 – Christianity Today announces the public phase of the first comprehensive campaign in its 68-year history. Named The One Kingdom Campaign, this bold and hopeful vision seeks to raise $28 million through 2026, its 70th anniversary, and will guide the next season of kingdom-focused ministry.

Through elevating the stories and ideas of the kingdom of God in various media, formats, and innovative programs, CT’s One Kingdom Campaign endeavors to reenchant the Church with Christ and his kingdom, recast a captivating vision of what it means to follow Jesus in our time, and regather a community around that vision.

President and CEO Timothy Dalrymple shares, “Christianity Today exists to help all people love Christ and his kingdom. These are challenging times for the Church. It can be hard to find our way. Our hope and prayer is that The One Kingdom Campaign helps believers unite across continents, across generations, and across the dividing lines of our culture. We want to help the Church remember its first love and cast once again a compelling and capacious vision of what it looks like to follow Christ wholeheartedly and sacrificially.”

The campaign funds three strategic initiatives. The Global Initiative dramatically expands CT’s footprint to lift up the stories and ideas of believers around the world. The Next Gen Initiative supports the ministry’s growth in new media to show younger generations how beautiful it can be to follow Jesus. And the Big Tent Initiative seeks to better represent the diversity of the North American church and model charitable conversation across our differences.

Cory Whitehead, Vice President of Mission Advancement, says, “The campaign commenced a quiet phase of private conversations in 2023. Through the generosity of God and close partners to the ministry, we are deeply humbled that The One Kingdom Campaign already has commitments of over $18.6 million—67 percent of the campaign goal. We have seen full support from the Board of Trustees, new partners who are passionate about the bold vision and direction, and forward-thinking institutional foundations that see the important and enduring voice of CT.”

With the early commitments, many components of The One Kingdom Campaign have already been set into motion. For example, through the Campaign, CT has already:

  • Planted numerous new global editors, native or fluent in the relevant languages and cultures, to elevate the stories of the global Church.
  • Evolved CT’s brand and technology to reach new audiences and generations more effectively, with the recent print magazine and website redesigns.
  • Launched the Next Gen Accelerator, a Fellowship for ages 18-26 that equips the next generation of Christian leaders, storytellers, and artists.
  • Expanded the Public Theology Project, platforming voices that model a healthy Christian engagement with the culture.

Lauren Green McAfee and Bob Doll, Christianity Today Trustees and Campaign Co-Chairs, added, “We see God shaping exciting conversations, important partnerships, and growing audiences through The One Kingdom Campaign and its three initiatives. We see progress already, and we want to nurture and support what God is already doing so this campaign might advance the kingdom of God.”

More information about The One Kingdom vision—what it includes and how to partner—is available at OneKingdom.ChristianityToday.com.

Mitali Perkins signs contract with IVP Kids

September 9, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

September 2024 | LISLE, IL— A prolific and honored author of books for young readers, Mitali Perkins has signed a contract with IVP Kids for the Spring 2026 release of her book tentatively titled Big Changes, Fresh Starts: Praying the Beatitudes with Jesus.

Perkins is known for a long list of titles written for young readers, including You Bring the Distant Near (nominated for a National Book Award) and Rickshaw Girl (adapted into a film by Sleeperwave Productions), all of which explore crossing different kinds of borders. Her goal is to make readers laugh or cry, preferably both, as long as their hearts are widening.

Perkins says, “By the time I was 11, I’d lived in Ghana, Cameroon, London, New York and Mexico before settling in California just in time for middle school. Yep, I was the new kid again, in seventh grade, the year everybody barely makes it through.

”My biggest lifeline during those early years was story. Books were my rock, my stability, my safe place as I navigated the border between California suburbia and the Bengali culture of my traditional home.”

After studying political science at Stanford and public policy at U.C. Berkeley, Perkins taught in middle school, high school, and college. When she began to write fiction, she says, “my protagonists were often—not surprisingly—strong characters crossing all kinds of borders, seeking community, and promoting justice.”

In this first book with IVP Kids, Perkins helps children to pray the Beatitudes in times of change or stress.

Elissa Schauer, IVP Executive Editor and acquisitions editor for Perkins’s project, said, “We’re thrilled to have Mitali Perkins join the IVP Kids family! She’s brought a wonderful message for any child in the midst of the changes and challenges of life, be it a new school or new school year, or simply a new day: God is with us in these moments.”

Perkins was represented by Laura Rennert of Andrea Brown Literary, and this title includes world rights.

New book ‘Soul Care’ by popular faith-forward licensed counselor, podcaster, author, and speaker Debra Fileta reveals the life-giving rhythms Jesus modeled as she helps readers break free from burnout culture and rising anxiety

September 9, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

With over 2.5 million downloads on her popular podcast Talk To Me, as well as with her wide-reaching blog, Debra Fileta, the author of several bestsellers—including Reset—urges those who are weary, burned out from the daily grind, or feeling increasingly anxious about the state of the world to focus on their “soul care” for renewed purpose and a more abundant life.

Relationship counselor Fileta (Reset) offers an energetic invitation for Christians to adopt “rhythms and practices that fuel and feed and strengthen…the deepest parts of who we are.” Fileta persuasively reassures readers that caring for one’s body and mind can be holy…Christians will find plenty of inspiration here.  –Publishers Weekly

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — A recent poll by the American Psychiatric Association reports that anxiety levels are rising year after year, and that 3 in 4 adults in 2024 are dealing with anxiety about the economy or the upcoming presidential election. Not only that, but according to the 2024 Global Talent Trends report, 80 percent of employees are at risk of burnout, and 40 percent blame exhaustion as a contributing factor; yet less than 50 percent of employers integrate well-being into their approach to work. And Christians are not exempt. America’s productivity-obsessed culture – even within the church and ministry environments – is wearing people down.

Enter renowned psychotherapist Debra Fileta with her latest book, Soul Care: Find Life-Giving Rhythms, Live Restored, Avoid Burnout, and Discover Unspeakable Joy (9/3/24, Harvest House). This biblically oriented title is a salve for stressed-out readers that focuses on acknowledging physical and emotional needs and tending to our overall well-being for a wiser and better-balanced way of life.

Fileta, a licensed professional counselor and author of four previous bestselling books, is a sought-after voice on mental and emotional health, relationships, identity, and personal development. Concerned with the pace at which people are living, she explains, “No matter what kind of person you are, we all have an emotional tank that needs filling. We all have an emotional capacity that we need to be acutely aware of in order to avoid burnout, depression, anxiety, and significant emotional crisis. We all have a responsibility to stay filled in order to live a peace-filled, thriving, joyful life.” She adds, “We’ve come to live in a place of emptiness rather than fullness. Or maybe, just maybe, we’ve never actually learned how to fill up. We’ve never learned how to truly care for our souls.”

Within the pages of this book, Fileta discusses six highly applicable, life-giving rhythms reflected in the life of Jesus that readers can integrate into their daily routines to reinvigorate their physical and spiritual health:

  • Nourish
  • Rest
  • Connect
  • Protect
  • Savor
  • Tune In

Along the way, she helps those who are running on empty to stop, observe, and adjust their actions, their motivations, and their mindset.

Combining her clinical and relational expertise with personal anecdotes, Fileta compassionately guides readers in filling up at soul level and regaining the balance they’ve lost. Her application of scriptural principles and examples establishes the tried-and-true value of these actions. And her ability to both translate powerful concepts and her knowledge into practical action steps gives her readers a strong handhold for understanding their internal world and taking wiser steps to care for themselves from the inside out.

In one chapter titled “It Might Not Be a Demon,” she recalls waking up one morning with an unexplained, elevated heart rate while out of town on a ministry trip. Some Christians would automatically attribute this to a spiritual attack; however, Fileta realized that part of the issue was simply that she was dehydrated. “I believe in spiritual warfare.” she says “But sometimes we overspiritualize our situation instead of seeing our role and responsibility in it…We can protect our spirits by putting on the full armor of God, and we can also protect our bodies by being alert and taking care of ourselves in the best ways we can.”

Soul Care will find an audience among the many who have experienced (or are experiencing) emptiness, exhaustion, or who feel off-balance due to the unforgiving pace of modern life—but it’s especially pertinent for people in service roles such as pastors, parents, ministry leaders, youth workers, caregivers, and medical professionals who may find it difficult to carve out time to tend to their own needs. “Jesus understood and honored the limitations of His body. He knew His human body had limits…He was acutely aware of how His body felt,” writes Fileta. “John 4:6 tells us Jesus was wearied by His journey.” This book provides a roadmap for similarly checking in on oneself and making space for one’s soul to thrive.

“Soul Care isn’t just another self-help book,” writes renowned speaker, author, and pastor Tim Timberlake. “It’s a lifeline, an invitation to rediscover the rhythms that make you whole and connected to your most authentic self. It’s a call to embrace the wisdom of the ages and integrate it into your modern, fast-paced life. It explores the delicate balance between the spiritual and the physical, the profound and the practical, and the eternal and the everyday.”

Readers who are overstimulated, overwhelmed, and overscheduled will find practical guidance for restoring their well-being, backed by clinical psychology and timeless wisdom. They will walk away with:

  • Six biblically based, life-giving rhythms to integrate into their daily routines
  • A multi-page self-assessment for determining their level of “soul health”
  • A sense of hope as they learn to observe their internal world and make positive changes
  • A roadmap for recognizing limits and preventing burnout
  • A path to follow for discovering an authentic, abundant life

“In a world that often emphasizes ‘more’ and ‘faster,’ this book invites you to consider the counterintuitive power of ‘less’ and ‘slower,’” says Timberlake. “It’s a call to reconnect with your true self, embrace the rhythms that nurture your soul, and ultimately experience the peace and fulfillment that come from aligning your physical and spiritual well-being.”

Soul Care: Find Life-Giving Rhythms, Live Restored, Avoid Burnout, and Discover Unspeakable Joy will be available everywhere books are sold on September 3, 2024. Learn more at www.DebraFileta.com. Follow Debra Fileta on social media at @debrafileta on Instagram, on Facebook at True Love Dates, and @debrafileta on Threads, and Talk to Me: The Debra Fileta Podcast.

DEBRA FILETA (MA, LPC) is a licensed professional counselor, national speaker, and the founder of the Debra Fileta Counselors Network. She is also the author of numerous bestselling books including Are You Really OK? and Reset. Through her popular blog (TrueLoveDates.com) and her hotline-style podcast, she shares the message that healthy people make healthy relationships. Debra and her husband, John, have been happily married for 17 years and have four amazing children.

Concordia releases new book by Gene Edward Veith Jr. on the Lutheran Church

September 9, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

Discover the History of Your Church Family in Gene Edward Veith Jr.’s New Book, Embracing Your Lutheran Identity

Author Gene Edward Veith Jr. uses inspiring stories and characters from church history to reveal what Lutheran identity means today.

Writing not as a scholar, pundit, or apologist but as a teacher, author Gene Edward Veith Jr. guides readers through the Holy Spirit’s work from the early church and into Lutheranism today in his new book, Embracing Your Lutheran Identity. Using engaging accounts, modern parallels, and thought-provoking questions, Veith teaches readers about key people in the history of Lutheranism to show modern Lutherans the reason behind their pillars of faith.

“It is my impression that many Lutherans, including both recent confirmands and lifelong churchgoers, do not know all that much about their church and why it is worth suffering for, dying for, and living for,” writes Veith. “They don’t know their own heritage and why it is so precious. The essence of Lutheranism, of course, is its theology. . . . In this study, we will focus on your Lutheran identity. That is, we will try to help you identify with Christians through the centuries and throughout the world who share your faith and your confession.”

Veith invites readers, individually or as a group, to discover (or rediscover) their heritage from whence they came—persecutions, martyrdoms, villains, battles, heroes, lore, and all. Through each chapter of the Bible study, Veith encourages readers to delve into identity as a part of God’s family and connect with their “family history” as Lutherans.

“Gene Veith has done it again,” says Gregory P. Seltz, executive director of the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty and speaker emeritus of The Lutheran Hour. “He weaves theology, history, and sociology together in the compelling story of being a Lutheran Christian. . . . Don’t just read this book; identify with it, find your place in it, and you will be blessed.”

Visit cph.org for more information. Contact Erica Sontag to schedule an interview with the author.

He is the author of twenty-seven books, including Authentic Christianity: How Lutheran Theology Speaks to a Postmodern World; Christianity in an Age of Terrorism, and God at Work. He has a PhD from the University of Kansas and currently lives in St. Louis with his wife, Jackquelyn. He has three grown children and twelve grandchildren.

Praise for Embracing Your Lutheran Identity

If you’ve been looking for an accessible book on the Christian Church down through history, here’s what you’ve been waiting for. Filled with thoughtful questions for reflection and discussion, this book covers everything from apostolic times to our own complex era. In robust colloquial language, Dr. Veith unravels the complex story of the Lutheran Church—warts and blemishes included. Woven throughout is the faith once delivered to the saints, rooted solidly in God’s enduring Word.
—Harold L. Senkbeil, author of The Care of Souls

What I’ve gathered is that most Christians know things about Christianity but are disconnected from the time line of the faith they’ve inherited, even among our confessional community, causing many to muddy the meaning of what it is to be a believer. This leaves numerous individuals devoid of knowledge and awareness of the care God has generously poured over His church throughout the ages. Gene Veith closes those gaps and fills the mind and heart with the Holy Spirit’s highlight reel. By relaying some of the most special moments of church history, Veith’s words will inspire the reader and ignite an imagination for good works in the world as unto our Lord Jesus Christ—works worth modeling from important times in the past.
—FLAME, GRAMMY®-nominated and Stellar Award–winning hip hop artist; author of Extra Nos: Discovering Grace outside Myself

Knowing what you would die for reveals what you are living for. Veith builds up our identity in Christ Jesus by exploring the common community, history, and beliefs of Lutherans. Embracing Your Lutheran Identity will bolster your identity in Jesus, a faith that is worth living for—and even dying for.
—Rev. Dr. A. Trevor Sutton, senior pastor, St. Luke Lutheran Church, Lansing, Michigan; coauthor of Authentic Christianity: How Lutheran Theology Speaks to a Postmodern World

Gene Veith provides a lively overview of the legacy that Lutherans have, starting with the apostles and culminating in contemporary confessors. Veith reminds us that the Lutheran Church did not start with Martin Luther in the sixteenth century but embraces a heritage going back to the first century. Veith demonstrates how Luther and his coworkers were born into a church deformed by false teachings that deflected attention from Christ alone, directing sinners to their own works and piety. Luther sought to reform that which had become deformed. The result was a lively confession of the Gospel that would ring out around the globe and is still going on today. Whether through individual reading or group study, Lutherans will be enlightened regarding their heritage, and non-Lutherans will find this book is an accessible introduction to this church.
—John T. Pless, assistant professor of pastoral ministry and mission, Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne

As Dr. Veith’s readers have come to expect, this book is both understandable and substantive. With clarity and context, the text leads the reader on a broad, historic journey to strengthen a highly personal appreciation of the Christian faith. Topical sections, questions to ponder, and recommendations for further reading make this book perfectly suited for both group discussions and individual study.
—Cheryl Swope, MEd; author of Simply Classical: A Beautiful Education for Any Child; coauthor of Eternal Treasures: Teaching Your Child at Home; creator of the Simply Classical Curriculum for Special Needs

Gene Veith has done it again. He weaves theology, history, and sociology together in the compelling story of being a Lutheran Christian. By showing the roots of our identity and the history of where we have been, Veith prepares the modern Lutheran believer to face the challenges of the world of today. For those who know the power of Scripture alone, grace alone, faith alone, be blessed with how it has sustained a particular people for particular times all around the globe. Don’t just read this book; identify with it, find your place in it, and you will be blessed.
—Rev. Dr. Gregory P. Seltz, executive director, Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty; speaker emeritus of The Lutheran Hour

The We Love Christian Music Awards Unveils Powerhouse Partnerships as Future Ambitions Soar

Frontgate MediaNashville, TN – The WE LOVE CHRISTIAN MUSIC AWARDS (www.WeLoveAwards.com), powered by the largest Christian music site online, NewReleaseToday (www.NewReleaseToday.com), is gearing up for its 13th annual celebration this December 2024, and it’s bigger than ever. With new strategic partnerships in place, the awards are set to reach unprecedented heights, promising unparalleled exposure and engagement for sponsors.

Since its inception in 2012, the WE LOVE CHRISTIAN MUSIC AWARDS has been the premier platform celebrating the most inspiring artists, albums, and songs that define the entire Christian music landscape–from both signed and independent artists. What makes this event unique is that the power lies in the hands of the fans, who cast their votes to determine the winners. The awards culminate in a vibrant winner’s special, packed with unforgettable performances, interactive segments, and surprise appearances.

This year, the awards are thrilled to announce a game-changing partnership with FrontGate Media (www.FrontGateMedia.com). As a leading full-service agency representing top faith-based entertainment and media companies, FrontGate Media will spearhead sponsorship representation, collaborating with nonprofits, organizations, book publishers, film studios, and beyond to bring the expanded vision of the awards to life.

Additionally, Frankland Events has come on board to produce a highly anticipated live event in Franklin, TN, set for April 2025. This partnership promises to bring the awards to life, creating an immersive and memorable experience for Christian music fans.

Together, these partnerships position the WE LOVE CHRISTIAN MUSIC AWARDS to deliver over 3 million digital impressions, offering sponsors unmatched visibility across a multi-phase campaign that includes public voting, a live-to-tape ceremony, and a wide-reaching public rollout. From in-program messaging and red-carpet sponsorships to event partnerships and multimedia visibility, the opportunities to engage with this event are endless.

“The WE LOVE AWARDS has been more than just an event; it’s a mission,” shares founder Kevin McNeese. “We’re only scratching the surface of what’s possible. With God’s guidance, we’re expanding our vision to ensure that this life-changing music reaches even more people. We’re humbled and excited to see how these partnerships will help us take the WE LOVE AWARDS to new heights.”
