Faith Words releases ‘I Bet You Think This Book Is About You’ by Chad Veach on October 15, 2024

October 14, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

The pastor and founder of Zoe Church reveals the Church’s role in the rising levels of narcissism today and the Bible’s countercultural call to humility.

Popular author, speaker, and pastor of Zoe Church in Los Angeles, Chad Veach tackles one of the Christian’s greatest foes: an obsession with self. Ego often sneaks up on us in varying forms of narcissism, subtly turning so much of our attention to our needs and desires that we fail to recognize other people’s.

A self-proclaimed recovering narcissist, Veach has learned the power of humility. He wants to destigmatize the humility journey by normalizing the need for regular ego checks. A quick reset in attitude in any situation will create a delicate balance between self-denial and self-absorption.

Amongst the alarming and increasing levels of narcissism in society and the Christian church today, Veach delivers a passionate call for making a simple but fundamental shift in perspective that cultivates humility

Chad Veach is the founder and lead pastor of Zoe Church, a dynamic community in the heart of Los Angeles, California. An international speaker and preacher, he has dedicated his life to the ministry of the Gospel. He is the author of Help! I Work With People,Faith Forward Future, Worried About Everything Because I Pray About Nothing, Unreasonable Hope, and I Bet You Think This Book Is About You, and is the host of Leadership Lean In, a top-charting leadership podcast. Chad and his wife, Julia, reside in Los Angeles with their four children, Georgia, Winston, Maverick, and Clive.

IVP Kids ‘Birth of the Chosen One’ and ‘Zion Learns to See’ receive 2024 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards

October 14, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

October 2024 | LISLE, IL—IVP Kids is pleased to announce that Birth of the Chosen One and Zion Learns to See are 2024 Moonbeam Award medalists. Winners were announced in over forty categories for titles published from 2022 to 2024.

Birth of the Chosen One: A First Nations Retelling of the Christmas Story, written by Terry M. Wildman, received second place in the holiday category. This children’s picture book narrates the birth of Jesus in the tradition of Native oral storytellers and features Native American art by sisters Hannah and Holly Buchanan.

“This artful retelling captures the wonder of the birth that changed human history. We commonly read the nativity story with mental pictures shaped by Western culture and traditions. What a joy, then, to read the story afresh through First Nations eyes!” said L. Daniel Hawk, professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Ashland Theological Seminary.

Birth of the Chosen One features text from the bestselling First Nations Version, a New Testament in English by Native North Americans.

Zion Learns to See: Opening Our Eyes to Homelessness received first place in the social activism category. Coauthored by Terence and Zion Lester and illustrated by Subi Bosa, Zion Learns to See is inspired by real-life events. Zion joins her dad at his work at the community center one day and learns about people experiencing homelessness. Her new understanding fuels her to action and she initiates a campaign with her classmates.

“My parents have always taught me that we love our neighbors as ourselves and we put God first,” said Zion Lester. “In my view, loving others is an act of service, and serving is crucial because it extends God’s love to others and treats people with dignity, affirming their worth regardless of their circumstances.”

“The core message of our book,” said Terence Lester, “is that age is no barrier to service.”

The Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards are intended to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators. Moonbeam Award winners will be honored at an award ceremony held on November 9, in conjunction with the annual Traverse City Children’s Book Festival.

B&H Academic and Appollos announce new partnership for established series

October 14, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

Brentwood, Tenn. – (October 14, 2024) B&H Academic is proud to announce its partnership with Apollos as their new North American publisher for the New Studies in Biblical Theology series.

This well-established series, edited by D.A. Carson and Benjamin L. Gladd, contains 60 volumes released between 1995 and 2024. Beginning in 2025, B&H Academic will serve as the publisher in the United States and Canada, while Apollos will remain the series’ publisher throughout the rest of the world. The similar visions of both B&H Academic and Apollos to strengthen the church through biblically sound resources form the backbone of this partnership.

“The New Studies in Biblical Theology is one of the most recognizable series in biblical studies, widely respected for its excellence and its fruitful contribution to biblical understanding,” said Madison Trammel, publisher of B&H Academic. “So many pastors, students, and scholars have benefited from its exploration of biblical books and themes. The B&H Academic team is honored to be entrusted with the NSBT series in North America, and we look forward to partnering with Apollos in relaunching it for its next 30 years of faithful study in service to the church.”

The New Studies in Biblical Theology series addresses key issues in the discipline of biblical theology for instruction and edification, but ultimately as a creative attempt to help Christians understand better:

  • the nature and status of biblical theology, including its relationship to other disciplines
  • the articulation and exposition of the structure of thought from a particular biblical writer or text
  • the delineation of a biblical theme across the biblical corpus

Thomas Creedy, Publishing Director for Apollos, said:

“I’m delighted to be partnering with B&H Academic for the next phase of the NSBT. We are so grateful to our friends at IVP Academic for sharing in the ministry of NSBT to date, but we are excited to see how B&H Academic will expand the series reach, broaden the author base, and help the church continue to dig deep into the glorious riches of Scripture”

Series editors Carson and Gladd said:

“Working on the NSBT series has been a profound gift from God, and we pray for the increase in its readership and influence with this new partnership with B&H Academic. We are glad to see the continued interest and passion for the series from American pastors in particular.”

B&H Academic looks forward to the Evangelical Theological Society annual meeting in November, where they will announce which titles will be released in 2025. For inquiries regarding publicity, email Dakota Rice (dakota.rice@lifeway.com).

For inquiries to an editor, email Kristen Padilla (kristen.padilla@lifeway.com) or Tom Creedy (tcreedy@ivpbooks.com).

B&H Academic is an imprint of the B&H Publishing Group, a ministry of Lifeway Christian Resources. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter/X: @BHAcademic.

Apollos is an imprint of Inter-Varsity Press (UK), a publisher based in London, UK. Founded as part of UCCF in 1928, we are now part of the SPCK Group. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter/X.

NSBT New USA Publisher FAQ

The New Studies in Biblical Theology series [NSBT] has been in print and published by Apollos, an imprint of Inter-Varsity Press (London, UK) since the early 1990s. In 2025, the Series will switch American publisher from IVP Academic (an imprint of InterVarsity Press, Illinois) to B&H Academic (an imprint of B&H Publishing Group, based in Nashville). As this represents a change of distribution and has some practical implications, the publishers have compiled this FAQ to assist readers, booksellers, librarians, and prospective authors.

Who Publishes the NSBT Series?

The series originates with Apollos, an imprint of Inter-Varsity Press in the United Kingdom. Inter-Varsity Press, founded in 1928, originally licensed the North American rights to the NSBT series to Eerdmans, before shifting to InterVarsity Press USA. Early volumes may be found in an alternative cover!

Apollos continues to originate and publish the NSBT worldwide, but North American marketing, sales and distribution will now be through B&H Academic.

Why is this happening?

As the series approached its 30th Birthday, a number of publishers expressed interest in licensing the NSBT series in North America. B&H Academic made the strongest offer in terms of editorial fit, promotional activity, and other factors – this is no reflection on the good work that IVP Academic has done for NSBT in the past couple of decades, but merely reflects a renewed vision and impetus for the series.

What will happen to the ‘backlist’ NSBT titles?

Volumes 1-63 (Possessed by God through to Answering the Psalmist’s Perplexity) will remain available through IVP Academic in North America, and Apollos/IVP throughout the rest of the world.

Should a volume go to a second edition, that new edition would be with B&H Academic in North America.

Who should I talk to about a prospective NSBT Volume?

The first port of call should be D. A. Carson and Benjamin L. Gladd, the NSBT Series editors. You can also contact Thomas Creedy, IVP Publishing Director; Joshua Wells, IVP Senior Commissioning Editor; or Kristen Padilla at B&H Academic for an initial conversation. Both Joshua and Kristen will be at ETS/IBR/SBL in San Diego for 2024, and willing to meet to discuss possible NSBT volumes.

The series is peer-reviewed and highly selective.

Where should I request a desk/exam/review copy of a forthcoming NSBT Volume?

If you are in North America, contact Dakota Rice with B&H Academic: dakota.rice@lifeway.com
If you are in the UK or the rest of the world, please contact IVP/Apollos: ivp@ivpbooks.com

Who should I contact regarding possible non-English translation of an NSBT Volume?

The series originates with Inter-Varsity Press in the United Kingdom, so please contact ivp@ivpbooks.com. The series has volumes in a number of languages, both in print and in production, and we are always keen to see the series reach expand.

Focus on the Family to release updated and expanded edition of “Feeding the Mouth That Bites You” by psychologist Kenneth Wilgus

October 7, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

Carol Stream, IL—Parenting teenagers is hard. How can parents and other caregivers know whether they’re doing it right? That’s the question that Dr. Kenneth Wilgus, a licensed psychologist who specializes in the treatment of adolescents and their families, aims to answer in his book, Feeding the Mouth That Bites You.

Many parents struggle in raising their teens because they fail to transition from seeing them as children to seeing them as adults-in-training. Progressively giving teens more control over their lives reduces stress and prepares your teen for maturity as an adult. And in the updated and expanded edition of Feeding the Mouth That Bites You, releasing this fall from Focus on the Family in alliance with Tyndale House Publishers, Dr. Wilgus outlines a clear path to help adults parent teens in today’s world.

Engaging, accessible, and based on Dr. Wilgus’ thirty-five years of clinical family work, teaching on parenting, and successful raising of three teens of his own, this guide is immensely practical. It will help parents learn what teens need and why they act the way they do so that parents can reduce their frustrations and thoughtfully guide their teens. Feeding the Mouth That Bites You will also help parents discover how to

  • help adolescents grow in responsibility and prepare them to launch into the real world;
  • reduce conflict and maintain good communication;
  • set clear, reasonable limits without provoking fights; and
  • manage issues like school, alcohol use, dating, and more!

Featuring stories, examples, charts, and a discussion guide, the updated and expanded edition of Feeding the Mouth That Bites You—which releases on November 5—is an indispensable resource that will give parents the confidence to raise teens who are ready for adulthood.
