Crossway launches initiative to distribute 1 million Bibles to Christians in the Global South

November 14, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

WHEATON, Ill.—Crossway is pleased to announce the launch of an initiative with the goal of distributing one million English Standard Version (ESV) Bibles around the world. These Bibles will be provided to Christians in places of great need with distribution beginning in 2023.

While Bibles are easily accessible in the Western world, the same cannot be said about other places around the globe. An estimated 11 million church leaders in the Global South (Africa, Latin America, and Asia) lack access to proper biblical training and resources.[1]  Further, many communities do not have the infrastructure—or market—available to sustain the long-term distribution of Bibles at locally affordable prices.

By partnering with churches, ministry networks, and other organizations in the Global South, Crossway’s goal is to provide a personal copy of the Word of God to 1 million Christians who might otherwise not have access to their own Bibles.

“God’s Word is the most important treasure we could give,” says Randy Jahns, Crossway’s senior vice president of global ministry. “Our prayer is that each Bible provided will help a Christian grow in his or her faith and be equipped to teach and lead others. We pray that churches and families will be blessed and strengthened, for God’s glory alone.”

In the first phase of this ambitious project, Crossway is seeking to raise $500,000 by December 31, 2022, in order to distribute the first 100,000 Bibles to Christians in the Global South.

More information can be found at crossway.org/OneMillionBibles.

Founded in 1938, Crossway is a not-for-profit global Christian publishing ministry that publishes gospel-centered, Bible-based content to honor our Savior and serve his church. Crossway seeks to help people understand the all-encompassing implications of the gospel and the truth of God’s word—for all of life, for all eternity, and for the glory of God alone. Crossway is the global publisher of the ESV® (English Standard Version®) Bible, more than 1,000 Christian books, and an extensive list of gospel literature. Focus on the Family to release engaging new products for children and teens

November 7, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Carol Stream, Ill. (November 1, 2022) Focus on the Family, in alliance with Tyndale House Publishers, will release five new Focus on the Family products for children and teens in spring 2023. In line with Focus on the Family’s corporate mission, the new products—Otter B Forgiving, Leapin’ Leopards, Buckle Up!, Edge of the Galaxy, and Land of the Lost—invite children and teens on incredible adventures while teaching valuable, faith-filled lessons.

Otter B Forgiving
Otter B #11

Otter B Forgiving is the eleventh in a series of children’s books that teach young children basic biblical values. In this story, Otter B’s friend Roscoe accidentally wrecks Otter B’s new birthday present. Roscoe says he’s sorry, but Otter B is too upset to forgive his friend.

The next day, Otter B is riding bikes with his other friends and accidentally knocks Tabitha off her bike. When Otter B apologizes, Tabitha forgives him right away. Otter B is so relieved that he runs right over to Roscoe’s house. Not only does he forgive Roscoe for damaging his boat, he also asks Roscoe to forgive him for being so upset. When Otter B says his prayers that night, he asks God to bless all of his friends, especially Roscoe. Then he sleeps soundly, thankful that he’s been forgiven too.

Each book in the series ends with a rhyme that reinforces the lesson and includes an appropriate Bible verse.

“When a friend does something wrong and you’re mad as mad can be, saying ‘I forgive you’ helps.
It’s how you Otter Be!” (Ephesians 4:32)

Leapin’ Leopards
Magnificent Mulligans #1

A massive mess, a leopard on the loose, and the arrival of new life—it’s just another day in the life of the Mulligans. From bestselling author Bill Myers comes a hilarious, warmhearted, and action-packed adventure starring the Mulligan family.

Neither Michael nor Traci Mulligan had intended upon a large family, let alone one of such diversity. But God had other plans. After their second child, Lisa, was born blind, they began to see their gift for reaching out, connecting, and laughing with special children with special needs—all while raising their family among the many creatures living at the animal park that they operate.

Are there trials? You bet. There’s no way to keep the boat from rocking with so many children from such diverse backgrounds and in such an incredible environment. But their faith in Christ, commitment to one another, and ability to laugh at themselves keep them digging in to make it work.

Buckle Up!
Adventures in Odyssey #74

Adventures in Odyssey audio dramas release the imaginations of both young and old as listeners follow a host of characters through adventures in the town of Odyssey. Geared toward kids ages 8 and up, these high-quality audio dramas teach biblical truths and moral foundations for children to make decisions from throughout their lives.

Lower the lap bar and buckle your seat belt. There’s a wild ride ahead for everyone in Odyssey!

Renee and Horus have a scientific breakthrough of monumental proportions. But there’s a catch: the technology is based on Mr. Whittaker’s Imagination Station, and he didn’t give them permission to use it! Will Renee risk her friendship with Whit in the name of science? Meanwhile, Olivia gives her testimony at church, and big questions are raised that she can’t answer. Elsewhere in town, friendships are at stake when Buck and Jules hit a rough patch that could endanger theirs, Morrie and Suzu try to find a healthy path toward making new friends, and Wooton faces a courtroom struggle that may pit him against an old friend.

It’s a time of next steps—both forward and backward—as the folks in Odyssey face all sorts of twists and turns. Keep your hands and arms inside the car at all times and Buckle Up!

Edge of the Galaxy
30 Faith-Filled Adventures

Edge of the Galaxy combines action-packed science fiction with faith-filled lessons that readers can apply to their own lives. It is a unique science-fiction devotional where you follow the exciting exploits of Gavin and his family through Gavin’s star log entries. There are beautiful color illustrations throughout the book that bring this interplanetary adventure to life!

The year is 2095, and 12-year-old Gavin Greystone is on the space station Provider above the Saturn moon of Titan. Gavin and his family work and live as space explorers. Life in space is certainly not easy, or even all that safe, but it’s definitely an exciting adventure. From Provider, Gavin’s family will work with other families to create a life on the surface of Titan as they expand humankind’s footprint and prepare for more settlers. Through many trials, Gavin will learn who he is and the plan God has for him.

Land of the Lost
Imagination Station #30

Over 1 million have sold in the series! When kids step into the Imagination Station, they travel back in time and across the world with cousins Patrick and Beth. Each book is historically accurate, and readers will grow in their faith and knowledge of big historical events as they race through each unforgettable story.

Lions and tigers and . . . oh my, are those . . . giants? Cousins Patrick and Beth knew their next adventure in Mr. Whittaker’s Imagination Station was going to be epic, but this one may be their biggest one yet. They’re off to meet one of the most famous families in the Bible—Noah, his wife, and their sons! Can Patrick and Beth help Noah’s family round up the different animals before the rain starts falling?

iDisciple announces book release from Crisis Aid International president

November 7, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

ALPHARETTA, Ga., Nov. 1, 2022 — iDisciple Publishing is pleased to announce the release of its latest book, “Born for Rescue,” by President of Crisis Aid International, Pat Bradley. Crisis Aid, an organization that shows up in “no-go zones” where starvation, disease, and danger are a part of everyday life, has provided millions of pounds of food to adults and malnourished children around the world. Bradley’s book honestly and compassionately shares the miracles that occur when Jesus followers believe that doing nothing is no longer an option. 100% of Bradley’s royalties will go to Crisis Aid International.

“There are consequences for doing something, but there are also consequences for doing nothing,” said Bradley.

“Born for Rescue” chronicles the harrowing stories of tragedy and restoration across multiple continents told from the perspective of Bradley, a self-proclaimed normal guy—a formerly divorced, recovering alcoholic who worked at an ad agency. Inspiring stories range from sex slaves liberated in the red-light districts of East Africa to secret meetings with the FBI. From warlords bearing AK-47s to waylaid survivors of tsunamis and earthquakes. From innovative new methods to combat the global hunger crisis to imaginative, courageous women breaking free from the cycles of trafficking and abuse.

“It has been our privilege at Giving Company and iDisciple Publishing not simply to publish these stories in ‘Born for Rescue,'” said David Henriksen, CEO of Giving Company, “but to become a partner in Crisis Aid’s journey of meeting the needs of some of the world’s most vulnerable. It is my sincere hope and prayer that you will be touched and motivated by the words you encounter here.”

“Born for Rescue” releases today on Amazon and Christianbook.

Thomas Nelson announces “The NET Study Bible” edited by David Dockery, PhD

November 7, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 2022 — Thomas Nelson, a division of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, in partnership with Bible.org/Biblical Studies Press announces The NET Study Bible, the first translation-based study Bible created for the New English Translation (NET).  Slated for release in 2027, David Dockery, PhD, Interim President, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, will helm the project as general editor. It will contain more than 750,000 words of in-depth study material.

“I am genuinely excited about the prospects for The NET Study Bible project. This wonderful resource will serve new believers, small group leaders, laypersons interested in the serious study of Scripture, pastors, and church leaders,” Dockery states. “I am truly grateful for the remarkable group of scholars and practitioners who have been assembled as contributors for this effort. What a joy it is to work closely with Philip Nation, Scott Duvall, Danny Hays and others on this important project.”

Widely known for its transparency, no other translation is so openly accountable to the worldwide church or has been so thoroughly vetted. Throughout the New English Translation’s uniquely transparent translation process, every working draft was made publicly available on the internet. Scholars, ministers, and laypersons from around the world logged millions of review sessions. Then the NET Translation Committee — comprised of over 25 of the world’s leading biblical language scholars– filtered every question and suggestion through the very best in linguistics, textual criticism, and their unwavering commitment to following the text wherever it led. The result was then crystallized into more than 62,000 translator notes highlighting every major decision, alternative view, and difficult choice. The NET version of Scripture is hailed as accurate and readable; while offering full access to the translators’ choices through the extensive notes.

“We are honored to have Dr. Dockery lead this work. He is well-known for his deep contributions to the theological community and his work on study Bible editions. He was my first choice to serve as general editor and I’m thrilled to work with him on this project,” said Vice President and Publisher of Bibles for Thomas Nelson, Philip Nation, Dmin. “Adding The NET Study Bible to our offerings is historically-significant and will bolster it’s place as a preferred version for modern Bible readers.”

Thomas Nelson began commercially publishing NET editions in 2019. Learn more about the New English Translation.

Tyndale House Publishers to launch Tyndale Elevate, new imprint focusing on Christian worldview and apologetics

October 31, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (October 27, 2022)—Tyndale House Publishers announced today their impending 2023 launch of Tyndale Elevate, a new imprint focused on expanding its catalog of books that address Christian worldview topics and apologetics. The imprint’s “ask. seek. find.” tagline reflects Tyndale Elevate’s dedication to elevating the conversation around what matters most and helping people explore the issues, assumptions, and worldviews behind pressing challenges to the Christian faith in the twenty-first century.

Tyndale Elevate authors are committed to understanding the spirit of our times and how the perennial wisdom of the Scriptures can free and empower people to be who God created them to be. Their focus will be to provide content rooted in the timeless wisdom of biblical and historic Christianity, with a passion to empower and encourage believers. Their collective goal will be to equip Christians with a wide range of resources to build vibrant communities of faith focused on helping people see and experience God at work in their lives.

Tyndale Elevate will feature authors who

  • examine questions about—and challenges to—the Christian faith,
  • offer a convenient and easy on-ramp to a deeper and more fruitful study of Scripture,
  • explore and explain various worldviews and the unique coherence of the Christian worldview,
  • equip and energize leaders within local churches,
  • revitalize apologetics for the twenty-first century, and
  • inspire and encourage believers to join God’s work within their own communities.

Regarding this new imprint, Jon Farrar, nonfiction acquisitions director, shared that over the past year, Tyndale House Publishers has seen a sharp increase in interest in books focused on worldview topics, with prominent releases of Another Gospel? and Live Your Truth and Other Lies by Alisa Childers, as well as Sean McDowell’s A Rebel’s Manifesto and Guillaume Bignon’s Confessions of a French Atheist.

In 2023, Tyndale will add Justin Brierley, the host of the Unbelievable? radio show and podcast, to the Tyndale Elevate line with his seminal book The Surprising Rebirth of Belief of God. Brierley’s book will explore how secular thought leaders are rediscovering how crucial the Christian worldview is for our society. The imprint has also partnered with Preston Perry, who hosts a popular YouTube apologetics channel, on his upcoming debut book.

Commenting on the new imprint, Sarah Atkinson, vice president and publisher of Tyndale Books, said, “With the success of the Tyndale Refresh and Tyndale Momentum imprints, our team is now energized to introduce Tyndale Elevate, continuing our strong pattern of success in publishing thoughtful, discerning books that equip the church to have meaningful conversations. I’m excited to see the launch of Tyndale Elevate and the publishing vision it represents.”

Tyndale Elevate expects to release six titles a year. Books addressing Christian worldview topics and apologetics that were previously published under Tyndale Momentum, including titles by popular authors such as Sean McDowell, Alister McGrath, and Mark Mittelberg, will be rebranded with Tyndale Elevate when they are reprinted.

“The Celebration Place” from IVP Kids receives 2022 Jerry Pinkney Children’s Book Award

October 31, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

WESTMONT, IL—IVP Kids is pleased to announce that The Celebration Place by Dorena Williamson was selected as the winner of the 2022 Jerry Pinkney Children’s Book Award in the Religious/Faith category.

The Jerry Pinkney Children’s Book Awards are sponsored by the National Black Book Festival (NBBF) and were established in honor of the late Jerry Pinkney, a world-renowned children’s book illustrator. Nominated titles for the award must be copyrighted in 2021 or 2022 and be either written by an African American author or have an African American theme.

Williamson said, “Jerry Pinkney was a familiar name when I curated representation for my young children. His work is a legacy of diverse children’s literature and an example to follow. This award is an incredible honor as we approach the one-year anniversary of the release of The Celebration Place.”

Written by Williamson and illustrated by Erin Bennett Banks, The Celebration Place: God’s Plan for a Delightfully Diverse Church is told in a delightful rhyme. This colorfully illustrated children’s book also includes tools to help parents engage in conversation about the book’s theme of God’s vision for justice and unity.

“We were so pleased to sign Dorena as one of our first acquisitions for IVP Kids because The Celebration Place casts such a beautiful vision for the church as a community of inclusion and celebration,” said IVP Kids editor Elissa Schauer. “But it was also significant to us that Dorena incorporated Dr. King’s message of justice and unity, pointing out that the dream that Dr. King preached is simply what God intended for the church. I can’t think of a more profound message for us today!”

Natalie Grant, singer, songwriter, and cofounder of Hope for Justice, said, “Dorena has such a beautiful yet compelling way of writing about these most important topics of justice and unity. Yes, The Celebration Place will inspire children to walk this message out better than the generation before them did. But I also believe it will help challenge the parents, teachers, and leaders of these children that it’s not too late to do the same.”

The award winners in each category were announced on October 22 at the 2022 National Black Book Festival in Houston. More information about the Jerry Pinkney Children’s Book Awards is available at www.jerrypinkneybookawards.com.

(October 28, 2022) – NavPress announced today that on October 3, Trevor Hudson, author of numerous books, including his most recent Seeking God: Finding Another Kind of Life with St. Ignatius and Dallas Willard, was presented with the inaugural Richard J. Foster award in Spiritual Formation. Foster, author of the seminal bestseller A Celebration of Discipline, traveled to George Fox University to present the award to Hudson.

Hudson, a Methodist minister and spiritual director, traveled from his home in South Africa to Portland, Oregon, to receive the award. Hudson frequently visits the United States as a lecturer at Fuller Seminary and a speaker and trainer in spiritual formation.

The Foster Award is presented to people “whose intellectual and practical work helps others come into an ongoing transformational relationship with Jesus Christ,” according to George Fox University. Hudson’s long career is a manifestation of that value. He has published more than twenty books, with Seeking God having been released by NavPress in September. It served as the opening book in this year’s annual book club hosted by Renovare, a ministry of spiritual formation founded by Foster. Hudson has recently signed an agreement with NavPress to be the North American publisher of his follow-up book on discernment.

“Trevor’s Pauses for Lent was my devotional reading in the weeks before Easter this year,” said NavPress publisher David Zimmerman. “He characterizes the fruit of the Spirit in his writing and his relational presence alike—loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, and on and on. It’s no surprise to me that Trevor would be honored with an award like this.”

“I am thrilled to see Trevor being honored in this way,” said Deborah Saenz Gonzalez, editor of Seeking God. “It is a testament to his life’s work and ministry. Very well deserved.”

Seeking God has a companion video discussion guide created by Conversatio Divina, made available through the Martin Institute for Spiritual Formation at Westmont College.
