Focus on the Family to release engaging new children’s products, teaching kids to be grateful and brave even in hard times

October 10, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Carol Stream, Ill. (October 3, 2022) Focus on the Family, in alliance with Tyndale House Publishers, will release three new Focus on the Family children’s products this fall. In line with Focus on the Family’s corporate mission, the new products—Otter B Thankful, 28 Hours, and Sled Run for Survival—will equip parents to teach their children about having a brave and grateful faith even in the midst of hardship.

Otter B Thankful
Otter B #10

Otter B Thankful is the tenth in a series of children’s books that teach young children basic biblical character traits.

In Thankful, Otter B’s friend Franklin takes a trip to the Race Car Museum, and Tabitha gets a new scooter—but instead of being happy for them, Otter B is jealous. While Otter B is feeling sad, Felicia and Roscoe arrive with their Gratitude Jars. Together, they show Otter B all the things they have to be grateful for. Otter B stops feeling sad about the things he wants and learns to be thankful for everything he has.

Each book ends with a rhyme that reinforces the lesson and includes an appropriate Bible verse.

“When you’re sad ’cause you can’t get

the things you want or see,

try giving thanks for what you have.

It’s how you Otter Be!” (drawing from 1 Thessalonians 5:18)

28 Hours
Adventures in Odyssey #73

It’s just another morning in Odyssey—or so it appears. As the sun rises and their phones start ringing, Whit and his friends become entangled in a conspiracy that threatens the future of their town and beyond. The clock is ticking toward an explosive confrontation as the crew from Whit’s End races to solve a heart-pounding mystery in this special, six-part adventure, 28 Hours.

Adventures in Odyssey audio dramas release the imagination of both young and old as listeners follow a host of characters through adventures in the town of Odyssey. Geared toward kids ages 8 and up, these high-quality audio dramas teach biblical truths and moral foundations for children to make decisions from throughout their lives. They are perfect for car rides and for initiating important conversations with kids.

Sled Run for Survival
Imagination Station #29

When the kids step into the Imagination Station, they travel back in time and across the world with cousins Patrick and Beth. Each book is historically accurate, and readers will grow in their faith and knowledge of big historical events as they race through each unforgettable story.

Patrick and Beth knew they’d be facing a danger more fierce than a polar bear or a walrus, but they never thought their opponent would be too small to see.

After arriving in Alaska in the winter of 1925, they discover that a very small enemy—a disease called diphtheria—is sweeping through the town of Nome. Can Patrick help retrieve enough medicine for the children by riding along with Clearsky and his team of sled dogs?

Meanwhile, Beth makes a new friend, Amelia, who wants to prove she can accomplish this mission using an airplane, and she’s not taking no for an answer. But can Amelia safely fly a plane over frigid and stormy Alaska? Will the medicine get to Nome in time?

Zonderkidz book “I’m So Glad You Were Born” by Ainsley Earhardt hits #1 on New York Times Bestseller List

October 10, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Grand Rapids, MI – October 6, 2022 – The Zonderkidz title, I’m So Glad You Were Born authored by FOX & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt received #1 status on the New York Times bestseller list for Children’s Picture Books for the October 16 issue.

The book released September 27, 2022 with Earhardt appearing on numerous FOX programs, doing a full national media tour and personal appearances in several cities around the country such as Nashville, Salt Lake City, and Ponte Vedra, Florida.

“Our team at Zonderkidz is elated about this #1 status for this special book,” says Zonderkidz Vice President and Publisher Megan Dobson. “Ainsley’s heart for sharing this important and needed message with children has shown since our first conversations together, and it’s been amazing to watch this book already reach so many children and their families. We’re so grateful for Ainsley and the teams at FOX and CAA for helping us inspire young lives and get the word out about I’m So Glad You Were Born. We’re excited to keep on sharing this message of love to even more children, celebrating who they are and the plans God has for them.”

Earhardt shared the bestseller news with viewers of FOX & Friends this morning and on her Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjX2IisDHNL/

Dedicated to her daughter Hayden, this book is meant to be shared with children to remind them that they were created to be extraordinary and treasured.

“My mother always told us on our birthdays each year how glad she was that we were born—and now I love saying that to my daughter, Hayden,” said Earhardt, during her book announcement this spring. “This book celebrates all the reasons we are so glad our children are born and how special they are. It reminds children they have a purpose, there’s a plan for their life, that God loves them and they are worthy of having a wonderful life. This book is about noticing the traits that make a child special, and I hope it helps parents, grandparents, and caregivers to slow down and take the time to tell the children in their lives how grateful and appreciative they are for all the special things that make a child who they are.”

Ainsley Earhardt is now the author of four New York Times bestsellers, including three #1 children’s picture book bestsellers as of October 2022. New Growth Press releases two new stories to help children understand their big feelings

October 10, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

New additions to the Good News for Little Hearts help children with feelings of guilt and embarrassment.

The popular Good News for Little Hearts series, a favorite of children and parents alike, has grown again with the addition of two new releases, Henry’s Big Mistake: When You Feel Guilty and Zoe’s Time to Shine: When You Want to Hide (October 3, 2022).

Henry’s Big Mistake: When You Feel Guilty, edited by Lauren Whitman, offers concrete, grace-based help for understanding why we feel guilty and what to do when we feel it. When Halle gets new braces, she has trouble saying some words. This irritates her brother Henry and one day he teases her in front of their friends and really hurts Halle’s feelings. Now Henry has this nagging feeling inside that he can’t make go away. He tries to just be nice to Halle, but that doesn’t help anything. When he learns from Mrs. Bixby about guilt and what God wants us to do after we sin, he gains the courage to make things right with God and with Halle.

Henry’s Big Mistake helps young readers learn that confessing your sins to God is the only way to make guilty feelings go away and stay away. Children will learn alongside Henry Hedgehog how they can go to God for forgiveness and also go to the one they have hurt—instead of trying to be better or covering up their mistakes.

Zoe’s Time to Shine: When You Want to Hide, edited by Edward T. Welch, helps children learn alongside Zoe Mouse how to overcome shame and embarrassment. Zoe Mouse loves to sing. She sings everywhere all the time. There is just one problem—she can’t carry a tune. One day she tries out for the school musical and tells all her friends she will definitely get the lead role. But instead of getting a part, her drama teacher asks her to help with the lighting. Zoe wants to hide! Papa finds her in the closet hiding under her blanket and helps her remember that Jesus is with her and will be her protector and helper when she goes back to school. Zoe learns that when Jesus is near, you don’t have to hide. You can face your friends and shine a light on them.

With Zoe’s Time to Shine, parents and caregivers will be guided in how to talk with their children about hiding and feeling ashamed and how to connect the Bible to their children’s struggles. Children will learn to turn to Jesus and depend on him to cover them with his love and give them the strength to face others after they have experienced embarrassment.

Each of the stories in this series of hardback, full-color books (written for children four to seven years old) focuses on an animal family facing real-life issues. With colorful illustrations by Joe Hox, young readers will be captivated by stories and situations they can identify with. By overcoming each struggle or hardship, the animal characters model hope in Jesus. Published in partnership with the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF), the Good News for Little Hearts series aims to provide grace-based and biblical counsel to families.

Parents and caretakers are encouraged to enter into meaningful conversations with their kids, teaching them to live by faith in the details of everyday life, just like the animals did. After the story, each book contains information for parents on how to use God’s Word to help children apply biblical, gospel-based truths to the specific problem addressed in the book, as well as Scripture to remember in times of trouble. The Bible verses referenced in the book are also available as a tear-out page.

ECPA names 16 industry “Emerging Leaders” for PubU scholarship and mentorship program

October 9, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Emerging Leader scholars will participate in ECPA PubU held November 16-17 in Nashville, and be matched with industry mentor for year-long mentorship

TEMPE, ARIZ., OCTOBER 10, 2022 – ECPA has announced the recipients of the Emerging Leader scholarship and mentorship program for ECPA PubU – the industry’s training and networking event for Christian publishing professionals, taking place November 16-17 at Lipscomb University in Nashville.

Nominations were made by companies in Christian publishing with a goal to invest in the emerging leaders in their organizations. Since 2016, 83 emerging leaders have gone through the program, adding now an additional 16 professionals from 10 companies.

Paloma Lee, Assistant Producer and Project Specialist at InterVarsity Press – and former Emerging Leader scholar – serves on the ECPA PubU Brain Trust as the coordinator of this year’s Emerging Leader program. She will be coordinating the matching of each mentee with an industry mentor.

“This year’s superb class of Emerging Leaders abounds with a broad range of expertise—their influence spans across the Christian publishing industry through areas of operations, marketing, editorial, design, and more,” Lee said. “It’s profoundly encouraging to see the valuable perspectives and the excellence these professionals are already bringing to the Church and the world through their work. As they develop partnerships with industry mentors over the next year, I’m eager to see Emerging Leaders empowered further within their roles as they experience deeper thriving in their publishing journeys.”

Paloma has developed two special sessions for these scholars, presented by industry leaders the morning before PubU opens:

Four Keys for Flourishing in Your Christian Publishing Career with Trillia Newbell (acquisitions director at Moody Publishers, PubU editorial track leader, and bestselling author); Linda Howard (associate publisher of children & youth at Tyndale House and PubU Children’s Book Summit coordinator); and Bob Gaudet (VP of marketing at Zondervan Bibles, co-leading the PubU marketing track)

Making the Most of Your Mentor Relationship with Dr. Christina Edmondson, author, speaker, educator, and co-host of the Truth’s Table podcast

“At our recent C-Suite Symposium in Savannah, Georgia, I clearly heard from industry executives just how much they value ECPA’s contribution to leadership development and mentoring,” ECPA President Jeff Crosby said. “The Emerging Leaders program embedded within PubU is a cornerstone of that work. I’m grateful to Paloma for her coordination of this year’s program, and congratulate each of the Emerging Leader scholars.”

ECPA is pleased to present the 2022 PubU class of Emerging Leader scholars:

Andrea graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Michigan University with a major in Marketing. She was an intern at Baker Publishing Group before starting her current job at Apricot Services. Andrea has a small YouTube channel where she enjoys posting about her trips, recipes, or anything she has time to edit.

Avrie Roberts is a writer and editor. She holds a BA in English and has worked on postgraduate studies in English literature and world religions. She has a wide range of editorial experience working with Christian publishers and ministries, cultivating a love for creating resources that both equip the church and engage the culture. She works at Moody Publishers as their copy editor, where she gets to read books and study theology for a living.

Brandon Bellanti entered the publishing world in 2021 after working in church ministry, music, and libraries. He earned a B.A. in Music from Cedarville University, then served as Minister of Music at Grace Church in White Lake, MI. After moving to Boston in 2017, Brandon completed a M.S. in Library and Information Science at Simmons University and worked as a technical librarian for Akamai Technologies. He joined The Good Book Company as a data analyst in September 2021.

Bunmi Ishola is a Nigerian American, raised in both countries. She has a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, and holds a master’s in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. After working for World Literature Today, The Norman Transcript, The Dallas Morning News, and CURE magazine, Bunmi taught middle school social studies and English. In 2018, she decided to pursue a career focused on one of her biggest passions: books.  She now works as a children’s book editor for Penguin Random House’s Christian publishing group.

Jessica Ludeña Adams joined Tyndale in March 2021 as Associate Marketing Manager. Jessica worked with Tyndale previously as a freelance editor. Prior to joining Tyndale full-time, Jessica was an SEO specialist at a digital marketing company. Jessica is an avid reader and self-proclaimed nerd. Born in the U.S. to a family of Cuban refugees, Jessica is passionate about helping her community, living out her faith, and serving God in her giftedness. She lives in the Chicagoland area with her best friend/husband Joe.

Jonathan Higdon, an editor at the United Methodist Publishing House, is from Nashville, Tennessee. He began working with Cokesbury Kids in 2019 after several years in local church ministry in Tennessee and Texas. He received his B.A. in Communication from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and his M.Div. from Baylor University’s Truett Theological Seminary. Jonathan loves a good em dash—but not as much as he loves traveling with his wife, Sonia, and dog, Reese.

Joyce Perez joined the Bethany House marketing department as an assistant marketing manager in 2022. She graduated with a degree in Communications and Advertising in Brazil and moved to Minnesota shortly after, where she began her family and has lived for the past 15 years. With a background in customer service and freelance marketing, design, and social media consulting, she has enjoyed merging her love of creativity and books with her marketing skills as a part of the Bethany House fiction team.

Karen Savella Stallard is a multimedia copywriter at InterVarsity Press. She has a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Before entering the publishing industry, Karen worked as an immigration lawyer for immigrant survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. She lives in Chicago, IL with her husband, Zach, and her cat, Levin.

Kate Irwin-Lillard is a graphic designer at InterVarsity Press. In 2019, she graduated from Grand Valley State University with a bachelor’s degree in studio arts. As a member of the design team at IVP, Kate works in collaboration with other departments to implement and uphold the visual identity and brand of IVP. Kate lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her husband, Jeffrey. In the wild you can find Kate sporting a snazzy groutfit. She enjoys spicy food, eating a good chocolate chip cookie, and taking pictures of her friends on her (many) disposable cameras.

Linnae Conkel is an editorial assistant for Our Daily Bread Publishing. She contributes to the production of ODBP books by proofreading projects, checking covers, and preparing manuscripts for typesetting. She also has assisted VOICES by translating Spanish content to English, managing contracts, and helping with the editing process of content written for Black and Hispanic audiences. When she’s not working, Linnae is either playing piano or drafting a fantasy novel.

Megan Teegarden, with 15 years of experience in education and ministry, is excited to be working with the Cokesbury Kids publishing team, focusing on both the history and strength of the Cokesbury brand, while also reimagining products and resources that meet the current needs of church leaders and Christian educators. Megan’s work began as a Kindergarten teacher in Birmingham, AL, with faith and ministry always playing an important role in her professional endeavors.

Olivia Eldredge has been with NavPress for four years, serving as the Operations Manager and Bible Products Specialist. Olivia has a BA in Communications with minors in Music and Theology from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. She moved to Colorado with her husband, Luke, in 2017 from Spokane, where she was a worship pastor. Olivia and Luke have been married for six years and love spending time with family; with their dog, Rainier; and in Colorado’s sunny, beautiful wilderness.

Rachel B. Hagewood is the Amplify Engagement Manager at the United Methodist Publishing House. She collaborates with partners in the United Methodist Church to provide resources and support to local congregations, specifically via UMPH’s streaming service, Amplify Media. She also edits various curriculum resources for all ages. A life-long United Methodist, Rachel has a passion for equipping leaders within the church to guide others to a deeper faith through studying scripture and theology.

Sarah Traill is an assistant marketing manager on the Baker Books and Revell nonfiction team at Baker Publishing Group. A West Michigan native, Sarah got her start in the bookselling industry in the hands-on world of retail through customer service and marketing work at the Baker Book House store in Grand Rapids, before moving over to the publishing side to join the trade books marketing team. She is now an assistant marketing manager and contributor to company DEI initiatives.

Selena Cunningham serves as a Cokesbury Kids Team Lead at The United Methodist Publishing House, working with both curriculum and vacation Bible school. For more than ten years, Selena has served the publishing house in a variety of editorial roles, including work with Cokesbury’s Celebrate Wonder, Deep Blue, and Rotation Stations curriculum lines. She has also done editorial work for Discovery on Adventure Island VBS, Food Truck Party VBS, and the upcoming Hero Hotline VBS.

Zach Savella Stallard is an Operations Coordinator with InterVarsity Press. After developing a love for IVP’s books during Wheaton College theology studies, campus ministry, and church planting, he followed his wife Karen to work with IVP in 2021. He loves solving problems and developing systems, and he works with IVP’s print production, hiring, onboarding, and this year’s Urbana conference bookstore. He is proud to work in Christian publishing and with IVP to contribute toward the equipping of the church.

ECPA PubU returns to Lipscomb University in Nashville on November 16-17, after two years of conducting the event online. This year’s program will include more than 30 sessions, 50+ speakers in several training tracks based on publishing discipline: Marketing Track, Editorial Track, Design Track, Production & Operations Track – and a post-event afternoon Children’s Book Summit.

‘Experiencing God Bible’ helps readers recognize God’s voice

September 23, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Over the past three decades, millions of Christians have used “Experiencing God” resources to dive deeper into the Bible. Now, for the first time ever, Christians can discover “Experiencing God” teaching aids directly within the pages of Scripture in the newly released “CSB Experiencing God Bible.”

The latest study Bible to feature the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) translation, the “Experiencing God Bible” features commentary notes and questions for reflection that are based on the bestselling book and Bible study. First published in October 1990 by Lifeway Christian Resources, “Experiencing God” by Henry Blackaby and Claude King promotes a God-centered way of life that helps people know God intimately, recognize His voice and understand His will for their lives. In the past 32 years, “Experiencing God” has become a perennial favorite, selling more than 8 million copies in English and translated into over 75 languages.“

It’s no surprise that the content from the original ‘Experiencing God’ book and Bible study have played a pivotal role in the discipleship of multiple generations of global Christians over the years,” said Andy Mclean, publisher for the Bible and reference team at Lifeway. “We’re thrilled to now offer updated content from Richard Blackaby in the ‘CSB Experiencing God Bible’ so a new generation of Christians can grasp the necessity of hearing from God and understanding His will for their everyday lives.”

The “CSB Experiencing God Bible” features book introductions, prompts for encountering God, biographies of biblical characters and full-color design elements. Perhaps most notable, however, is that each chapter of the Bible is bookended with a set of “prepare to meet God” questions at the beginning and “did you notice?” follow-up questions at the end. This unique feature woven from the first pages of Genesis to the final “amen” in Revelation allows Christians to use this Bible for systematic study through each chapter and book or for a pick-up-and-go study on any section of Scripture.“

The design and structure of this Bible lends itself to be used either individually or within a group setting,” said McLean. “For those who are familiar with the legacy content of ‘Experiencing God’ either in the book or Bible study format, they will find the lessons and principles learned there have been applied across every book of the Bible, helping them expand their engagement and understanding of Scripture.“

Both individual readers and groups will find a structured template as they work their way through the Bible, providing them with added explanatory content and questions to work through, chapter-by-chapter,” said McLean. “And the single-column format provides space in the margin to write so readers can record their answers to these questions either for their own benefit or as they work through them in a group context.”

Reflecting on the legacy of his father’s work on the original “Experiencing God” study, Richard Blackaby said there was no way to know how dramatically the study’s message would be received or how it would spawn a multigenerational movement of people seeking to recognize God’s voice. “My dad always said there is a deep longing in people’s hearts to know and experience God,” he said.

More information about the “CSB Experiencing God Bible” can be found at Lifeway.com.
