(Colorado Springs, CO)—Magazine Training International (MTI) invites Christian magazine publishing professionals in Africa to attend the third event in a 10-year training program for Africa. The conference will be held 13-18 November, 2022, in Accra, Ghana.
The five-day Introduction to Magazine Publishing Course will cover editing, design, and management. Participants will gain the tools needed to successfully launch a magazine or update their current process for more effective and influential publication. Participants in the course will receive the 240-page Introduction to Magazine Publishing textbook.
The course will be followed by a one-day, limited-enrollment Hands-on Workshop designed to give practical help to participants as they make plans to start a new magazine or restart an existing one. All participants must have taken part in the Introduction to Magazine Publishing Course preceding the workshop.
Some of the topics to be covered in the course include the sound business principles needed to establish a magazine on a solid foundation, how to craft articles that touch the hearts and lives of readers, and mastery of design principles to create an attractive magazine that draws and engages readers.
MTI conferences are known for practical training and a genuine approach from the expert trainers.
“I came in to pursue excellence in my publication and what I left with was a map—a road map in which I can attain this excellence,” said Jim Olang with Afroscope magazine, an attendee of MTI’s conference in Kenya. “The trainers were relevant, credible, and what I loved most—they contextualized their examples. This resonated with me. It was definitely worth the time and resources.”
This year’s international team of trainers includes James Njoroge, art director of Timazi; Esther Nyaga, publishing manager of Publishing Institute of Africa; Jeremy Weber, director of CT Global at Christianity Today, David Renard, a partner with mediaIDEAS; Francis Ayieko, founder and publisher of The Shepherd; and Lea Greene, publication content manager and designer for SAconnects.
Training events will be presented in English, but because Ghana is surrounded by French-speaking countries, simultaneous interpretation in French will be available. The textbook is also available in French.
MTI’s prior conferences in Africa were held in Kenya in 2018 and Côte d’Ivoire in 2019. MTI provides professional development opportunities in-person and online to Christians in publishing around the world.
The mission of Magazine Training International is to encourage, strengthen, and provide resources to Christian magazines as they seek to build the church and reach their societies for Christ. Over the last 33 years, MTI offered 70 conferences, courses, and seminars in East/Central Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. In addition to on-site courses and conferences, MTI provides online courses and workshops, free e-books, training videos, course manuals in a dozen languages, and other print digital, audio, and audio-visual materials in a resource-packed library on MTI’s website.
