Ann Voskamp presents stunning new way for families to celebrate Advent

September 11, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

The Wonder of the Greatest Gift to release from Tyndale House Publishers November 7

Carol Stream, Ill. (September 5, 2017)—Ann Voskamp, New York Times bestselling author and one of today’s most influential Christian bloggers, presents the timeless Advent tradition of the Jesse Tree with a beautiful keepsake book all generations will enjoy. The Wonder of the Greatest Gift is scheduled to release from Tyndale House Publishers on November 7, 2017, just in time for the Advent season.

Based on her bestseller Unwrapping the Greatest Gift (Tyndale, November 2014), Voskamp offers a new, interactive way for families to celebrate a Christ-centered journey through the Advent season year after year.

“We are thrilled to partner with Ann on this exceptional family heirloom,” said Linda Howard, Associate Publisher for Children and Youth at Tyndale. “I love imagining families gathering around the tree, reading the day’s devotion, and placing an ornament on a branch each day of Advent. The Wonder of the Greatest Gift brings the focus back to the real reason we celebrate Christmas and creates a tradition parents will want to use as a guide through the season for years to come.”

Featuring an intricate three-dimensional pop-up tree, 24 beautiful ornaments, and a star-shaped tree topper, combined with simple devotional readings for each day of December, The Wonder of the Greatest Gift recaptures the sacredness of the season in an unforgettable way.

Ann Voskamp is a farmer’s wife, the home-educating mama to a half-dozen exuberant kids, and author of One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are, a New York Times 60-week bestseller. Named by Christianity Today as one of 50 women most shaping culture and the church today, she’s a global advocate for needy children with Compassion International, a loser of library books, a stirrer of soup, a loud laugher, a kid snuggler, a Jesus lover and honestly, a bit of a mess. It’s okay, really. Grace is the most amazing of all. Her online journal, one of the top 10 most widely read Christian blogs online, is a relief of quiet vulnerability and an oasis of sacred, seeing God in the everyday ugly beautiful: www.aholyexperience.com.

Tyndale House Publishers, founded in 1962, is the world’s largest privately held Christian publisher of books, Bibles, and digital media. Tyndale has published many New York Times bestsellers. The largest portion of its profit goes to the nonprofit Tyndale House Foundation, which makes grants to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of people around the world. Tyndale was founded to publish Living Letters, which later comprised part of The Living Bible, a contemporary paraphrase of the Bible that became a global publishing phenomenon. Warner Press releases veteran author Tina Houser’s 18th book

September 11, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

Anderson, Ind., September 5, 2017—Warner Press and author Tina Houser continue to grow their relationship with the release of Tina’s latest book, Fascinating Preschoolers. Houser’s latest book connects Sunday school teachers to a group of kids that are often overlooked as “too young” to connect to Jesus. She teaches us how to embrace their “fascination” and show them the wonder of the world God created.

“A preschooler’s existence is all about learning what their world is like,” said Tina Houser. “They’re seeing it for the first time, and it’s FASCINATING! It doesn’t mean that it’s a new technology, which fascinates adults more. It simply means that it’s new to them.”

After 33 incredible years in children’s ministry within the local church, Tina thrives on being able to train those who share her passion for reaching kids for the Kingdom.  She has authored 18 books, one of which is used as a textbook in select universities! She loves spending time with her three grandkids who give her tons of ideas to use in Kids Ministry and refer to her as “Silly Grandma.” You can find out more at tinahouser.net.

“Many people feel that during Sunday school and church, babysitting is what we do with preschoolers. In her book, Fascinating Preschoolers, Tina Houser has given us ample proof that these precious little ones want to learn, and to be fascinated by “doing,” not just playing” said editor, Karen Rhodes. “I learned so much from Tina in her class and from editing her book. It’s not only a great resource for teachers, but parents could learn so much from it too.”

Interesting to those in charge of teaching Sunday school to preschoolers (and parents), Fascinating Preschoolers builds on Houser’s already extensive background in teaching children in new, thought-provoking ways. Houser supplies easy-to-understand teaching methods that help you keep kids eager to learn about Jesus.

Fascinating Preschoolers includes a variety of ways to fascinate preschoolers and connect them to the Word. Fun science projects, musical instruments, games, and prayer ideas allow you to use the tools you have to connect with preschoolers in a totally unique way.  Tina’s years of experience become yours as you page through this new book.

Tyndale House Publishers to release The Swindoll Study Bible NLT in early October 2017

September 11, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

One of America’s best-loved and most respected pastors, Chuck Swindoll, partners with Tyndale to publish an insightful and immensely practical study Bible

Carol Stream, Ill. (September 6, 2017)—Tyndale House Publishers (@tyndalehouse) has announced that it will release The Swindoll Study Bible NLT (swindollstudybible.com) ($39.99, ISBN: 978141487253) in October 2017. The fruit of pastor, teacher, and author Chuck Swindoll’s more than 50 years in ministry, The Swindoll Study Bible offers the best of Swindoll’s biblical wisdom, wit, charm, and practical insight that gets straight to the heart of the Bible’s transformational message for the world today.

“This study Bible was designed with you, the reader, in mind,” said Swindoll. “As you read the Scriptures, imagine me sitting beside you and sharing personal stories, important insights, and hard-earned lessons that will encourage you to walk more closely with Jesus Christ.”

A lifelong desire to help people understand and apply God’s Word to their daily lives is the driving force behind The Swindoll Study Bible. Readers will find it the perfect complement to other study resources from Swindoll and other trusted authors.

Said Kevin O’Brien, Tyndale House Study Bible and Reference Brand Manager, “Based on recent conversations with Chuck, I think there are two words that really capture this Bible: relevance and practicality. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have scholarship or depth behind it! We often hear people say, ‘Well, this one is good for personal devotions and that one is good for serious study.’ My response is simple—if your devotions aren’t serious and your study isn’t personal, you’re doing it wrong. The Swindoll Study Biblereally does help you do both.”

The Swindoll Study Bible features include:

  • The clear, accurate New Living Translation: Chuck says, “When I am in the pulpit, the Bible I use is the New Living Translation. It is really a scholarly work, but it is readable.”
  • Living Insights include more than 1,600 study notes developed straight out of Chuck’s personal sermon notes.
  • Application Articles adapted from Chuck’s sermons include compelling stories, illustrations, and specific application points.
  • Holy Land Tour stops take readers on detailed excursions to significant biblical locations. It’s almost like touring the Holy Land with Chuck and his ministry team.
  • People Profiles explore illuminating lessons from figures in the biblical story that hit home with modern readers.
  • Prayer Moments feature heartfelt prayers from Chuck, asking God to help us live out the truths of His Word.
  • Book Introductions provide enlightening answers for five key questions that orient readers to essential details and themes for each book of the Bible.
  • Searching the Scriptures summarizes Chuck’s personal approach to Bible study and message preparation. Adapted from Chuck’s book of the same name, this article includes exercises to teach readers to prepare and serve their own nourishing spiritual meals.
  • Bible-reading plans, indexes, dictionary/concordance, and color maps help readers stay in the Word and better understand its context.

Added Swindoll, “How can I apply [Scripture] today? is a question more than any other that has fed my passion to publish this Bible. My primary focus in ministry has been preaching and teaching biblical insight for living . . . for genuine life change. After all, that’s why God communicated His Word to us—that we may become like his Son, Jesus Christ, the central figure of this Book.”

Tyndale House Publishers will support an extensive marketing campaign for the launch of The Swindoll Study Bible.

Charles R. Swindoll has devoted his life to the clear, practical teaching and application of God’s Word. Consistently ranked as one of America’s best-loved and most respected pastors, he is highly influential, a 12-time Gold Medallion winner, and a best-selling author and contributor to more than 70 titles. His Insight for Living radio program airs on more than 2,100 outlets around the world and in multiple languages.

The Art of Writing Conference, held on November 8 from 1-5 pm, will be a half-day event dedicated to writers, storytellers and publishing curators. Designed to bring together creators and curators, the conference will feature intensive seminars that celebrate the creative life, and provide practical tips for the challenges in this rapidly changing industry. Speakers and Panelists excel in a variety of roles and will be discussing issues including diversity in storytelling, handling discouragement, and various perspectives on living a creative life. Speakers include Andrew Peterson (musician, author and founder of The Rabbit Room), Theon Hill Ph.D.(Wheaton College), Carrie Schmidt (blogger), Cynthia Ruchti (author and agent), Beth Adams (Howard Books), Karen Watson (Tyndale House), Dan Balow (Gilead Publishing), Amy Green (Bethany House) and Chris Fabry (author and radio personality).

The Christy Award™ Gala will also take place on November 8, exactly 50 years after the novel Christy debuted on the New York Times Best Seller List for Fiction in 1967. The dinner event will be hosted by Best-Selling Christian Authors Karen Kingsbury, Andrew Peterson, and Chris Fabry and announce the winners of the 2017 Christy Awards in nine categories: General, Contemporary Romance, Historical Romance, Historical, Mystery/Suspense/Thriller, Visionary, First Novel, Young Adult and Short Form.

The Gala will also celebrate the 50th anniversary and re-release by Gilead Publishers of the groundbreaking novel Christy by Catherine Marshall and the awards’ namesake. Set in 1912, the novel shares the story of a young woman who leaves home to teach school in an impoverished community in the Smokey Mountains. Selling over 10 million copies, Christy opened doors for the genre, showcasing a need in the fiction market for stories of faith.

Since the demand for great stories of faith have been exceptionally on the rise over the past few years, both the quality and quantity of offerings released in 2017 have exceeded expectations.  As film producers in Hollywood continue to actively pursue good stories with strong faith undertones, Christian Fiction projects will only continue to grow in exposure.

The Jesus Calling podcast surpasses milestone of 500,000 subscribers

September 11, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

New episode features special guest Kathie Lee Gifford

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 8, 2017) – Thomas Nelson’s Jesus Calling podcast has reached a milestone of 500,000 subscribers in 18 months. The podcast features stories from readers of Jesus Calling and their compelling testimonies, provides insight into the lives and stories of remarkable people, celebrities, and leaders, and illustrates how spending time with the devotional has made a difference in people’s lives. Previous episodes have secured the #1 position in the Religion & Spirituality category on iTunes. The podcast is also available on other platforms such as Spotify, Stitcher, SoundCloud, and more.

The podcast has attracted guests with diverse backgrounds. Well-known celebrities, country music stars, ministers, authors, nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, Gospel singers, songwriters, and so many more each have shared how Jesus Calling has made an impact on their faith. The 57 podcast episodes have had guests ranging from Reba McEntire and Amy Grant, to sports announcer Ernie Johnson, Jr., to stories of women who have overcome addiction and brokenness through ministries of love.

“The Jesus Calling podcast has exceeded our wildest dreams,” said Michael Aulisio, vice president of marketing for gift books, Tommy Nelson children’s books and new media at Thomas Nelson. “Fans anxiously await new episodes each week and it has become an impactful, inspirational, and entertaining showcase of our diverse community of Jesus Calling readers.”

The Jesus Calling podcast featured one of its most recognizable guests this past week, when Kathie Lee Gifford shared her experiences with the devotional with listeners. Gifford, known for her longstanding career as a television host, singer, songwriter, comedian and actress, currently hosts the fourth hour of the TODAY Show alongside Hoda Kotb. Over the years, she has regularly shared her thoughts on how her faith has shaped her life, and reading all of Sarah Young’s books (Jesus Calling, Jesus Lives, Jesus Today, Jesus Always, and Dear Jesus) is an ingrained part of her routine.

“[Sarah] makes faith so accessible for people,” Gifford says in the episode. “It’s not that she takes the mystery out of it for people; I think she takes the fear out of it, and she makes it so natural. ‘Well, of course Jesus would talk to me this way. Well, of course Heavenly Father would say this to me.’ She does it in such a profoundly scriptural way.”

Gifford has given away more than 200 copies of Jesus Calling over the years and says, “No matter who I give this to—and it’s been atheists, it’s been Sikhs and it’s been Scientologists, it’s been broken-hearted Catholics, it’s been confused Baptists, it’s been every part of humanity that I give this out to—and every single one of them are reading it, and they say to me, ‘Oh my gosh, what I read today, it was like exactly what I needed—like God was talking straight to me.’” Future episodes will include interviews with Mark Batterson, Gloria Gaither, Max Lucado and Lisa Bevere, among others.

Churches can ignite passion for the Bible with the Community Bible Experience

September 11, 2017 by Sheri Toomb

Proven Program Now Available with Resources So All Can Participate, from the Youngest Children to Students and Adults

Grand Rapids, Mich., Sept. 8, 2017 — We all know we should read the Bible—and more deeply—and more often than once a week. Nothing is more important to personal spiritual growth, and church vitality, than a deep, sustained connection with the Bible.

Now churches can go on an unforgettable journey and reignite their passion for Scripture with the Community Bible Experience.

The Community Bible Experience is a complete and proven program (with more than five years of church campaign history) that offers a personally deep and engaging approach to reading the Scriptures called The Books of the Bible™. Not a verse here, or a chapter there; instead, whole books will be read in their original context. Through four 8-week increments, churches can read through the entire Bible in one year (or spread it over two years, or more).

The Community Bible Experience is designed to be a church-wide experience, with resources for all ages. The entire program is available November 28, 2017, including:

  • All four The Books of The Bible™ volumes (on Covenant History, The Prophets, The Writings, and the New Testament, in the accurate, readable, and clear New International Version) in durable hardcover for adults and teens;
  • all four The Books of the Bible for Kids volumes for children ages 8 to 12 (containing an abridgment of the easy-to-read New International Reader’s Version);
  • the My Bible Story Coloring Book for little ones;
  • The Books of the Bible Study Journal, which contains reading plans and space to journal for all four of the eight-week reading programs;
  • a Video Study DVD for adults and students;
  • curriculum for children (preschoolers, early elementary, and later elementary);
  • and a complete church resource kit, which includes everything a church needs to get started with the program, reading plans, and a quick start guide.

The Books of the Bible™ is a fresh, yet ancient, presentation of Scripture that removes centuries of added formatting (like chapter and verse numbers, cross references and footnotes, red letters and double columns), so readers can simply read and enjoy the Bible. All of the books of the Bible are arranged naturally, in a sequence both fascinating and revealing of the core story of God. Natural section breaks show the contours of each book in a way that traditional chapter-and-verse Bibles do not. Readers will be swept up in the narrative drama of the Bible, experiencing the Bible like it was by its first readers.

The Community Bible Experience is less like a Bible study and more like a book club. Each week, the following questions are discussed:What is something you noticed for the first time?

  • What questions did you have?
  • Was there anything that bothered you?
  • What did you learn about loving God?
  • What did you learn about loving others?

“Learning happens best in community, over time, so coming together to discuss what we’ve read is one of the most critical aspects of the Community Bible Experience,” says Doug Lockhart, senior v-p of Bible marketing and outreach. “The Community Bible Experience encourages honest, open conversations about the Bible for anyone, no matter where they are in their faith journey.”

“The bottom line is that the Community Bible Experience is a proven way to get people to read the whole Bible,” says Lockhart. “Biblica launched the initial The Books of the Bible several years ago, and we at Zondervan are excited to be bringing the program to a larger market and to be adding more resources to complete the program, including The Books of the Bible for Kids, and the My Bible Story Coloring Book, so even the littlest ones can join their families and congregations in reading through the Bible together.”

About the NIV: The New International Version (NIV) is the world’s bestselling modern-English Bible translation—accurate, readable, and clear, yet rich with the detail found in the original languages. The NIV is the result of over 50 years of work by the Committee on Bible Translation, who oversee the efforts of many contributing scholars. Representing the spectrum of evangelicalism, the translators come from a wide range of denominations and various countries and continually review new research in order to ensure the NIV remains at the forefront of accessibility, relevance, and authority. Every NIV Bible that is purchased helps Biblica, a nonprofit ministry organization, translate and give Bibles to people in need around the world. To learn more, visit www.thenivbible.com.
