Brian Zahnd signs two-book contract with IVP

November 15, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

WESTMONT, IL—Brian Zahnd, a popular conference speaker and author of A Farewell to Mars, has signed a contract for two more books with InterVarsity Press. The first of the two books, tentatively titled The Wood Between the Worlds, is scheduled to release in Winter 2023.

“We are so pleased to continue our publishing relationship with Brian Zahnd,” said Elissa Schauer, managing and associate trade editor at IVP. “This next book focuses on the cross—how it helps us understand who God is and how that knowledge can transform our lives. What we appreciate about Brian is that he writes with both empathy and authenticity as he points us toward a genuine faith that can flourish in this age. He is the pastor so many of us need for this moment in time.”

Zahnd’s first book with IVP, When Everything’s on Fire: Faith Forged from the Ashes (November 9, 2021), explores the question of whether it’s possible to hold on to faith in an age of unbelief. Zahnd extends an invitation to move beyond the crisis of faith and helps his readers understand and move toward the journey of reconstruction. In his next book, Zahnd looks to the cross to make sense of God in this age of unbelief. He says that everything that can be known about God is in some way present at the cross.

“The cross of Christ is the wood between the worlds,” Zahnd writes. “There is the world that was and the world to come, and in between those two worlds is the wood upon which the Son of God was hung. As in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, the wood between the worlds is a portal. In this world of sin and death we do not despair, because we believe there is a portal that will transport us to a world where, in the beloved words of Lady Julian, ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.’”

Brian Zahnd is the founder and lead pastor of Word of Life Church, a nondenominational Christian congregation in Saint Joseph, Missouri. He and his wife, Peri, founded the church in 1981. Zahnd is also the author of several books, including Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Water to Wine, Beauty Will Save the World, Unconditional?: The Call of Jesus to Radical Forgiveness and others.

“A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism” features daily, fascinating and historical stories for kids

November 15, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

Daily devotional introduces children to more than 300 Saints who did extraordinary things for God. Releases Tuesday, Nov. 23.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 11, 2021) – Mother Teresa left her family at age 18 to become a missionary. St. Patrick helped spread Christianity to Ireland. St. Jerome translated the Bible into Latin. St. Jacinta Marto was a prayer warrior who led a crowd of 70,000 people in prayer at only 10 years old. Author Meredith Hines presents a new resource for learning about the lives of Saints and their legacies of faith for young believers in A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism releasing Tuesday, Nov. 23 everywhere books are sold.

The word saint refers to all Christians, but A Saint a Day focuses on Saints with a capital S—those who have been officially recognized by the Catholic Church. To be recognized as a Saint, a few things must happen. For example, when a righteous person dies, witnesses provide evidence of the person’s love for Jesus to the Catholic Church. A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism is a new resource to teach children to walk in faith, act justly, and lead with kindness and humility.

“I wrote A Saint A Day to give children and parents an engaging introduction to the Saints, who are heroes of the Christian faith,” said Hinds. “I think of each devotional as a handshake with a Saint. I want readers to see how each of these Saints, as different as they were, gave everything they had to Jesus. Some Saints were parents and others were priests. Some were wealthy and some had nothing. Some were children and others lived to be very old. But each of the Saints had this in common – Jesus was the center of their life. They lived for Him and they inspire us to do the same – to give Jesus everything.”

A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism readers will learn about Saints, Venerables and Blesseds from all over the world including Africa, the Philippines, South America, South Korea, Mexico, and the United States like Oklahoma, Hawaii, Illinois and more. Children also will learn fascinating facts like who was the first American-born Saint, the first Cuban priest and the first Native American to become a Saint.

Each daily summary can pique the natural curiosity of kids as they discover fun and distinctive details such as who taught the power of children prayers, who had a strange diet of locusts and honey, who was nicknamed the “walking dictionary,” who the Apostles chose to replace Judas Iscariot, who played the accordion, who sat on a 55-foot-high pillar for 36 years and who had a pet lion.

Parents also can find A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism to be a useful tool to prompt thoughtful conversation and value-driven lessons, as Hines shares the considerable challenges that many Saints faced during their life including war, racial tensions, illness, false accusations and more.

“I can’t imagine life without the encouragement of the Saints,” said Hinds. “I find so much help and hope from the stories of their lives. As I researched more than 300 Saints, who lived throughout history and across the world, I became convinced that there is no circumstance or question or challenge that could come up in my life that hasn’t already been faced by one of the Saints.”

A great choice for educational and spiritual development, A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism is perfect for homeschool, Sunday school, Catholic school, a first Communion or graduation gift, or simply a child’s time alone with God. Written for ages 8 to 12, A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism can help children grow in their understanding of church history, the long history of people of faith and better understand how they can love and serve God.

A Saint a Day: 365 True Stories of Faith and Heroism (ISBN: 9781400228539) will be released on November 23, 2021 everywhere books are sold.

Penny Maxwell shares her gripping testimony to help readers find hope, healing and freedom from devastating hurts

November 15, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

Lake Mary, FL — Author Penny Maxwell recounts her traumatic childhood marked by poverty, abuse, and sexual assault and shares the hard truths she learned through her own healing journey in her powerful new book, Setting Broken Bones: Let God Heal What Hurt You (ISBN-13: 978-1636411132, Charisma House).

Maxwell’s frank and honest anecdotes about her life give a personal connection and voice to what freedom in Christ looks like after heartbreak. “Don’t bail out just because it feels rough sometimes. God has a destination for you, a better place…I know you can make it, because I did.”

Maxwell’s story is a revealing look into a family deeply flawed and broken. In her account, she shares how she was able to find hope and healing through her relationship with Christ. While the journey to forgiveness has not been an easy one, Maxwell notes that the weight that has come off of her shoulders has encouraged her to be the wife, mother, and minister she never would have been without God resetting the “broken bones” of her damaged childhood.

Using the analogy of a person walking around with broken physical bones that never healed properly, Maxwell confronts readers with a truth: we can either walk around in pain as if the bones that were not properly set never healed or experience the temporary pain of having them set properly so healing can occur.

“I have lived in that place of sharp, continuing pain that clouded my emotions and stole my ability to trust anyone,” Maxwell writes. “Thankfully I have received God’s mercy toward the broken. My journey has shown me firsthand how God resets our broken bones so they heal up. That way we can move on in wholeness, peace, and personal fulfillment.”

Maxwell not only experienced a supernatural, transformative forgiveness for those who left scars, but she boldly shares her story to help others come to this same kind of freedom-giving release of past pains.

“Sometimes the pain is sharp, the memory fresh, the feeling persistent,” Maxwell writes. “Or maybe the hurts are so familiar—and so abundant—that you’re not exactly sure what is causing them anymore. But under the surface these wrongly set fractures remain. And they are hindering your progress. It’s hard to do life with bones that healed crookedly. So many try to press through, to get along, to smile, to fake it till they make it to a place of healing…Now is your time. You can heal right. I know because I did.”

No matter what kind of background a person has had—whether one with lots of mountaintops or valleys, Maxwell affirms that God has a plan and a path for each and every person who decides to follow Him, put away the hurt, go for forgiveness, and walk into a new life.

Setting Broken Bones by Penny Maxwell is released by Charisma House, which publishes books that challenge, encourage, teach, and equip Christians.

Bestselling authors, interior design personalities combine home, spiritual design and wisdom in new book

November 8, 2021 by Sheri Toomb

Victoria Duerstock and Paige Rien Candidly Discuss the Parallels of the Work We Do in Our Homes and Our Souls in ‘Revived and Renovated’

NASHVILLE, Tenn., November 2021—It’s hard to hear the terms “revival” and “renovation” without picturing one of HGTV’s many dynamic duos in safety goggles with hammers in hand. But reviving and renovating both have much deeper meanings when they’re applied inwardly. Interior design personalities, bestselling authors, close friends, and a dynamic duo of their own, Victoria Duerstock and Paige Rien take a look at the parallels between reviving and renovating our homes and our souls in their new book, Revived and Renovated: Real Life Conversations on the Intersection of Home, Faith and Everything in Between (End Game Press, November 2021).

“We tend to think of renovation as a big project to the home, but renovations come in all shapes and sizes,” writes Duerstock. “Sometimes more substantial work is required to make a house better—sometimes, all that’s required or possible is a deep clean and good paint job. God’s work in us is no different—at times it’s earth-shattering, other times it’s more subtle and gentle.”

A candid conversation between friends, Revived and Renovated combines the wisdom and life experiences of two do-it-yourself professional home renovators, their life and spiritual journeys, and biblical wisdom to encourage readers as they do the work of reviving and renovating their souls. Duerstock and Rien delve into other aspects of these journeys as well, including what it means to restore, refurbish, reclaim, renew, refocus, remake, repurpose, rename, and recover different areas of our homes and our souls.

Duerstock and Rien are available for interviews and can speak to:

  • The similarities between home and soul renovation
  • How to find spiritual revival on a daily basis
  • What authenticity looks like in our homes and in our hearts
  • The importance of godly friends on our spiritual journeys
  • What it means to reclaim your story
  • The key to reclaiming and refurbishing our lives: the Gospel
  • Recovery from addiction and restoration from personal brokenness

“I think that the idea of recovering one day at a time and growing in our walk with God one day at a time, it’s beautiful,” writes Rien. “It’s like an old piece of furniture that needs a lot of work, but we’re getting there, slowly but surely.”

Covering topics of home renovation with corresponding Biblical wisdom and perspectives from their personal walks with God, Revived and Renovated will be an encouragement to young and old alike.
