Officer commissioned with restoring order to Ferguson in wake of Michael Brown shooting to publish 13 Days in Ferguson with Tyndale Momentum

March 26, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

Memoir with Behind-the-Scenes Look at Ferguson Protests Releases in August 2018

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (March 22, 2018) – It was a news story that captivated a nation. On August 14, 2014, five days after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown ignited race riots in the city of Ferguson, Missouri, Captain Ron Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol was charged with the task of restoring peace between local police and angry protesters—many of whom had engaged in destructive and violent acts. In 13 Days in Ferguson (ISBN 978-1-4964-1657-5, HC, $25.99), Johnson provides readers with a behind-the-scenes look at the Ferguson protests and the instrumental role he played in addressing the anger and hurt of a damaged community. The book, cowritten by Alan Eisenstock, is scheduled for an August 2018 release.

The days and nights that followed Brown’s death were the most trying of Johnson’s life—professionally, emotionally, and spiritually. Officers in his own command called him a traitor. Lifelong friends stopped speaking to him. The media questioned his every decision. Alone at the center of the firestorm, with only his family and faith to cling to, Johnson persevered in his belief that the only way to effectively bridge the dived between black and blue is to—literally—walk across it.

In 13 Days in Ferguson, Johnson shares for the first time his view of what happened during the turbulent days following Michael Brown’s death and the extraordinary impact those two weeks had on his faith, on his approach to leadership, and on shaping what he perceives to be the most viable solution to the issues of racism and prejudice in America.

Johnson’s memoir will be supported by a comprehensive marketing campaign as well as a national media tour.

Captain Ronald S. Johnson was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He holds a criminal justice degree and is a graduate of Northwestern University Traffic Institute of Police Staff and Command and a 2014 graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He is certified in police instruction and the development and implementation of assessment-center exercises for command-level staff officers. Captain Johnson and his wife, Lori, have been married for 29 years and have two adult children, Amanda and Bradley.

Alan Eisenstock is the author of 15 books, most recently Hang Time: My Life in Basketball (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), written with NBA legend Elgin Baylor. He lives in Pacific Palisades, California.

Tyndale House Publishers, founded in 1962, is one of the largest privately held Christian publishers of books, Bibles, and digital media in the world. Tyndale Momentum, Tyndale’s nonfiction imprint, is the publisher of many New York Times bestsellers and is known for integrity in building lasting personal relationships with authors and agents. Tyndale extends the ministry of its authors by contributing most of its profits to the nonprofit Tyndale House Foundation, which makes grants to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of people around the world. Tyndale was founded to publish Living Letters, which later comprised part of The Living Bible, a contemporary paraphrase of the Bible that became a global publishing phenomenon. Tyndale now publishes the Holy Bible, New Living Translation (NLT), the translation of choice for millions of people.

Four IVP titles named Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards finalists

March 26, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

WESTMONT, IL—InterVarsity Press (IVP) is pleased to announce that four IVP titles have been recognized as finalists for Foreword Reviews’ 2017 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards. Finalists were narrowed down by Foreword’s editors from over 2,000 individual titles spread across sixty-eight categories. IVP books were chosen as finalists in the following categories:

Essays (Adult Nonfiction)

Vintage Saints and Sinners: 25 Christians Who Transformed My Faith by Karen Wright Marsh introduces us to twenty-five brothers and sisters who lived and breathed, and failed and followed God. Narrating her own winding pilgrimage through faith, Marsh reveals surprising lessons in everyday spirituality from “saints” such as Augustine, Brother Lawrence, and Saint Francis, as well as Amanda Berry Smith, Søren Kierkegaard, Dorothy Day, Howard Thurman, Flannery O’Connor, and many more.

Multicultural (Adult Nonfiction)

In Beyond Colorblind: Redeeming Our Ethnic Journey, Sarah Shin, an ethnicity and evangelism specialist, reveals how our brokenness around ethnicity can be restored and redeemed for our own wholeness and also for the good of others. Showing us how to make space for God’s healing of our ethnic stories, Shin helps us grow in our crosscultural skills, manage crosscultural conflict, pursue reconciliation and justice, and share the gospel as ethnicity-aware Christians.

Multicultural (Adult Nonfiction)

In The Myth of Equality: Uncovering the Roots of Injustice and Privilege, Ken Wytsma, founder of The Justice Conference, unpacks what we need to know to be grounded in conversations about today’s race-related issues. And he helps us come to a deeper understanding of both the origins of these issues and the reconciling role we are called to play as witnesses of the gospel.

Religion (Adult Nonfiction)

In an age where neither society nor the church knows what to do with gay Christians, Gregory Coles shares his story in Single, Gay, Christian: A Personal Journey of Faith and Sexual Identity. It’s a story about a boy in love with Jesus who, at the fateful onset of puberty, realized his sexual attractions were persistently and exclusively for other guys. Still, from a young age he remained introspective, active in church circles, and absolutely committed to his faith, all of which led him to explore what Christian life might mean for someone who was both certain of their identity and secure in it, and convinced of the truth of the gospels.

Each year, Foreword Reviews shines a light on a select group of indie publishers, university presses, and self-published authors whose work stands out from the crowd. In the next three months a panel of volunteer librarians and booksellers will determine the winners in each category based on their experience with readers and patrons.

Winners in each genre—along with Editor’s Choice Prize winners and Foreword’s INDIE Publisher of the Year—will be announced June 15, 2018.

Thomas Nelson and Sony Music Nashville launch new store displays with Dolly Parton’s Children’s CD, alongside Jesus Calling devotional products, at Kroger®

March 26, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

Displays will be in select Kroger stores Mar. 19-Apr. 22

NASHVILLE, March 22, 2018 — Today, Thomas Nelson and Sony Music Nashville announced a partnership with select Kroger® stores to display Dolly Parton’s children’s CD, I Believe In You, alongside the bestselling devotional, Jesus Calling. The displays will be available beginning March 19.

Parton, who recently shared stories from her upbringing and how her faith taught her the importance of giving back on the Jesus Calling Podcast, released her children’s CD called I Believe In You (RCA Records, an imprint of Sony Music), on Amazon in late 2017. In her podcast interview, she mentioned that the songs will “lift the children up, and they’ll learn and be taught by the messages that [she has].” She noted how rewarding it is to sing about the positive things, making the CD and devotional a perfect pairing on the store displays.

“It’s important for families to read, pray, and sing together,” Parton said. “Jesus Calling and I Believe in You can bring families closer together.”

Parton knows first-hand the impact that reading can have on a child’s life. She founded the Imagination Library, a program that provides free books each month to children from birth to age five across the world, in 1995. Earlier this year, the Imagination Library sent its 100 millionth book, and proceeds from I Believe in You will further expand the reach of the Imagination Library to children all over the world.

“We are excited for the chance to work on this initiative to bring families closer together through two things Dolly is passionate about-music and reading,” said John Zarling, executive vice president of marketing & new business at Sony Music Nashville. “It is especially impactful to work with a major retailer like Kroger. It is an opportunity to expand the reach of the products, yes, but more importantly, we know that this will go a long way to strengthen the bond that families share.”

Beginning Mar. 19, the floor displays will be in 400 Kroger stores primarily spanning the Southeast region of the U.S. (Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama). The partnership will be supported through television ads in key markets on HGTV, Hallmark, and TV Land; streaming radio advertising; and social media promotion from both Jesus Calling and Dolly Parton.

“We have heard countless stories about how the Jesus Calling family of products have made a positive impact on people’s lives over the years,” said Michael Aulisio, senior vice president of marketing for gift books, children’s books, and new media at Thomas Nelson. “We hope to create even more of an impact with this new partnership and are grateful to be working with Dolly Parton and the Sony Music Nashville group.”

Jesus Calling has sold more than 22 million copies since it was published in 2004. The line of products includes adult devotionals, coloring books, children’s books, a Bible storybook, custom versions, and many other products. More information is available at www.jesuscalling.com.

Margaret West Taylor, widow of Dr. Kenneth Taylor and cofounder of Tyndale House Publishers, passes at 100 years old

March 19, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

Carol Stream, Ill. – Tyndale House Publishers today announced that Margaret West Taylor, widow of Dr. Kenneth Taylor and cofounder of Tyndale House Publishers, passed peacefully into eternal life with Jesus on March 12, 2018. She was born on March 23, 1917, in Oswego, Oregon, and died in Winfield, Illinois.

“My mom lived a quiet but vibrant life for more than 100 years, and she was ready for this final step,” said Mark Taylor, chairman and CEO of Tyndale House. “Members of her family were at her bedside, singing hymns and reading Scripture. We rejoice in a life well lived. Many years ago she selected the verse that has already been engraved on her tombstone: ‘For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others’ (Mark 10:45). In the same way that Jesus came to serve others, Margaret dedicated her life to serving her family and others with whom she came in contact.”

Kenneth and Margaret Taylor were the founders of Tyndale House Publishers and Tyndale House Foundation. The mission of both organizations is “to minister to the spiritual needs of people, primarily through literature consistent with biblical principles.” Through these ministries, millions of people have been able to read God’s Word in easy-to-understand translations (The Living Bible; the Holy Bible, New Living Translation; and the Santa Biblia, Nueva Traducción Viviente). Although Margaret worked at Tyndale House for nearly 20 years in its early days (1962–1981), she was always quick to say that caring for her family was her highest priority.

Margaret studied home economics at Oregon State University (and at Wheaton College for one year), graduating with the highest GPA of anyone in the department. After a long courtship that culminated in marriage in 1940, Margaret and Ken Taylor embarked on a remarkable, and at times challenging, ministry journey.

By the time Tyndale House Publishers was launched with the publication of Living Letters in July 1962, the Taylors had 10 children. Margaret was the glue that held the family together, navigating through several moves due to the housing shortage following World War II and managing a large household with limited finances. Meanwhile, Ken commuted long distances to work and was often gone for days at a time. In the dedication of his autobiography, Ken Taylor wrote of Margaret, “She worked unceasingly at home during the family years.” He later described her as “the stronger one” during that difficult period.

Margaret also had a hands-on role in the business, working as a proofreader, an order-entry clerk, and business manager, effectively serving as Tyndale’s first COO. She retired from business operations in 1981 at age 64. The company had grown from ground zero to being one of the larger Christian publishing companies in the world. In April 2001, Tyndale House achieved record annual sales; later that year, Ken and Margaret Taylor transferred ownership of the company to the Tyndale House Foundation.

In addition to her impact on the vision and long-term success of Tyndale House Publishers, Margaret Taylor’s legacy is one of faith and dependence on God. Throughout her 100 years, she was, and will continue to be, an extraordinary example of what it means to love and follow Christ wholeheartedly and in all circumstances. Ken Taylor wrote, “Her own quiet, steady love for our Lord has been a constant inspiration to me”—just as it has been for all who knew her.

Margaret is survived by all 10 of her children: Becky Kraft; John Taylor and his wife, Mary Tall Taylor; Marty Taylor and her husband, Art Grosman; Peter Taylor and his wife, Sharon; Janet Taylor and her husband, Wayne Martin; Mark Taylor and his wife, Carol; Cynthia Brown; Gretchen Worcester and her husband, Bob; Mary Lee Bayly and her husband, Tim; and Alison Lingo and her husband, Jim. Margaret was proud of her 28 grandchildren and 79 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Kenneth, her husband of 65 years, who passed away in 2005.

The funeral (a service of celebration) will be held at 10:00 AM at College Church in Wheaton on Friday, March 23.  More at www.tyndale.com/stories/tyndale-house-celebrates-the-life-of-margaret-taylor

In lieu of sending flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts can be given to one of Margaret’s favorite ministries, including College Church in Wheaton (www.college-church.org) and The Seed Company, a ministry of Wycliffe Bible Translators (www.theseedcompany.org).

Tyndale House Publishers, founded in 1962, is the world’s largest privately held Christian publisher of books, Bibles, and digital media. Tyndale has published many New York Times bestsellers. The largest portion of its profit goes to the nonprofit Tyndale House Foundation, which makes grants to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of people around the world. Tyndale was founded to publish Living Letters, which later comprised part of The Living Bible, a contemporary paraphrase of the Bible that became a global publishing phenomenon. Tyndale now publishes the Holy Bible, New Living Translation (NLT), the translation of choice for millions of people.

United States Senator Tim Scott and Congressman Trey Gowdy to attend multiple events to promote “Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope for a Divided Country”

March 19, 2018 by Sheri Toomb

Unified Releases April 3 from Tyndale Momentum

CAROL STREAM, Ill. (March 14, 2018) – Tyndale House Publishers announces United States Senator Tim Scott and Congressman Trey Gowdy will launch their new book,Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope for a Divided Country, with a comprehensive media and book signing tour marking the book’s release on Tuesday, April 3. Information about South Carolina events is available at: http://www.unifiedtour.com/

In Unified, Senator Scott and Congressman Gowdy share their personal experiences, including many that predate their coming to Washington together in 2010, and the critical truths they’ve learned in their own lives to help others overcome differences, strengthen bonds, build unity, and eliminate fears. They encourage others to create their own stories, clean the slate of the past, extend the hand of friendship, and ultimately to pursue reconciliation even in these seemingly divided and conflicted times.  Senator Scott and Congressman Gowdy believe there is a yearning, a hunger for unity in our country.

The evening events will feature extended speaking times featuring both authors, followed by a book signing of the new release Unified. While both Senator Scott and Congressman Gowdy are currently in politics, politics does not define who they are or why they pursue reconciliation and unity for our country.  Instead, they have chosen to lay aside partisan politics and encourage all of their fellow citizens to discover the joy and satisfaction that comes from relationships that are real and deep, and that can transcend the racial, political and social lines.  Unlikely friendships have altered the course of their own lives, for the better, and they both believe the country will benefit when Americans focus more on what binds us together and less on what divides us apart.

Senator Scott and Congressman Gowdy will start the Unified book tour with a book signing at BookEnds in Ridgewood, N.J., at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2. They will appear together Sunday April 1 on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” Other media appearances will include CBS “This Morning,” “FOX & Friends,” ABC’s “The View,” CNN’s “New Day,” and FOX News’s “The Story with Martha McCallum.”

Originally founded to publish The Living Bible, a contemporary paraphrase of the Bible that became a global publishing phenomenon, Tyndale now publishes the Holy Bible, New Living Translation (NLT), the translation of choice for millions of people.
