Songwriter and storyteller Caroline Cobb to release her first book with B&H Publishers

August 19, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

NASHVILLE, TENN. (AUGUST 12, 2024) B&H Publishing announces the release of songwriter and storyteller Caroline Cobb’s first book, Advent for Exiles, releasing September 24th. This special advent devotional will feature 25 devotions to awaken Christmas hope in a longing heart. Preorder this Scripture-rich companion for the Advent season now.

In 2020, Cobb released A Seed, A Sunrise, an album that explored the ache of Advent, the joy of Christmas, and the expectant yearning for Christ’s return. That album inspires this Advent devotional as she dives deeper into the poetic imagery of Isaiah and the biblical theme of exile.

“After releasing my Christmas album, I began work on this ’side project,'” shares Caroline Cobb. “But in the writing, I discovered the album had barely scratched the surface for me. I wanted to dive deeper into the poetic imagery of Isaiah, draw more connections between our current experience and the biblical theme of exile, and help readers imaginatively engage in the ache of Advent as a way of expanding their joy at Christ’s coming. Advent for Exiles is the fruit of more than two years of writing and wrestling this deep dive into words.”

Throughout the 25-day devotional, Cobb weaves Scripture readings, song lyrics, poetic prose, biblical imagery, and responsive exercises to help readers joyfully celebrate Christ’s first arrival while deeply longing for His second.

She adds, “This devotional is written for those who have felt—or at least feel ready to acknowledge—the long groan of exile. We need Advent companions willing to recognize the darkness around and within. Only then will we be able to fully rejoice in the arrival of Jesus, the Light of the world. I pray Advent for Exiles will do just that.”

Book Details:
Title: Advent for Exiles
ISBN: 9781430095842
Page Count: 240
Release Date: Sept. 24, 2024
Suggested Price: $19.99
B&H Publishing – Hardcover

ABOUT CAROLINE COBB:  Before her thirtieth birthday, Caroline Cobb set a goal to write a song for every book of the Bible in one year. That year set a new calling into motion: to tell God’s Story through music and other creative work, helping you rehearse it and respond to it as you go about your everyday life. Her most recent album, Psalms: The Poetry of Prayer (May 2023) gives voice to a rich range of prayers from the Psalms and builds on Caroline’s previous storytelling projects A King & His Kindness (2021), A Seed, A Sunrise (2020), a Home & a Hunger (2017), and the Blood + the Breath (2013). Caroline has been featured by Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, The Rabbit Room, Risen Motherhood, and many more, with a Home & a Hunger named among “The Best Albums of the Decade (2010’s)” by The Gospel Coalition. She and her husband Nick live in Dallas, Texas, with their three children Ellie, Harrison, and Libby.

What others are saying about Advent for Exiles:

“Advent for Exiles weaves a glorious tapestry of good news that will help you experience Advent in a meaningful new way.”
—Ruth Chou Simons, Wall Street Journal bestselling author, artist, and founder of gracelaced.com

“I love a good Advent devotional, and this is a great one. Infused with a beautifully coherent, biblically rich exilic theme throughout, Caroline Cobb’s Advent for Exiles takes the reader deeper into a full-Bible understanding of Advent. Including Scripture passages, poetic song lyrics, and responses in prayer and practice, Advent for Exiles is an engaging resource to enhance you and your family’s Advent season.”
—Brett McCracken, senior editor, The Gospel Coalition, author of The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World

“Advent for Exiles stands out from any devotional I’ve come across. This book not only compels readers to love the story of Scripture more but also encourages weary exiles to find hope in Christ – engaging our senses and imagination with biblical truth. It is a deeply encouraging read that will move you to rejoice in Christ’s first coming and yearn for his return—a perfect choice for the Advent season.”

What Others Are Saying

“Resources like this were virtually nonexistent when I was growing up as an Asian American youth. The topics covered here are issues I struggled with then and which still persist in today’s Asian American youth culture. Having teenagers myself, I know this book is tethered to their concerns. Since knowing Jesus means everything, I hope you’ll seek, find, and draw closer to him through the wisdom of these important voices!”
~ Matthew D. Kim, Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Leadership and George W. Truett Endowed Chair of Preaching and Evangelism, Truett Seminary, Baylor University

“Although the experiences of Asian American high school students vary greatly, Jesus can relate to each and every one of us. These personal narratives reveal how Jesus can meet us in our deepest wounds and darkest moments. They’re lessons I wish I learned when I was a teenager and spiritual insights I still need to embrace.”
~ Russell Jeung, Professor of Asian American Studies, San Francisco State University; cofounder, Stop AAPI Hate

“This book speaks directly at the heart of the Asian American high school experience. The contributors’ honesty and vulnerability come through in their varied and relatable stories, each thoughtfully processed through the lens of Jesus and the gospel. This book is a gift for the countless teenagers seeking guidance and support in understanding their struggles through the transformative power of Jesus. Pastors and parents of teenagers should consider using this as a tool for their students.”
~ Steve Chang, Senior Pastor, Living Hope Community Church, Brea, CA; chair, SOLA Network

“In an era of seemingly sparse Asian American youth ministry resources, this anthology of incredible anecdotes will resonate with, comfort, and compel its respective readers. The authors have beautifully recounted and reframed their experiences through the lens of Christ and the gospel, so much that deep down, my teenage self has never felt more seen, heard, understood, encouraged, and healed.”
~ Dorothy Lau, Youth Director,Chinese Bible Church of Maryland, Rockville, MD

Amanda and Dallas Jenkins of ‘The Chosen’ announce new Bible Study

August 12, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

God’s Goodness for the Chosen: An Interactive Bible Study Season 4
is available now

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE / August 7, 2024 – From the authors of the Bible studies that tie hand-in-hand with The Chosen seasons 1, 2 and 3, Amanda Jenkins, Dallas Jenkins, and Dr. Douglas S. Huffman’s newest Bible study God’s Goodness for the Chosen: An Interactive Bible Study Season 4 addresses the issues of suffering and the goodness that comes out of it.

This study is inspired by season 4 of The Chosen and serves as a companion guide of the show, teaching readers how to reframe their hardships and see them as fertile soil for God’s goodness to grow in their lives. God’s Goodness for the Chosen takes readers through eight lessons which reveal how God uses suffering to bring about good things in the lives of those He loves. Readers will be challenged to embrace the hard things of life, to experience more of the goodness God offers on the other side.

Some topics explored in God’s Goodness for The Chosen:

  • Death is eclipsed by life
  • Grief is eclipsed by praise
  • Questions are eclipsed by resolve
  • Confusion is eclipsed by grace
  • Temporary things are eclipsed by eternal things
  • Heartbreak is eclipsed by love
  • Sin is eclipsed by obedience
  • Pain is eclipsed by the fullness of God’s plan

God’s Goodness for The Chosen is an eight-lesson study, ideal for Fall of 2024 & Spring of 2025 bible studies.
