Crossway celebrates two 2024 ECPA Christian Book Award winners

May 6, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

WHEATON, Ill.—Crossway is pleased to announce that both “Digital Liturgies: Rediscovering Christian Wisdom in an Online Age” (Crossway, September 2023) by Samuel D. James and “Knowing God’s Truth: An Introduction to Systematic Theology” (Crossway, May 2023) by Jon Nielson have won 2024 Christian Book Awards in their respective categories from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA).

Justin Taylor, Crossway’s executive vice president of book publishing, writes, “It’s gratifying to see these works by Samuel James and Jon Nielson recognized. It’s hard to think of many topics more pressing and relevant than what they address: Digital Liturgies offers insightful biblical wisdom from a tech-realist perspective on how patterns of online life shape and interact with our deepest desires, and Knowing God’s Truth seeks to equip the next generation with a guide for thinking God’s thoughts after him so that young readers can grow into good theologians as faithful Christians. What a joy to publish such competent and compelling works that meet the needs of God’s people!”

Digital Liturgies tied for the award in the Faith and Culture category. This accessible book by Samuel D. James exposes five “digital liturgies” that prohibit people from contemplating big truths, accepting the uncomfortable, and acknowledging God as their Creator. It then calls readers to live faithfully before Christ, finding wisdom through Scripture and rest in God’s perfect design.

Knowing God’s Truth, winner in the Ministry Resources category, is written by pastor Jon Nielson as part of Crossway’s Theology Basics series, to make systematic theology clear, meaningful, and practical for those looking for a highly accessible guide to studying God. In this introduction, Nielson defines systematic theology as “theological study done in a highly organized, topical way” and covers the twelve basic categories—Scripture, man, sin, church, and more. He also helps readers learn to apply theology in their everyday lives by integrating invitations to pray and meditate on what they’ve learned.

According to the ECPA’s website, the Christian Book Award® program recognizes the highest quality in Christian books and Bibles in twelve categories, and is the oldest and among the most prestigious awards programs in the religious publishing industry.

Samuel James is the associate acquisitions editor at Crossway. He is the author of Digital Liturgies, a regular newsletter on Christianity, technology, and culture. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with his wife, Emily, and their three children.

Jon Nielson (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) serves as the senior pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church of Wheaton in Wheaton, Illinois. He is coeditor of the book GospelCentered Youth Ministry and author of the Theology Basics series. He and his wife, Jeanne, have four children.

Founded in 1938, Crossway is a not-for-profit global Christian publishing ministry that publishes gospel-centered, Bible-based content to honor our Savior and serve his church. Crossway seeks to help people understand the all-encompassing implications of the gospel and the truth of God’s word—for all of life, for all eternity, and for the glory of God alone. The NavPress book “Loving Disagreement: Fighting for Community through the Fruit of the Spirit” receives an ECPA Christian Book Award in Faith & Culture

May 6, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado. (May 6, 2024) – Loving Disagreement by Kathy Khang and Matt Mikalatos was one of two Christian Book Award® winners in the Faith & Culture category named by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association.

“I am fiercely proud of this book and of Kathy and Matt’s commitment to not just writing the message but living it,” said Caitlyn Carlson, NavPress senior editor. “It’s a call to step into the tensions of our world and wrestle with what it really looks like to love, to be gentle, and to live faithfully.”

Previously named book of the year by the Englewood Review of Books, Loving Disagreement considers how the fruit of the Spirit helps Christians engage in conflict more constructively and redemptively. Rather than civility, the authors contend, Christian virtues such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and more lead to better engagement and resolution of disagreement.

“Matt and Kathy worked really hard to craft a book that delivers on such an audacious promise,” said NavPress publisher David Zimmerman. “We’re grateful for the recognition from our industry of the significance of their work.”

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. — Lifeway, B&H Publishing and Holman Bible Publishers recently announced the CSB “She Reads Truth Bible” achieved a Platinum Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) for selling more than 1 million copies.

Lifeway’s Books and Bibles teams celebrated this significant milestone with Amanda Bible Williams and Raechel Myers, founders of She Reads Truth™.

“We’re so thankful for our partnership with Raechel, Amanda and the whole She Reads Truth™ team,” said Andy McLean, Lifeway’s director of Bibles and Reference. “To be able to lock arms with ministry partners to get Bibles into the hands of a million women is a remarkable thing. We are honored to come alongside the She Reads Truth™ team and steward this Bible.”

Describing the physical beauty of the “She Reads Truth Bible,” McLean said it reflects the beauty found in Scripture. “The Bible has a lot to say about beauty. We have a beautiful message in the gospel. We have a beautiful message in the story of redemption from creation to restoration. As publishers, we should want the medium to reflect the beauty of the message,” McLean said.

“We are so thankful to B&H for the work they’ve done to bring this Bible to the hands of a million women,” said Myers. “We didn’t do this. The surprise is that the Lord was able to use us. He has shown His kindness to us all along the way in the form of people and partners like Lifeway.”

What began with a simple tweet and the #shereadstruth hashtag in 2012 has now grown into a worldwide movement and community of “women in the Word of God every day.”

“She Reads Truth was born out of a desire to make Bible-reading part of our daily lives,” said Williams. “To know that the ‘She Reads Truth Bible’ has served to invite a million women into God’s Word—some of them for the very first time—is just incredible. Thanks be to God.”

Twelve years later, She Reads Truth™ serves a global community of more than a million women, men, and children with daily Bible reading plans and resources, including digital resources like the She Reads Truth™ app, website and podcast and printed resources like the “She Reads Truth Bible,” published in 2017, the CSB “He Reads Truth Bible” and the “She Reads Truth” book.

Dr. Michael Brown is ‘Turning the Tide’ for a cultural revolution in his latest release

April 29, 2024 by Sheri Toomb

Lake Mary, Fla.— Dr. Michael Brown is taking charge to see revival shift into a cultural revolution in his latest release, Turn the Tide (May 7, 2024, Charisma House, ISBN-13: 978-1-63641-357-0).

Turn the Tide does more than simply beg for God to work a revival in our land. It’s a call to take the revival that He’s already given us so we can transform our society for the better.

“When revival does come, how can we move from outpouring in the church to awakening in society?” Brown writes. “Put another way, how do we move from revival to reformation?”

Brown answers these critical questions for how believers can actively take the experiences they’ve had with the Holy Spirit and use them to revive multiple areas of society.

“My greatest concern is not so much the presence of darkness in America as it is the absence of light,” Brown writes. “This book, then, focuses on the light—meaning on us—helping us realize how we can see genuine, lasting social transformation by implementing the principles laid out for us in Scripture,”

By examining historical accounts of revival and delving in deep into the Word of God, Brown gives readers the practical wisdom needed to engage with society and step out in faith to share the gospel with the world.

“How we respond today will go a long way in determining the future of our nation—our whether our nation even continues to exist as the United States of America.”

Turn The Tide is more than a book; it is a clarion call to action. Dr. Brown’s profound insights and practical guidance are poised to ignite a movement of cultural awakening and societal transformation that will impact generations to come.

“Revival alone will not get the job done. Revival alone will not turn the tide. It must be a revival in the church that leads to a reformation in society, an outpouring that leads to awakening.”

Turn the Tide, published by Charisma House, releases on May 7, 2024, and is available wherever books are sold.

Michael L. Brown, PhD, is the founder and president of AskDrBrown Ministries and the president of FIRE School of Ministry.
