TOP SHELF BOOK COVER AWARD PROGRAM TO CELEBRATE 10 YEARS AT ECPA PUBU

October 21, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

  • Record number of entries to result in record number of winners >> announced at ECPA PubU next month

  • Record number of judges — 28 industry art directors — evaluated the entries in four debut categories

Design professionals in Christian Publishing invited to gather at PubU on Nov. 16-17 in Nashville for two days of sessions and the 10th anniversary celebration of the year’s best book and Bible designs.

https://ecpapubu.org/TEMPE, ARIZ., OCTOBER 24, 2022 – Design professionals and art directors across the Christian publishing industry are invited to attend ECPA PubU for DESIGN FORWARD, a special program that celebrates the impact of their work, and gathers them for six design track sessions on key topics in design.

ECPA PubU will be held on November 16-17 at Lipscomb University in Nashville.
Registration is still open at ECPAPubU.org.

https://topshelfaward.org/At the PubU opening session, a record number of Top Shelf Design Awards will be presented in four categories:  Non-Fiction, Fiction, Children’s, and Bibles.  In this 10th anniversary year, the program expanded to four categories and a 28-member cadre of judges from the industry – as each submitting publisher nominated a design professional to the judging pool.  This resulted in a record number of entries, in which a record number of winning designs will be announced on November 16.

“In the last nine years, 171 book and Bible designs have won this prestigious award, reflecting the amazing work of so many teams in our industry,” stated ECPA president Jeff Crosby.

“Each year, this program showcases the incredible scope and concentration of design talent in Christian publishing – all dedicated to adding the highest form of beauty, to the truth and goodness our publishers produce.  We look forward to adding more designers and designs to the award’s compendium.”

Included with the award presentations, will be a special celebration of the program’s 10th anniversary – with the sharing of a fun video featuring contributions from designers, publishers, and judges, reflecting on 10 years of design excellence in Christian publishing.

“At first blush, Top Shelf is about celebrating book cover design. But every department speaks into the creative process in some way,” expresses Torrey Sharp, owner and principal of Faceout Studio and consultant for the program.

“Great design flows from great writing and sound strategy. Producing and delivering beautiful and meaningful books is a team sport. Top Shelf acknowledges well-crafted books that seek to make a difference out there. We all play an important role in this effort and get to celebrate together!”

Sharp was also involved in developing the design track offered at PubU called DESIGN FORWARD, gathering design professionals around six sessions offered the afternoon of November 16 and the morning of November 17 at Lipscomb University:

  • Books as Brands with Matt Lehman (Matt Lehman Studios)
  • Design Huddle on Big Topics with Kristen Andrews (Hachette) and Torrey Sharp (Faceout Studio)
  • Perfectly Pitched with Ashley Spear (5by5) and Victor Huckabee (5by5)
  • What Makes Type Driven Designs Effective with Chandler Saunders (Passion City Church and Passion Publishing)
  • Practical Creativity & Other Oxymorons with Tim Green (Faceout Studio)
  • Right Mind At Work: Finding Common Ground Across Generational Gaps with Jose & Nikolle Reyes (Metaleap)

In particular the session, Right Mind at Work: Finding Common Ground Across Generational Gaps, has huge implications across all disciplines in publishing, addressing how we can best work together across generations — millennials alongside Gen X, Boomers, or later.

Sharp continues: “I can’t wait to catch up with clients, friends and peers at this year’s PubU. Especially after the isolation of these past couple of years due to the pandemic, I’m excited to reconnect in person, hear new ideas, challenge old perspectives, and peer into the future about where our industry is moving.  I invite all my design colleagues in the industry to join me.”

Registration for ECPA PubU is still open at ECPAPubU.org.  Also available on the event site are group rates at Nashville area hotels, a full program schedule, speakers, session info for training tracks in design, marketing, editorial, and production & operations, plus a Children’s Book Summit available to all attendees the afternoon of November 17.  Those with interest and roles in Christian fiction are invited to stay for The Christy Award Gala that evening, preceded by the Art of Writing sessions — all listed on the website and accessible via PubU registration.

New Growth Press releases Advent devotional/curriculum by Marty Machowski

October 17, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Marty Machowki’s The Light Before Christmas provides families with a devotional and churches with a curriculum for the holiday season

The Light Before Christmas: A Family Advent Devotional (New Growth Press/October 10, 2022) is a new four-week devotional by Marty Machowski, best-selling author of the popular Prepare Him Room Advent devotional and curriculum, and many other family favorites. The Light Before Christmas combines devotions on the theme of light and darkness with the story of eleven-year-old Mia and her grandmother as they prepare for Christmas.

Every year, Mia loves to spend the month of December with Grandma getting ready for Christmas. Grandma loves to share her faith, especially at Christmas time, and although she is blind, she can see the light of Jesus shining bright and helps Mia—and children of all ages—to do the same. This year, they read a special devotional, The Light Before Christmas, together.

Machowski brings families into their devotional time, sharing the story of Christmas. Through a Bible study of light and darkness, readers will discover how the theme of light weaves its way through the Christmas story and God’s plan of salvation.

“Light is the most amazing element of God’s creation and people have long celebrated its beauty at Christmas time. Christmas lights decorate our windows and doorways, our houses, and trees. Though many have lost the meaning behind the light, they marvel at the twinkle of Christmas lights as they shine forth in the darkness in beautiful arrays of color. Children celebrate when they see a well-lit Christmas decoration and the lights of Christmas on a dark night cheer up the weariest soul,” Machowski writes. “Once you know the story of light and its place in the Christmas story, the lights that decorate homes at Christmas will bring a deeper joy to you.”

The Light Before Christmas contains thirteen devotionals—three for each of the four weeks of Advent and one more for Christmas. Each devotional includes a Scripture for the day, an object lesson, a question to discuss as a family, a song to sing together, and a prayer.

For churches looking for a fresh take on their children’s curriculum this year, Machowski has also written The Light Before Christmas: An Advent Sunday School Curriculum. The four-weeks of lessons guide children in learning about the reason we celebrate Christmas. Using the same theme as the family devotional, each lesson points to Christ, the Light of the World who came to save us from the darkness of sin.

“From before the dawn of creation through the eternal light of God’s glorious throne, God’s light has always shone bright. Long before the twinkle of a star directed the wise men to Jesus, God planned to send his only son to rescue God’s children from the darkness of sin and bring them all into the glorious light of his presence,” Machowski points out.

This two-level (preschool and elementary) digital curriculum consists of lessons that include Scripture readings, dramas, object lessons, discussion questions, activity pages, crafts, and songs. Lessons include:

  • Week 1: A Great Light in a Land of Deep Darkness (Isaiah 9:2–7)
  • Week 2: Jesus the Light of Men (John 1:1–18)
  • Week 3: Glory to God in the Highest (Luke 2:1-20)
  • Week 4: A Light to the Gentiles (Luke 2:21–35)

Designed for families to be able to study in church and at home together, the devotional and curriculum can be used independently. Together, the devotional and curriculum will help families see the light of Jesus shining bright not only in the Advent season, but all year long.

Bob Lepine, longtime cohost of FamilyLife Today® and author of Build a Stronger Marriage, writes, “Almost every family I know is looking for fresh help in keeping the focus of Christmas where it belongs—on the birth of Jesus. That’s what makes The Light Before Christmas so special. Now parents and churches have a way to team up to recapture the wonder and excitement of the moment when heaven came to earth and Jesus was born.”

Pastor Rod Parsley shares message of hope and restoration in revolutionary new book with Charisma House

October 17, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Parsley Invites Readers to Experience Personal Renewal and National Revival in ‘Revival If…‘

Lake Mary, FL—America presently lies in the death grip of a devastating drought, albeit one of a very different type, says Best-Selling Author and Pastor, Rod Parsley. He writes that “ours is a ‘Dust Bowl’ of the spirit. Having fully embraced post- modern relativism, sexual-revolution hedonism, and a pantheon of false gods, our once-verdant culture has become a moral Atacama Desert. Barren. Powerless. Unable to sustain life. A desolate wasteland that at one time, not so very long ago, was history’s greatest garden of human flourishing.”

Is his latest book, Revival If…Igniting Your Passion for Personal Renewal and National Revival (Charisma House, ISBN-13: 978-1-63641-079-1), Parsley is shaking up all previous perceptions about what revival is and the possibilities of what it could look like in America and around the world. He takes an in-depth look at 2 Chronicles 7:14 to offer readers a scriptural blueprint to cultivating renewal in the heart and mind and a divine roadmap to revival on a national scale.

Drawing from over forty years’ experience with revival personally and in ministry, Parsley:

  • Clarifies what revival is and is not
  • Explains the difference between revival and awakening
  • Includes historical accounts and current perspectives on various revivals
  • Explores the four simple but essential requirements that when fulfilled will release the life-giving rain of revival upon a nation

“The ‘rain’ we so desperately need has a name—one that hits modern ears as hopelessly old-fashioned and outdated. It is revival,” writes Parsley. “And it has been far, far too long since we’ve seen this blessing poured out from heaven. Just as rain is the only cure for drought, revival is our only hope for the current famine of faith.”

Parsley goes on to describe the differences between what revival is and is not and how we will see it ignite the flames of clarity and a heart for the Lord on a national scale. Revival If… captures the whisperings of the Holy Spirit that are nudging believers towards a brand-new beginning marked by strength, wisdom, and power as the return of the Lord nears.

“Over the last several months God began to pose the burning question to my heart: Could it be that God is giving us one last opportunity to allow His Spirit to be poured out upon the earth before the return of Jesus Christ?” Parsley queried in his latest promotional video. This riveting and intriguing question sets the tone for Parsley’s book as readers dive into a greater understanding of revival and God’s heart behind it. Watch the full video clip here.

“He reminded me that what we must do now is to fan the flames of revival in our own hearts and lives as well as that of our nation,” Parsley says, and goes on to note that this reminder—this command of God—is to hold onto hope, persevering to the very end, seeking fullness of life and joy in the presence of the Holy Spirit here on earth and in the eternity to come.

“I believe America, I believe the world, are hungry for a passionate renewal and spiritual awakening,” Parsley notes. And in Revival If… he invites readers to experience that refreshing movement of God’s Spirit.

NavPress to release engaging new Bible Study series, stitching together faith through the Bible, a literary masterpiece

October 17, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Carol Stream, Ill. (October 13, 2022) NavPress will release the first two installments in the Storyline Bible Study series by Kat Armstrong in January 2023. The first two offerings in the series are titled Mountains and Valleys.

These studies guide readers through the storyline of Scripture—each following specific people, places, or things in the Bible. People may be practiced in dissecting a passage or verse and pulling things out of the text to apply to their lives, but this can sometimes cause it to feel like their faith is fragmented.

The Storyline Bible Studies will help readers put things back together in the broader context of the Bible. Through this series, readers will discover cohesive, thematic storylines with literary elements and appreciate the Bible as the literary masterpiece that it is.

Each study is five lessons long and can be paired with its thematic partner for a seamless ten-week study to fit in a church semester. Every study features

  • gospel presentation at the beginning of each Bible study;
  • full Scripture passages included in the study so that you can mark up the text and keep your notes in one place;
  • insights from diverse scholars, authors, and Bible teachers; and
  • free resources for preaching and leading small groups.

Mountains
In the ancient, symbol-driven world of the Bible, location didn’t just matter—it had meaning. The Mountains Bible study will guide you through five mountaintop Bible stories because mountains are holy ground for connecting with God.

Valleys
Valleys in the Bible have far more meaning than just as geographical markers or pins on an ancient map. In his literary genius, God repurposes valley settings throughout Scripture to signal tests of faith––and the deepening of confidence in the One who is with us in the valley.

Mountains | ISBN: 978-1-64158-580-4 | Softcover: $16.99 | January 17, 2023
Valleys | ISBN: 978-1-64158-584-2 | Softcover: $16.99 | January 17, 2023

Lexham Press’ second FatCat title in children’s series wins Moonbeam Award

October 17, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Bellingham, WA—FatCat, the friendly feline, has grown in stature as The Lord’s Prayer: For All God’s Children has won the 2022 Gold Moonbeam Children’s Book Award in the religion category. The Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and are dedicated to supporting childhood literacy and lifelong reading.

The Lord’s Prayer: For All God’s Children is the second book in the FatCat children’s series from Lexham Press and was published on October 5, 2022, along with The King of Christmas: All God’s Children Search for Jesus.

Illustrator of the FatCat series, Natasha Kennedy, said, “I’m really humbled to win a gold Moonbeam award. As with all the FatCat books, illustrating The Lord’s Prayer was a labor of love. And it’s rewarding to see all these hours of intentionality being recognized and celebrated by others—especially those who evaluate many children’s books!”

“Children learn to speak by repeating what they hear,” said Harold L. Senkbeil, author of the text that accompanies each petition of the prayer. “My privilege was to unpack the words of Jesus simply and clearly so kids can speak to their Father in heaven just like Jesus does: boldly and confidently.” Senkbeil is a pastor of over five decades, and author of the multi-award-winning book The Care of Souls: Cultivating a Pastor’s Heart.

Todd Hains, children’s book editor said, “These books are more than a dear plump, gray cat—that’s what this award recognizes. Natasha’s illustrations open children’s imagination, so they can enter the world of God’s word. The authors’ words teach the meaning of God’s word in a simple way. The FatCat series helps parents give their children God’s word. And God’s word never returns empty! Parents may not see it right away, but they’re planting the seeds of God’s word in their children’s heart.”

The FatCat series includes The Apostles’ Creed: For All God’s Children, The Lord’s Prayer: For All  God’s Children, The King of Christmas: All God’s Children Search for Jesus, and accompanying coloring books for The Apostles’ Creed and The Lord’s Prayer. The King of Easter: Jesus Searches for All God’s Children publishes in January, 2023, and future volumes are planned, including The Ten Commandments: For All God’s Children.

Christian publishing professionals to gather for training in Ghana

October 10, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

(Colorado Springs, CO)—Magazine Training International (MTI) invites Christian magazine publishing professionals in Africa to attend the third event in a 10-year training program for Africa. The conference will be held 13-18 November, 2022, in Accra, Ghana.

The five-day Introduction to Magazine Publishing Course will cover editing, design, and management. Participants will gain the tools needed to successfully launch a magazine or update their current process for more effective and influential publication. Participants in the course will receive the 240-page Introduction to Magazine Publishing textbook.

The course will be followed by a one-day, limited-enrollment Hands-on Workshop designed to give practical help to participants as they make plans to start a new magazine or restart an existing one. All participants must have taken part in the Introduction to Magazine Publishing Course preceding the workshop.

Some of the topics to be covered in the course include the sound business principles needed to establish a magazine on a solid foundation, how to craft articles that touch the hearts and lives of readers, and mastery of design principles to create an attractive magazine that draws and engages readers.

MTI conferences are known for practical training and a genuine approach from the expert trainers.

“I came in to pursue excellence in my publication and what I left with was a map—a road map in which I can attain this excellence,” said Jim Olang with Afroscope magazine, an attendee of MTI’s conference in Kenya. “The trainers were relevant, credible, and what I loved most—they contextualized their examples. This resonated with me. It was definitely worth the time and resources.”

This year’s international team of trainers includes James Njoroge, art director of Timazi; Esther Nyaga, publishing manager of Publishing Institute of Africa; Jeremy Weber, director of CT Global at Christianity Today, David Renard, a partner with mediaIDEAS; Francis Ayieko, founder and publisher of The Shepherd; and Lea Greene, publication content manager and designer for SAconnects.

Training events will be presented in English, but because Ghana is surrounded by French-speaking countries, simultaneous interpretation in French will be available. The textbook is also available in French.

MTI’s prior conferences in Africa were held in Kenya in 2018 and Côte d’Ivoire in 2019. MTI provides professional development opportunities in-person and online to Christians in publishing around the world.

The mission of Magazine Training International is to encourage, strengthen, and provide resources to Christian magazines as they seek to build the church and reach their societies for Christ. Over the last 33 years, MTI offered 70 conferences, courses, and seminars in East/Central Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. In addition to on-site courses and conferences, MTI provides online courses and workshops, free e-books, training videos, course manuals in a dozen languages, and other print digital, audio, and audio-visual materials in a resource-packed library on MTI’s website. More information is available on our website and Facebook.

“Rose Among Thornes” wins 2022 Word Awards in multiple categories

October 10, 2022 by Sheri Toomb

Iron Stream Media is thrilled to announce that Rose Among Thornes by Terrie Todd has won the prestigious Debra Fieguth Social Justice Award from The Word Guild for 2022 as well as the award for Best Book Cover! The Word Awards were established to recognize excellence and raise the profile of Canadian Christian writers. The awards ceremony was broadcast online Saturday, September 17, 2022.

Recognition for Rose Among Thornes includes:

  • Winner: Best Book Cover Award
  • Winner: Debra Feiguth Social Justice Award
  • Finalist: Christian Fiction – Historical

About the Book

Forgiveness is the deadliest force on earth.

War might be raging overseas, but Rose Onishi is on track to fulfill her lifelong goal of becoming a concert pianist. When forced by her government to leave her beloved home in Vancouver and move to the Canadian prairie to work on the Thornes’ sugar beet farm, her dream fades to match the black dirt staining her callused hands. Though the Thorne family is kind, life is unbearably lonely. In hopes that it might win her the chance to play their piano, Rose agrees to write letters to their soldier son.

When Rusty Thorne joins the Canadian Army, he never imagines becoming a Japanese prisoner of war. Inside the camp, the faith his parents instilled is tested like never before. Though he begs God to help him not hate his brutal captors, Rusty can no longer even hear the Japanese language without revulsion. Only his rare letters from home sustain him—especially the brilliant notes from his mother’s charming helper, which the girl signs simply as “Rose.”

Will Rusty survive the war only to encounter the Japanese on his own doorstep? Can Rose overcome betrayal and open her heart? Or will the truth destroy the fragile bond their letters created?

Iron Stream Media derives its name from Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” This sharpening describes the process of discipleship, one to another. Iron Stream Media is the home of Iron Stream, Iron Stream Fiction, Iron Stream Harambee Press, Iron Stream Kids, and Brookstone Publishing Group.
