COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 1, 2025—Campbell Wharton, SVP & Publisher, PRH Christian, announced Laura Barker will step down from her position as VP & Publisher effective April 15, 2025.

During her 22 years with the company, Barker has made an indelible mark on PRH’s Christian publishing program and the industry. Originally joining WaterBrook in 1998 as Managing Editor and eventually becoming Editorial Director, she stepped away in 2004, working as a consultant with WaterBrook and other publishers. Returning in 2009 to a combined WaterBrook & Multnomah as Editorial Director, Barker then rose to become Editor in Chief and eventually to Publisher, where she has been at the helm for the last five years. Over the course of her notable career, Barker has acquired and edited numerous award-winners and bestsellers, such as multiple books by Jennie Allen, including the million copy New York Times bestseller, Get Out of Your Head and Latasha Morrison’s ECPA Book of the Year, Be The Bridge. She has worked directly with a stellar list of authors that includes Liz Curtis Higgs, Katie Davis Majors, Anne Graham Lotz, Joanna Weaver, Randy Alcorn, Kay Arthur and numerous others. Barker also spearheaded the incredible growth of the Christian children’s program and was integral in launching the Ink & Willow creative gift product line.

Barker shared with the PRHCPG staff that she sensed it was time for her to move in a new direction. “Everything seems to confirm this as the best time to make way for fresh vision and leadership in this particular season, so rich with possibility in our new organizational structure as PRH Christian,” Barker said. “Under the continued leadership of Campbell Wharton, and given the solid foundation we’ve built together, I have every confidence that the future holds great opportunity for our program to thrive.”

“Laura set the bar extremely high as an editor and publisher, bringing heart and soul to every author she collaborated with and is universally admired and adored by her colleagues, authors and agents,” said Wharton. “She is known throughout the industry for not only her editorial acumen but also for her passionate advocacy of our authors and their messages during every step of the publishing process and for her insight and wisdom that helped shape our Christian division into a top destination for Christian publishing.”

Wharton added, “I want to thank Laura for her calm and steady leadership over the past several years, building and mentoring a terrific editorial team and for the foundation she has laid for our division’s next phase. Personally, I am deeply appreciative of her guidance and friendship over the many years we’ve worked together. Her warmth, laughter and good nature will be missed. We offer her our heartfelt gratitude and best wishes for her future.”

Newly hired Editorial Director Madison Trammel, who is already playing a key role in PRH Christian’s growth plan, will now report to Wharton. All non-fiction and fiction adult editors for WaterBrook, Multnomah, Image and Forum continue to report to Trammel. Now reporting to Wharton is Executive Editor, Sarah Rubio, who will continue to lead  PRH Christian’s Children’s program;  Susan Tjaden, VP, Executive Editor, for the Ink & Willow gift line (and will remain reporting to Trammel on the adult program); as well as Bridget Baxter, Manager, Publishing Operations.

IVP’s ‘The Wood Between the Worlds’ and ‘How Not to Waste a Crisis’ named Finalists for 2025 Christian Book Award® program

April 7, 2025 by Sheri Toomb

April 2025 | LISLE, IL—The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) has announced that two InterVarsity Press (IVP) titles—The Wood Between the Worlds and How Not to Waste a Crisis—are among the finalists for the 2025 Christian Book Award® program.

The Wood Between the Worlds: A Poetic Theology of the Cross is a finalist in the Christian Living category of the Christian Book Award® program. Brian Zahnd, founder and lead pastor of Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, Missouri, offers compelling theopoetics and references to music, art, literature, and culture to bring new perspectives to our understanding of the cross.

Jonathan Merritt, author and contributing writer for The Atlantic, said, “Most books on the cross of Christ are regurgitations of outmoded atonement theories that say almost nothing memorable. But Brian Zahnd has once again broken the mold with his revolutionary book The Wood Between the Worlds. Herein we have a capacious portrait of Jesus’ sacrifice that is so stunningly beautiful and uniquely framed that the reader cannot look away. An enrapturing volume to reignite the church’s curiosity around the crucifixion penned by one of today’s most provocative pastors.”

The other Christian Book Award® finalist, chosen for the Ministry Resources category, is How Not to Waste a Crisis: Quit Trying Harder by Tod Bolsinger, author of the bestselling Canoeing the Mountains.

Unlike a typical leadership book, How Not to Waste a Crisis is an invitation to rethink and redefine your approach to leadership in times of upheaval. Bolsinger’s book is one of four in the Practicing Change Series. The other titles in the series include The Mission Always Wins: Quit Appeasing Stakeholders, Leading Through Resistance: Quit Pushing Back, and Invest in Transformation: Quit Relying on Trust.

Richard Stearns, president emeritus of World Vision US and author of Lead Like It Matters to God, said, “Here’s a scary truth: regardless of where you work or what you do for a living, a crisis is coming. In fact multiple crises lie ahead for you because our world is now changing at an unprecedented rate, and those changes will render you and your organization obsolete if you can’t find a way to continuously adapt to these coming crises. Leading through these changes will require leaders who aren’t afraid to slay some sacred cows, challenge conventional wisdom, and even live outside their own leadership comfort zones. Adaptation will be the single most critical survival skill of the twenty-first century. Tod Bolsinger’s four short books in the Practicing Change Series are the ‘emergency preparedness drill’ that you will be grateful to have read when the next ‘tsunami’ hits your organization.”

The winners in each category, along with the 2025 Christian Book of the Year®, will be presented at the at the ECPA Awards Celebration in Nashville on April 29th.

  • Ghosted: An American Story by Nancy French in the Biography and Memoir category
  • The Scandal of the Kingdom: How the Parables of Jesus Revolutionize Life with God by Dallas Willard in the Christian Living category

“We could not be more pleased to see these two powerful books receive this recognition from the ECPA,” said Webster Younce, Zondervan Books’ Vice President and Executive Editor. “Each book, in a distinct and indelible way, explores the counter-cultural path that followers of Jesus are called to take. Released to critical acclaim, Publishers Weekly noted the book “balances her frank, up-close political analysis with an uplifting message about the faith that sustained her.”

Langham Publishing marks 500-book milestone: A journey of publishing for and from the global Church

April 7, 2025 by Sheri Toomb

April 2025 — Langham Publishing has reached a significant milestone: the publication of its 500th title. At the turn of this 500th publication we reflect on something deeper — a long and purposeful journey to serve the global church with biblically faithful, contextually relevant books representing our church around the world.

Langham Publishing began with a vision — carried forward by John Stott and nurtured through decades of prayer and partnership — to equip leaders in the Majority World with the resources needed to teach, preach, and understand the Bible in their own contexts.

“Langham Publishing was born without any fanfare,” says Pieter Kwant, former Director of Langham Literature. “Working on the Africa Bible Commentary had convinced me that the future for Langham Literature lay in amplifying the voices of Majority World leaders, rather than just distributing western written materials. I also realised that this was going to be a generational change, as we all needed reeducation.

“With the start of Langham Publishing brought a challenge to the paradigm of the West to the Rest, and instead presented locally contextual writing that touched the hearts and answered the questions asked within the great variety of cultures.

God answered our prayers and it is remarkable to me how Langham Publishing has grown in number of Majority World authored titles and in distribution coverage, with an emerging paradigm of the Rest to the Rest. Soli Deo Gloria.

Over time, a few monographs grew into a publishing house with four key imprints:  Langham Academic, Langham Global Library, HippoBooks/LivresHippo, and Langham Preaching Resources. With books published in English and French (and more translated through local partnerships), Langham Publishing is active in theological communities across Africa and Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. There, seminaries are growing, preachers are thirsting for solid resources and church leaders are navigating fast-changing social and cultural landscapes.

“Langham Publishing has had a visible impact on African theological education and scholarship,” says Elizabeth Mburu, the Literature Coordinator for Anglophone Africa at Langham. “For too long, African institutions did not have access to resources published by African scholars. Most of the resources were from the Global North and this meant that students and faculty were limited in their ability to theologize contextually in the classroom.

“The increasing resources from authors from the Global South, and from Africa in particular, means that both students and faculty can empower the church positively and address the specific needs that impact the continent of Africa, as well as Africans in diaspora. Langham Publishing is also empowering scholars to conceptualize and write from within their contexts without compromising biblical truth.

As one of my roles as a commissioning editor, and a Langham author myself, I see first-hand how Langham-produced resources are changing the face of theological education. There is now the sense that the church is both local and global and that unity in diversity is indeed possible.”

Luke Lewis, Director of Publishing, addresses the ongoing challenges and goals:  “These first fifteen years have been an amazing journey. I am so grateful to our faithful supporters and readers, all of the staff past and present, as well as all of the amazing relationships developed with our authors, editors and translators. There are still major hurdles for scholars in the Majority World when it comes to publishing both locally and globally, especially in countries or regions where academic publishing is limited. There are also still major challenges for readers in the Majority World when it comes to access. As we move forward with our next 500 publications we will continue to partner and work for the local church, local institutions and local publishing initiatives to break down these barriers.”

Langham Publishing’s hope is to continue to support the needs of the global church offering a platform for local voices while also contributing to broader theological conversations. Hani Hanna, Director of Langham Literature, expresses hopes and vision for the future:  “Reaching 500 published books is a remarkable milestone for Langham Publishing. Its unique contribution to the global church lies in its commitment to serving theological education and church leaders and to amplifying important theological voices that are often marginalized. This dedication to contextualized theology enriches our understanding of Scripture and fosters global conversations.

“We praise the Lord for enabling us to come thus far. A heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated Publishing team who are genuinely caught up in Langham’s vision. Many thanks are due to our invaluable partners who have contributed to this incredible journey.

As we celebrate this achievement, our hope is that Langham Publishing continues to press on, fulfilling its calling to equip the global church with resources that deepen understanding and promote unity. May the next chapter bring even greater impact to increasingly polarized communities and a wider reach in increasingly digitally-driven societies, ensuring a rich tapestry of global Christian voices.”

ABOUT LANGHAM PUBLISHING
Langham Publishing is a ministry of Langham Partnership whose vision is to strengthen the global church. Through Langham Publishing, we publish books for Christian leaders, preachers, and scholars that represent a diverse church around the world, furthering our understanding of scripture, our mission as God’s people, and our love in Christ.
